"And I saw, and behold, a pale horse, and its rider's name was death, and hell followed him."

One movie really stands out for me, it's a Clint Eastwood movie called "Pale Rider". If you are a Witch hunter fan, or a Warrior Priest fan (especially Luthor Huss) you must see this movie. It's obviously not Warhammer, but it really reminds me of the direction that WAR is taking with the Witch hunter and the Empire in general.

What other movies have you seen that reminds you of classes about the empire?

Last I checked, this line is from the Book of Revelations, not Eint Cleastwood movie.

Krull I think it just might be possible they took the saying and used it :p And it worried me if you actually did check at any point ! (=

I always liked Blood + flesh though it's old , the mercenary commander was cool.

Yow, it was.

But on the main topic I can not really think of a movie that reminds me of the Empire.

Aye It's definatly tough, the main issue being majority of medieval movies REMIND me of historical medieval times rather than the empire.

But I suppose there's a few - Did any of you see the Joan of arc series? I thought it was pretty good and the gothic armour though most likely unrealistic was fantastic.

King Arthurs Enemy commander reminded me of a Marauder warlord somewhat and was one of my favourite characters mainly because He actually fought , rather than do twist and twirls or karate moves.. though that's technically not medieval times.

Well, yeah, basically. It also goes for when you think of the Empire, you think of what inspired it, which is the Renaissance, Germany, and the Goths.

Also, Black*Orc, I demand you to stop this madness immediatly!

lol Eint Cleastwood? Is that the Nazi German version of him if they would have won the war?

Anyhow, it is a biblical quote, but that is a quote shown at the beginning of the movie, and it is what his character is based off in the movie.

The movie is really good, but if you like Witch hunters and Westerns, then this is like a perfect fit nearly. It really has some great metaphors, and I like how "The Preacher" in this movie isn't a pansy, he a tough, and honest defender that reminds me of the same reasons I love different Empire characters.

Aguirre, Wrath of God by Verner Herzog. German conquistadors in the middle of the jungle, it might as well be an Imperial expedition to Lustria.
The Crucible - the 1996 version. I can definitely imagine this happening in a small Nordlander village.

Oh right, that movie. That was a good movie. Always did like Eastwood's films.

And yes, I also like the idea of a warrior preacher, which reminds me of a story I may just write up some day.

Don't you mean the Empire vs Chaos mauraders? Orcs would be more like a band or armored and vastly outnumbering 500 pound gorillas with 900 pound generals.

Hmm, well, that's certainly relevant to movies that remind you of the Empire! And yes, there's many a valuable lesson to be learnt from Grimms' fairy tales! Why, they taught me to kill my stepmother before she could do me any mischief, and torture any dwarfs I happen across until they divulge the secret of spinning flax into gold. What's more, I now know never to go upon any manner of quest unless my two elder brothers have tried and failed before so that I may avoid their fatal mistakes with my virtuous innocence. But most importantly of all, I can impress the internet with my knowledge of folklore! Aren't I literate!

Arthur

When the small band of Romans fight the barbarians - then they join up with Genevieve - kind of like finding a High Elf archer.

Then I know it might be blasphemy - but take the Hobbits out of Lord of the Rings - you get High Elves, Humans, and Dwarves.....just seems Empire to me - never did like the Hobbits anyway.

The Exorcist- warrior priests get old as well. [Though I am bit uncomfortable saying it as it was supposedly based on an actual event after all].

Flesh and Blood- Rutger Haugher [Probably spelt that wrong].

Other than that, not many movies.

A good book though is "Eclipse of the Cresent Moon", about the Ottoman siege of Eger in Hungary.

The Last Valley http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065969/ is set during the thirty years war, which is roughly the time period in Germany that the Empire is themed around. Its a good movie, and has some dark scenes, such as a witch being burned in the town center.

Speaking of witches burning, there is a movie called the Conqueror Worm http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063285/ (The Witchfinder General outside of the US) starring Vincent Price. A very dark, and quite graphic account of English witch hunter Matthew Hopkins, and his reign of terror. Both movies are well worth watching for Empire inspiration.

The movie 'Merlin' reminded me of the empire.

Interesting comment...I would also say that the back story and then battle seens during the siege of Jerusalem in Kingdom of Heaven remind me of or make me visualize WAR a little bit.

The Templars are not necessarily the good guys, they abandon good sense and their comrades, the King dioes and his army of loyal knight leave the city to its own ends...and..the Muslims are not necessarily the bad guys either despite their willingness to destroy the city while trying to take it....

it all depended on perspective...

If people have not seen the bettle seens ...they must..they are rally well done and historically accurate intheir depiction of Medevial battles

The movie that really reminds me is if you have seen the new Sleepy Hallow by Tim Burton with Johnny Depp in it. It had a lot of German names and a feel to it that reminded me heavily of something in the Empire. The headless horseman was like some chaos daemon summoned by a sorceress (in this movie), that would kill those that she commanded. Ichabod was sent to investigate the matter and he seemed like he would have fit perfectly with the storyline of a man who had been trained in the new technology of Nuln. The matters of faith involving of course Christianity (witchhunters and Sigmar) against Paganism. Then there was the nature druid type religion of the daughter and Ichabod's mother reminded me of Ulric and Taal, or Wood Elves. The mother was put in the Iron Maiden by Ichabod's father which sounds like something only a Witchhunter from the Imperium could do. The movie doesn't really depict the wars in Warhammer, but more the life of the simple folk and the fears and problems that they are forced to overcome. The Wars in Warhammer I can't really imagine a movie made so far that really depicts them perfectly.

For me its
Sleepy Hollow
The Brothers Grimm, Watch the first ten minutes and you'll swear they're witch hunters
The Last Valley.
Flesh and Blood ( Thats the one where the mercinaries kidnap the nobles daughter and boink the hell out of her right?)
The 1992 version of Dracula
The Village, whould have liked it more if the monsters were real.
Van Helsing. Its corny but it does have an Empire feel.
Brotherhood of the Wolf, About as Empire as you get.
Young Frankenstien
Army of Darkness

I noticed someone said take the hobbits out of LotR and you kind of have the Empire. Well might as well leave the hobbits in because one of the Empire's provinces The Moot is populated by halflings.

I'd say take everything out but the Hobbits. There is little similarity between the humans of Middle Earth and the humans of the Old World, apart from the fact that they're human.

I am thinking about "Frankenstein" (The one with Branagh and De Niro). The society and style there, with white wigs and such everywhere, but with a contrast in gruff and unkempt faces, looks like what the Empire might evolve into, if it is given a hundred years or so. And the whole story isn't unlikely to take place in the Empire either.

I am impressed by this response. *tips hat* You get some kudos.

Anyway, I second many of the above suggestions, especially Brotherhood of the Wolf and the first half of The Village.

Also, Eaters of the Dead aka The 13th Warrior has some similar themes.

I have four suggestions.

1. The Duelists starring Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel. It actually is set in the Napoleonic wars but the gaudy uniforms, the use of muskets and swords, and the unnerving loyalty to an emperor is very empire.

2. Elizabeth starring Cate Blamchett. The priest sent from Rome to assassinate Elizabeth is truly a fear inspiring sight worthy of any dark clad witch hunter.

3. Cyrano de Bergerac with Gerard Depardieu. The fight scenes in this movie were wonderful. Cannon, musket, and sword very empire.

4. Dangerous Beauty starring Catherine McCormack. This movie takes place during the renaissance in Venice with the threat of plague and the inquisition.

truly wonderful movies with settings that at least had influence on Warhammer's Empire.

Arigato! m(_ _)m

Great topic and some fine picks were made already here! I would like to add one more thing - its both anime and manga "Berserk". It`s sooo close to the "feel" of the Empire that it`s almost screaming ;P. Early renassaince world, full of violence, despair... Heroes fighing against fate - represented by supernatural powers that are taking control over the "normal" world. All in all it`s great on its own, but when you like "empire feel" it so much better!

I'm getting kind of sick of how the pace of the story has slowed to a crawl (to make room for more fight scenes), but I completely agree with you on Berserk. In fact, it's so similar to Warhammer on so many levels that I'm kind of suspicious...

Specifically, four superpowerful evil gods, at least two of which VERY closely resemble Warhammer's Chaos gods (The Succubus = Slaanesh and the Huge Brain = Tzeentch). These evil gods grant their chosen servants supernatural powers, accompanied in almost every case by some form of sadistic insanity and weird mutations. The Church officially opposes the evil forces of chaotic power, but their ranks are saturated with corruption, and it's likely that their whole faith is built upon a foundation which, at its hidden core, is dependent on the chaotic forces of the four big evil gods.

Meanwhile the misunderstood good guys are magicians who rely on the strength of the elements and the natural world, rather than the supernatural forces beyond creation.

Of course, Berserk is what Warhammer would be if Karl Franz and most of the Elector Counts had already been taken over by Chaos and there were no bastions of hope left in the world at all.

I don't think it's that big a stretch. A lot of the themes of the world in Equilibrium are pulled from Brave New World (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brave_new_world) - Civilization facing destruction, heavy regulation of populace (birth, emotion, nutrition); they all seem right at home with Empire in my mind.
