View Full Version : Warrior Priest Name-a-thon

I borrowed this from the dwarven forums, and i decided the Empire would actually have a harder time getting names, since they are more "human" and not everyone wants to have a germanic, nordic or frankish name or whatever.

After making use of that name-generator website, i couldnt decide what my WP would be called, so in curiosity i wanted to find out what other WP's might want to name theirs, especially since i favor the one name + place of origin combo beause the two name concept is quite foreign but im eager to try.

so what do you guys think you will call your WP's?

Leon.
A name of famous Byzantine emperors (the byzantine empire was strongly conected to christianity too and the religious similarities are many with Sigmar's religion of the Empire and his followers) and also meaning "lion" in my native language (greek). I think that is enough for me to name a character and depict with it my will to make a brave and dedicated defender of the Empire.

Thank alot Aeneas, those are definitely a pointer. I bet i can find a vast store-house of names in Greco-Roman Mythology. but like Fusko said some have to actually overcome the urge to name themselves "Ringtone". Infact that name has been bouncing around in my mind for a while.
Thanks alot.

Jaroslav Dvojka - i'm a fan of slavic languages and their names.

would this hold? lore wise? i am new to this game (trying to learn as much as i can before realease date of the warhammer lore). I figured since the humans are alluded to being Holy Roman Empire, and said empire extended into Bohemia and Moravia, moving the capitol of the empire to Prague for a time. King Charles was a savior for Prague. I only assumed slavic names for that part of the empire, might allow a certian "crossover?" If not, then may i ask why?

Woehstan Heiligstreik was my pallys name there and will be my WPs name.

I know, Dante sounds a little off for a Warrior Priest, but hey, I'm a bit off as it is. My character won't be the religious fanatic most will be, but instead a bit more logical and earthly-minded (possibly even considered by others of his order to be not quite as attuned to Sigmar as he should be), while still striving for the destruction of evil.

Also, like Cain, I just love the name.

Not really a good choice for a Warrior Priest. In the bible, Cain(e) was the first the first human to ever commit murder, and was damned by angels and became a vampire. Probably better suited to a Chaos.

If you want good Warrior Priest names, search up ancient knights in medieval times, or the names of Monks / Chaplains. For example ; Hugues de Payens was a french nobleman who formed the Knights Templar. If there were ever REAL warrior priests in this world, then they were them.

My in game name will be Bernhardt Tremalay (A slightly altered version of the name of one of the Grand Master Templars)

Okay, I may not be Mr. Christ McMoses, but I've really never heard that. It would be kind of funny if the concept of the vampire originated from the Bible.

That being said, no one in the Warhammer mythos knows who or what Cain is, so it is still an acceptable name IMO.

What part of scripture mentions Cain becoming a Vampire? The Bible mentions him being casted to the Land of Nod, which is more a mistranslation of Hebrew than anything else, and he's simply meant to wonder around until he dies. Gnostic texts (Though I think the Book of Enoch is more Apocrypha than anything else) say that he settles and even establishes a city known as Enoch. But, what part mentions Cain becoming a Vampire? I'm curious.

If by "Scripture" you mean "Vampire: The Masquerade" or "Victorian Culture" I'd understand what you're trying to propose. There might be the suggestion that the "Mark" placed upon Cain by God would be Vampirism, though that's never actually mentioned in anything dated around the origination of scripture, and it more an invention by White Wolf and Victorian Storytellers.

Regardless, nothing in the Bible mentions Cain being cursed to drink blood. Nothing in earlier translations at least.

Back to the subject, I think Cain works well for a Sigmar Follower. Gives a lot of depth to any RP you'd decide to participate in, if that's your style. Might be best without a last name though, in my opinion.

Yea...the Knights Templar were badass...but they are french knights, and like Thorval said, they are more inclined towards Brettonia, whereas the Empire are Germanic. Personally, I will be naming my WP after a Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, or a variaton of one. Teutonic Knights seem more in line with the Empire than those names of the Templars.

Some links you all may find helpful in deciding on names.

Germanic surnames with their English meanings. (http://german.about.com/library/blsurname01.htm)

Ecclesiastical Titles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Ecclesiastical_titles) - not so much for character names, but good for titles of various positions in a regiment, perhaps.

At the moment, I'm leaning toward Vaelin Traugott. The first name is a favorite name I've carried with me through many games. The surname I pulled from the list I linked above, and means "trust in God."

But I'm given to understand that isn't the case for a Warrior-Priest.

Preaching and propaganda are very much alike though, they both use "communication" (via words, gestures, postures, images) as a means of either persuading, or reinforcing (as in preaching to the choir) something the recipient already believes.
Also, what the nazis were trying to do was create an empire in the image of old empires, much like this game is trying to, although the latter only on the fictional level (we hope ).

Aelric
09-01-2007, 11:35 AM
No, what Heinrich Himmler was trying to do was create an Empire in the image of a romanticized Teutonic Empire which had never really existed. Hitler thought Himmler's fascination with ancient history was a silly foible at best and possibly a needless distraction from the work that needed doing (from his perspective) in the present.

The Empire of WAR appears based on a Holy Roman Empire that survived long enough for the Renaissance to begin... the Empire isn't "being created" in the game we're playing, it's been around a long time, its major customs and institutions are fairly established, and it's under attack from several sources, within and without.

As to the Warrior-Priest... mine, at any rate, isn't planning on preaching many sermons. Words are simply wind; actions are what will win the day. :empire:

Garathos
09-01-2007, 03:39 PM

the Empire isn't "being created" in the game we're playing, it's been around a long time

First of all the Empire is currently being created by the developers (a different empire than the one in the previous GW products, if nothing else then from it being a different way to play), and once it is released that job will fall upon the community*, just as our RL experience is continually being created by all of us.
I'm not gonna bother with what part was the distraction and what was the real reason for the German expansion, because I don't see us ever getting along on that point.
As for the appropriateness of my chosen name, though, I've not seen a better one yet, and will be proud to be the owner of the coolest name in WAR trophy. ;)

*part of it, rather. I'm guessing the developers will still be there to help. :)

Any word on the naming system yet?
First name/last name?
How many characters etc?

Count Izreal

Supposedly you have two names.

BTW I am changing my name from Brother Izreal to Brother Godwyn...just so you know where to find me when you want to confess to your sins, then die...

Apostolos

I believe you can have two names (first and last) but are not required to use a last name.

Therefore I plan (unless I am wrong) to be a one name wonder

Apostle
(aka Apostolos for my twink witch hunter probably)

I can see a a lot of people using Warhammer 40K Space Marines Chaplain names notably from DoW

Coenwulf
06-21-2008, 03:56 AM
I did some research into Germanic names, and I've come up with these:

Christoph Wulfgar (= Spear of the Wolf)
Roland (I know it's French, but I love the name) Coenwulf (= Fierce wolf)
Lukas Grimhelm (= Savage protector)

I'm leaning towards Roland Coenwulf or Christoph Coenwulf.

Considering there are sure to be some name-burglars in this thread I will only reveal the translated meaning (in english) of my WP's first and last name (they are in german).

"Divine Purifier" ouh ouh ouh ouh ouh ouh ouuuh... if anybody asks he took/was given the name once he became a WP, instead of his earlier vanilla "Heinrich Bauer" (or some such). You need a new name if you are to spread Sigmars holy, righeous, asskicking gospel...

Don't even think about it burglars!!! Don't do it!!!

Good thread. Shouldn't be pages back, so here it is!

Personally I was thinking of something along the lines of 'Lord Falfarron' but 'Gustor the Lightbearer' or 'Kristen the Devout' sounds good also.

Im going to name my WP Tim. Then when I get in game im going to search the lands high and low to concur the Rabbit of Caerbannog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit_of_Caerbannog) with my Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Hand_Grenade_of_Antioch). I will then live in Castle Anthrax and defend it from the Legendary Black Beast of Aaargh. If he does show I will taunt him with frases like "I fart in your general direction!" and "Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!"

Ok enough of old monty, but seriously does the name matter unless you plan on RPing.

I think so. The name gives your character a place in the universe. Not everyone will feel like calling their toon a serious name like some of the ones posted or put a lot of thought into it, but most people will I expect. Maybe not to the same degree a RPer would though.

Still, I'm expecting to see some names like 'Headshotzz' and 'Choppychopchop'. I don't particularly think these sort of names add anything to the feeling of WAR, but people can name their toons anything they like. If 'Choppychopchop' is a great player it doesn't matter, but going from experience, people with them kind of names aren't. :p

Ok I know I'm going to appear foolish, but I couldn't use spaces / choose a last name when I created my toon (obviously I'm a noob so I'll save you the bother of pointing that out ;))

Am I missing something?

I went to the same source and picked out 'Baldemar' as my guys name. Also have 'Lukeios' on reserve; but that's not germanic at all, not even close.. :D
