I'm looking to start reading some Warhammer lore.

I've heard Heldenhammer is a fantastic start; I play a WarPriest in WAR, looking to get some great background info.

I titled this thread Liber Chaotica because it really catches my eye and all reviews i've heard about it have been glowing.

If i started with the Liber Chaotica, would I be lost?

Would i be best to read Heldenhammer then the Liber Chaotica? I'm interested in learning about my enemy as well as the Empire and its allies. The darker side of the Liber Chaotica sounds very interesting as well.

Thanks!

The Liber Chaotica has basic information as well as higher up theories of certain things like the Winds of Magic. If you go through it from start to end, you don't really know any former knowledge.

But oh, is the book awesome. Very. Extraordinarily awesome.

liber chaotica is a great book if you want to know about chaos. it is more of a fluff book though than a pure novel. it is well written but sometimes it is very hard to read due to type of print or whatever odd thing they did.

heldenhammer is the first in the story of Sigmar and i thought was a fantastic book but AFIAK there are 2 more books coming from that series. the time of legends set Heldenhammer, Nagash, Malekith are all suppose to be comprised of 3 books each. i haven't gotten around to reading nagash yet but is on my list but people have been saying the pacing of the book isn't that great.

I really would love to pick up Liber Chaotica, but last I check it was close to $800 on eBay or something.

Yeah, I lucked out and found a used copy (though in an almost untouched state) for about 60 euros.

is that the orginal or the reprint? i got the reprint for like $50 new but that was also when it came out last year or so. i didn't think it was a limited release but i could be wrong. did you check the black library website for it?

I'm pretty sure the original was a limited release; it's out of stock on the Black Library website. I think I saw the reprint on Amazon for what is still an exorbitantly high price, but I guess it's better than nothing. :)

30 bucks is a good deal even if it was a reprint. I have no idea why people buy books for 800 dollars when the exact same stuff is in the reprints, sure if you collect these things I can understand. They only have a high price because they are rare, not because they are better.

Have you looked lately? There's nothing there near that price (although several LCs)

there actually is a difference between the orginal liber and the newer one that was released. the reprint talked more of undivded and i think people said the talk of the space marines in the guys dreams was also a add on. its a pretty hefty hardcover book but over all pretty good. if its out of print on black library yeah seems you have to go through specialty places or e-bay. when i pick up my DE stuff and the new SM book on sat i'll ask my store manager about it.

After some extensive searching, I found the paperback form of the book at scifigenre.com for only $30. I ordered it just now and I'm really excited to receive my copy!

I would NOT suggest heldenhammer. It's more like a book for unbiased historian on the life of sigmar, a man. If you want to be a warrior priest, you need to feel the very biased faith in sigmar, the god, of the empire. Reading heldenhammer will not give you the experience you need to feel, nor understand the empire's faith in their god and their mentality. Heldenhammer will only do the opposite for what you want. An unbiased look into Sigmar's life is exactly what kills the power of a warrior priest, his faith.

Secondly, the book gives nothing about the culture, politics, lives of the current Empire. It's about the savage tribes that made up the empire in ancient time, that has little difference from the chaos tribes in the north. It's diversely different from the civilised empire now. It's best if you already know about the empire and understand and feel their mentality, lives, then reading heldenhammer for fun to have a truthful look into his life.

I got the Liber for free! My former employer gave it to me for the hard work I did :) Hardcover and all.
There's also the Witch Hunter's Handbook, in the Life of Sigmar small format, detailing procedural guidelines for finding and convicting witches and mutants, weaponry and such. Very nice little book to get the 'inside view' on how witch hunters think and act (or are supposed to).

Liber Chaotica is excellent, highly recommended. The author of the last 3 of them is quite vocal in the community (at least on the fansite www.warseer.com) so you can pick his brain about what was written.

To get the feel of a warrior priest though, the best book would be 'The Life of Sigmar' a small pocket format hardback bound in leather with faux block print pictures in it. It's supopsed to be an inuniverse book, the equivalent of the bible detailing the life and might of Sigmar.

It is much more fantastical than Heldenhammer because its written from the biased perspective of his followers. It's in all ways religious propaganda and works well in that regard.

As far as fun to read novels which will cover a lot of areas of the lore very briefly, the Gotrek and Felix series (lots of books) are fantastic. And if I was you, i'd read Heldenhammer, then Liber Chaotica. Many of the army books also have great background in the back of them, as does each edition's rulebook, ie: Warhammer Fantasy Battles Rulebook 7th Edition.

Other cool background books include "The Vile Ratmen" about Skaven, and the "Liber Mortis" about the undead, not sure how dated the latter is, though.

If you want a decent book to help introduce everything for you, check out World of Warhammer. It's cheap, and about the only downfall is that a bit of it is on the GW website, but if you're like me and like to have a book to reference, it's really handy.
