Your salvage level divided by 5 must always be ABOVE the level of the item you are converting.
Most professions just prevent you from using the item if you are below. Salvaging is different in that it allows you to salvage higher level items (to an extent) but includes an increasingly higher failure rate each time you do. As long as you are salvaging items below your salvage level you will be nearly 100% successful.
How do you calculate the level of the items you can salvage? Very simple. Divide your salvalging level by 5
So if you're 72 salvaging you can salvage 72/5 + 20 = 14.4 level items with almost 100% success.
This accounts for why you have higher failures off the bat and why you can achieve nearly 100% success when following this rule.
Blues, and purples and mystics seem to require higher levels. So perhaps you would need an extra 30 skill for each of these? I'm not sure about that.
It is also possible that you get a bonus to your salvage level (e.g. +20) to help you through earlier levels that may stay with you all game.
The following is just what I can recall, and may not be totally accurate: In my experience if you salvage items 1-3 levels above yours you get an 60% success, and +3-5 levels you get a 20-30% success, above that I do not think you can salvage.
Hope this helps.

Um, 72 is NOT less than 14.4. So, I don't really follow anything else you said.

Sorry that first part was unclear. I made it more clear now.
wtf is this +20 in there for? 72/5 = 14.4 72/5 + 20 equals 34.4...

The +20 is some arbitrary number thrown out as a base. It makes sense though, as that would likely be enough to cover you almost always being successful at salvaging an item with salvage level 1. Once your skill naturally progresses beyond level 1-5 items lets say, that base disappears. Essentially, it would be like an assist during the learning curve to help you not fail at the beginning.

You mean "above?"
Anyway failure isn't the end of the world, you at least get essence. It's harder to come by than fragments anyway, IMO.
However, I don't think you can gain skill on a failure. Which is a little frustrating.

Well I witnessed a rows of failures on items that were WAY below my salvaging skill. I'm talking about a row of 9 failures (including 2 blues) with 130+ skill on lvl 20-21 items.

I don't think this rule follows true for blue items though.
Also blue items seem to require higher salvage than the green equivalent as well

Your salvage level divided by 5 must always be BELOW the level of the item you are converting.
I think you mean above?
i.e. 100 salvaging
Your salvage level divided by 5 (20) must be ABOVE the level (1-20) of the item you are converting.
I kept rereading your first statement, then I just assumed what you meant, and the rest seemed to be correct.

I still dont get where this +20 comes from. In the equation, 72/5 + 20 = 14.4.
If you use +20 as a base, he's telling us you can salvage level 20 equipment right away? he might mean 20/5 or 4 as a base. Can you salvage level 1-4 equipment right away? I dont think so. You have to salvage those Sundered items at first but it doesnt take long before you can salvage green items.
Truely an ingenious troll.

never failed a salvage after skill 200 hth
Yep, that formula fails on non-green items.
Tried to salvage a blue (salvage skill = 74, blue item = 13).
Salvage failed. :P
