...you reach the peak of your power at a relatively short range...You are a capable melee fighter, and you can strike at extended range, but your best attacks – grenades, blunderbusses, artillery bombardment, and more – require a closer position. How can engineers do ranged DPS when they require their targets to be much closer to them than, lets say, a Magus or Fire Mage? Are they basically then, 'medium range DPS' and a squig herder or a possible elven ranger class be considered 'long range DPS'? And i always thought (im a ex-wow junkie), that blunderbusses were guns, and it's stated that they require a close position. Or are blunderbusses different from what I'm thinking of, lets say, a rifle?

Thanks :]

I imagine they'll make up for the requirement of having to be closer to combat by being a bit more durable than most other ranged DPS classes.

And i always though (im a ex-wow junkie), that blunderbusses were guns, and it's stated that they require a close position.
I'd imagine the "close" term is relative. Closer than a bow or a fireball perhaps, but not like they'll be at melee range or anything. And yes, blunderbusses are guns, but the technology isn't all that advanced, so they're not that accurate - thus requiring the shorter range.*

*I believe that's how it's handled in the table-top game, anyway. Someone with more experience could probably answer that for sure.

Think of it like a shotgun. Yeah, it's a ranged weapon, but it's prime for closer fights than your typical rifle.

Blunderbusses spew all sorts of nasty shrapnel at the enemy, from a rather large cone (making them easy to find ammunition for! Nails, tacks, whatever's at hand, and sharp!). Thus, it has a *very* short range, since this broad bell-like "muzzle" can't aim with any real accuracy. You might be thinking Arquebuses.

Blunderbusses were lethal in the hands of the TT Chaos Dwarves, phew. I loved my Chaos Dwarves.

"you reach the peak of your power at a relatively short range"

"Perhaps the best way to deal with an Engineer is to fight him from a far. If you can effectively out damage him at long range he will be at a serious disadvantage."

i would assume that you do have long range guns/skills, but that you do most damage at medium/short range.

It appears the Engineer is going to be a kind of Short range AE attack specialist. Whether its blowing people up with grenades or unloading a Blunderbuss (aka sawn off shotgun) into someones face. If you get close to an Engineer be prepared to cop a large wallop where it hurts. :D
