How are talismans used?

Clearly this is a stupid question.

However, I can't figure out how to make use of talismans. I see that I have a number of items with empty talisman slots. But dragging talismans onto them doesn't appear to work. Right clicking the talismans doesn't seem to work. There must be something obvious, but neither I nor several RL friends have been able to work it out.

While I'm at it, what does the designation "8h" and similar mean on the talisman descriptions?

You've got to unequip the item you want the talisman on, then shift-rightclick it to open a window. Put the talisman in, press the button, and reequip it.

8h means that the talisman will last for 8 hours of gameplay. The only talismans without a timer are purple talismans.
