This is something that's puzzling me. Is Valten a Warrior Priest, in that he's a warrior obviously empowered by/chosen by/possibly IS Sigmar? Or as a possible avatar of Sigmar, is he something else entirely?

Is Valten a Warrior Priest, in that he's a warrior obviously empowered by/chosen by/possibly IS Sigmar?I don't think he's a warrior priest because he is those things - not a follower of Sigmar. He's the warrior of Sigmar, but lacks the priest aspect. He doesn't bless others and he doesn't give rousing speeches - he just fights (although, that alone is inspiring when he does it).
Granted, I'm no expert on this sort of thing, and all my information is from Games Workshop's site (http://uk.games-workshop.com/empire/characters/1/) and Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valten), so I could be missing some big stuff. But I didn't see any references to Valten actually worshiping Sigmar or anything.
And if all else fails, check his head. Hair? Not a Warrior Priest! ;)

I don't think it would be too far fetched to describe Valten as a Chosen of Sigmar. Basically the Sigmarite equivalent of a Chaos Warrior.

There's quite a few chaos warriors who have slain a mountain of their fellow chaos warriors ;) After all, that's what most of them seem to spend their time doing: killing eachother.

Aye except you can't compare Valten to a standard chaos warrior you'd have to compare him to a chaos lord at least and they most certainly do kill a few hundred other chaos warriors.

It really depends on who you talk to...but Luthor Huss and the majority of the Empire(particularly the lower classes) believed Valten was Sigmar reborn; an incarnation of Him that came to the Empire in its time of need. Naming him an 'avatar' of Sigmar probably isn't too far off.
However, like everything else in Warhammer, it's not entirely clear if Huss's belief is true...and with Valten missing (possibly dead) we might never know what he truly was.

Simple answer is no, Valten is not a Warrior Priest. Warrior Priest's go through trials (tests, not one's with juries and a judge) and are appointed by the Grand Theogenist or whoever the highest ranking priest is in the area.
Valten is supposedly the reincarnation of Sigmar. Huss believes it, and there is quite a bit of evidence pointing to that being fact. I don't think he is the reincarnation, because Sigmar would have walloped Archaon, and Valten could not defeat him.
It's quite possible that Valten is dead, or will come back as something evil. He was found in bed with a dagger dripping venom sticking out of his gut, then he disappeared. This leads us to believe that
1.) The Skaven killed him
2.) The Skaven took him to do some sort of crazy experiment on
3.) He pulled a divine ascension on us and his entire body went to the Halls of Sigmar.
I think it would be great if Valten came back like the Grand Theogenist did, except Valten is all evil.

Valton's the reincarnation of Sigmar. During the storm of chaos, luther huss witnessed him fight off an entire horde of beastmen with his father's blacksmithy hammers. That, and he had a birthmark shapped like a certain two-tailed comet. He took Valton in and gave him Sigmar's hammer, and he fought at the great seige of middenheim. Sadly, after the victory of the Empire at the seige, a Skaven assasin somehow snuck in and killed Volton in his sleep. It'd be awsome if he was all evil. Like anakin skywalker lol. And he possesses a giant chaotic warhammer and rides a great daemonic steed! :O

Not quite following on what you are saying, my friend. Care to elaborate a bit?

Like Sigmar Valten was a Warrior, not a Warrior Priest, like Sigmar he could not use magics.
So a Warrior Priest, no, and neither was Sigmar.

Valten was nowhere near as powerful as Sigmar was, it's even stated.
For many in the Empire, Valten represents the one ray of light in a time of great darkness. If Valten is indeed Sigmar reborn, then surely no force can stand against him. If, however, Luthor is the delusional madman that many believe him to be, then Valten may be nothing more than a strong young warrior – and the Empire may well be doomed.
Sigmar wounded Abraxas heavily (he couldent kill it since it was immortal)
He slayed Nagash, one of the greatest warlocks to exist in Lustria, ever.
Sigmar defeated Moknar the Everchosen, and walked away unharmed.
And though I cannot find the source for this for the moment, Sigmar ,without his hammer–unarmed, keep in mind that he is bare cheasted, no armor or anything like that.
He beat up a Greater Daemon of Khorne so badly it fleed in fear through a portal which Sigmar followed him into, and that is supose to be the last time he's seen.

Valten is a yound warrior who joins empire after his village was attacked by beastmen.
people assume he is sigmar reincanate because of the likeness of them both and the twin comet bithmark.
he is a tough cookie can mingle with archaon and hold his own (archaon is still more useful in the game)
sigmar was far stronger.....also a suggestion has been made that a long time ago before they seperated 40k and fantasy the idea was that sigmar was to be a spame marine primarch who landed through the eye of terror to this world.....he was meant to be one of the lost chapters...
