Butchering FAQ and Reagents List

Summary of Butchering from the 9/11/2008 patch notes:
Butchers can butcher the corpse of any non-sentient (unintelligent, animalistic in nature) monster.

When a player butchers a corpse, the loot that is obtained is dependent on the player's skill level. The higher the player skill, the better the loot. However, monsters will not give loot that is above their level.

When a player butchers/scavenges a corpse, the chance of a skill-up is dependent on the player's level versus the monster's level.

The skill-up chance becomes less the closer the player's skill is to 200.Q: I found a Giant Purple Flea. Why isn't it on the list?
A: WAR names its crafting items by "surname". All Fleas (http://www.wardb.com/search.aspx?search_text=flea#items:0+10-12+2) share the same property of being a Main Ingredient for Healing concoctions, while all Foolsberry (http://www.wardb.com/search.aspx?search_text=foolsberry#items:0+12+2) seeds will grow into plants that are Main Ingredients for Energy concoctions.
Q: Where do I find a Flea to make Apothecary skill 25 concoctions?
A: Because what you gain from Butchering is random, there's no way to Butcher a specific mob for a specific drop. If the items you're getting are too low, increase your Butchering level, or increase the level of the mob. If the items you're getting are too high, decrease the level of the mob.
Q: You say I need to kill a lower level mob to get my skill 25 fleas. Where do I find a lower level mob that still drops them?
A: The first thing you can do is to find a skill 25 flea (http://www.wardb.com/search.aspx?search_text=flea#items:0+10-12+2), and see what has dropped one for other players (http://www.wardb.com/item.aspx?id=83383#butchering-from:0+2+1). Again, you will always experience a different drop rate than what is reported, but you will be fairly close to the reported percentage if you are roughly the same level as the mob you are fighting.

The better way to do this is to find a species that drops fleas, and find an appropriate level mob of that species to farm (search for the species name in WARDB (http://www.wardb.com/), and utilize the 'Classification' column/information). Using the WARDB maps, you can also factor in the number of mobs in one area, and how condensed they are in choosing.

I didn't feel this warranted a post in the guides section yet, as it is quite incomplete. This is all of what I've butchered and then everything available on WARDB. Please help me to update the species with the results and their effects.

About the format: Quite likely, the Nutrients are a shared category: Guts/Gore/Blood/Lifeblood/Gall/Viscera, but as some appeared on some mobs and not others (notably Lifeblood - higher level? and Guts) I left it this way for now. I can sort the list out by effects as well for the Alchemists once it's mostly complete.

Also, Fleas and Ticks seem to be a shared drop from many species.
Tick - MI Healing
Flea - MI Energy

Bravo!

Excellent - I was just starting to do just the same thing this weekend. Now I will track this thread and add to it if I come across any unmentioned creatures or butchering drops from those creatures.

Thankyou very much for sharing.

Big Cats - MI Action Points, MI Healing
(Big Cats drop fleas and ticks, also drop some other stuff but I can't remember what)
Bats - MI Action Points

Found this stuff in Troll Country.

Also, I found this mutant deer tick in Ostland on a rank 2 deer. It requires apoth 160 and is a MI Healing.

Ribbon leeches are not unique to unicorns -- they also drop with scavenging off of humans.

Has anyone come across an intelligence reagent yet? I've been looking since I started butchering and I have yet to find one.

I just got Jumping Wood Ticks (MI Healing - Apoth 110) off of bats in the tower in Chaos Ch. 10.

This post would be a lot more useful if it listed the Apothecary skill level of the ingredients, too.

The idea is that different species drop different types of things. So, if I want shielding potions, I go kill daemons. Bats and wolves provide different types of heals. Squigs let me increase batch size.

You just have to find animals of an appropriate level for whatever level stuff you want.

I'll update the Cats and Bats entry. I'm leaving Unicorns as is, since you can't have both and the list is geared towards Butchers only, for them to look for specific properties with their tradeskill. I'll add a note in the key though to clarify.

I've made a few generalizations. I'm just going to say Fleas and Ticks are a shared drop from everything, as well as the Nutrients. I haven't seen anything that says either of those are really that unique to a certain specie(s). If they don't, it has something to do with having fur or not, but it just seems like a shared chance to get a flea/tick regardless of what you're butchering. Regarding the nutrients, they do have a number of names, some of which are unique to a species. All that changes though is the Cultivating levels required.

Basically, if you're Butchering, you'll get Fleas, Ticks, and Cultivating Nutrients as you go.
Has anyone come across an intelligence reagent yet? I've been looking since I started butchering and I have yet to find one.
Butchering doesn't have that effect. Effects are shared with Scavenging, and as a general rule, Butchering encompasses the "physical/melee" effects, and Scavenging the "caster/spell" effects.

Butchering seems to have Fiery/Explosive as its "special" effect, while Scavenging has Snaring as its "special".

To answer your question, Intelligence comes from Skaven Spit (Scavenging, Skaven) and by cultivating ______ Hat seeds.
I just got Jumping Wood Ticks (MI Healing - Apoth 110) off of bats in the tower in Chaos Ch. 10.
Another generalization:
[Anything] Tick = Healing
[Anything] Leech = Healing
[Anything] Flea = Energy

Precisely.

I'm going to let someone else experiment with how to get certain Apothecary level ranges based on your Butchering skill and the mob's level. ;)

Looking on wardb.com for bears, I see that there are Forest Stalker bears in Avelorn, listed as lvl20-25.

Also according to that site, you can Butcher them for up to lvl125 main ingredients.

I created a spreadsheet (http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=poN0GazDf1Hh-ImKMwR0eUQ) to more easily see what one can hunt in order to Butcher or Scavenge the desired ingredients. I still need better differentiation between which creatures drop components for Fiery Breath potions as opposed to Fiery (DoT) potions, so I have them all in DoT for now.

It is editable, so feel free to make any corrections or additions as needed.

Found somethings called Euphoric barbs in Avelorn, weedlike tentacle things, they butcher for thorn mats, fiery explosion mats, and strangely, soil.

They might be the chaos tentacle in the OP.

What was posted 2 posts before me is correct. The Bears in Eataine have their loot table mixed up with the birds in the area. They will drop all bird drops (including trash greys). They are easy and a good source for resist MI's
