Druchii: Evil by any other name
The Warhammer world is one of great conflict between opposing factions, ideologies and philosophies. While few races of the Warhammer can be subjectively considered wholly 'good' or 'evil', there are indeed those that can be aptly categorized as such. Of all the races of the Warhammer world there are two that are most definitely Evil: The Skaven and the Dark Elves. While we will be seeing both of these races in the game at launch, only the Dark Elves will be the playable of the two.
Thus, given my recent coverage on the superiority of the High Elves, I thought it would be only just to also discuss in more detail their wicked counterparts. Previously I have written material trying to enlighten folk on the nature of the Dark Elves, however this time I wish to expand upon these previous works and go into more detail as to the means, nature and perhaps even the 'why' behind the Evil of the Druchii.
The inclusion of Evil Elves has been a longstanding tradition in many types of fantasy. Even the ancient and dark fairy tales and stories of the fey could be classified as such. Certain these so-called 'children tales' really may not have been entirely meant for children given their graphic and interesting (if disturbing) nature. The Warhammer world itself is a very dark, dangerous and frightening place. As the old saying goes "Here be Monsters", a truism that could certainly be applied to the Druchii.
The Dark Elves of Warhammer are an entire populace that has been touched by and corrupted by Evil. However unlike the Skaven, who admittedly do not have a choice in being evil as they are essentially creatures of Chaos, the Dark Elves do have a choice in the matter. They choose to be the way they are, knowing full well what all it entails (most of the time) and rather than balk or shy away from their dark nature, instead they have chosen to revel in it. Their entire societal structure is built around perpetrating an endless cycle of atrocities, both upon themselves and upon other races.
There are two main contributing external forces to the Evil that is in the hearts of the Dark Elves: The worship of Khaine and the worship of Slaanesh. Both of these forces, though mutually exclusive to one another, have shaped the very nature of the society, philosophy and the very essence of their race ever since the split with the High Elves during the first strokes of their civil war. The primary catalyst of this can be attributed properly to the influence of Slaanesh, primarily through the Cult of Slaanesh and its champion: A singular woman who is both the mother of (and reputed lover/consort) of their King, a Dark Elf named Morathi.
Though it is likely that the cult of pleasure existed in some form before her arrival in High Elf society, under her guiding hand the cult became a very powerful force, which still likely has remnants left among the High Elves. However the primary worship and focus of Dark Elf society is in the singular Elven Deity that have chosen to follow, that of Kaela Mensha Khaine, the Bloody Handed God. By narrowing their religious and cultural focus to include but a single aspect of the Elven Pantheon, the entire nature of these renegade elves changed very swiftly after the beginning of the civil war.
Under the guidance of the temple of Khaine, terrible rituals, sacrifices and other festivities have become a regular part of Dark Elf society. For example there is a time of the year among them known as Death Night. More than just a single night really, this period of time is one sacred to Khaine when his most beloved servants (the Witch Elves also known as the Brides of Khaine) roam the cities seeking those to sacrifice for their dark god. None are safe during this time and thousands are slain and sacrificed every year during this time. Even the survivors of Death Knight engage in their own bloody ritual after its completion, choosing and slaying a member of their own households in gratitude for having been spared.
The reckless abandon by which the Dark Elf people have embraced this singular aspect of their nature extends well beyond religion. Their practice of magic is almost exclusively that of Dhar, Dark Magic, and while they are a much more resilient race than humans when it comes to the corrupting nature of magic the continual use of Dhar and the associated dark rituals only seek to further enhance the corrupted nature of the people.
There are a great many outlets the Dark Elves have available to them for expressing the darker side of their nature. Through war and raiding they bring back many slaves that can be tortured, sacrificed and forced to work at their behest. Murder, assassination and cruel bloody sports are common occurrences within their society and one must always beware the knife in the dark from both enemy and ally. Even the art and architecture of the Druchii is but a manifestation of their cruel nature.
Given all this, there are still likely a lot of people who are drawn to the sadistic, sociopathic nature of the Dark Elves. As a race they are quite a fascinating study of how depraved a civilization can descend while remaining intact and not descending into a more base state of Chaos. To many players the allure of the Dark Elves likely stems from the possibility of playing something that is wholly inhuman and alien, evil and self-important creatures who seek to enslave and master all they encounter. While a great many folk love to play as the "good guys" in many games, so too are those who have a penchant for wishing to portray or play as evil characters as a break from their everyday lives.
It is thus among the Dark Elves of Warhammer that those of us who like to play as the badguys will find a most excellent race to select. Unlike the Greenskins, who are simply barbarous violent and cruel, the Dark Elves have a sophistication and a culture that is far more developed and which can provide a great many roleplaying opportunities. Unlike the forces of Chaos, Dark Elves do not seek an overthrow of the natural order, or the ruin of the world or any of a myriad other goals; rather the Druchii simply seek the mastery of all they survey, the enslavement of other races to whir whims and unquestionable power and mastery over all life itself. Simple enough goals, no?
The Dark Elves, as they are portrayed in the lore of Warhammer, are one of the most quintessential evil races in fantasy. Whatever the initial four career options may be, they are certain to be iconic representations of various aspects of the Dark Elf people and their nature. Each career is likely to be a method of expressing a different aspect of Dark Elf society and culture, one at its best as such things go, during a time of war and strife. Opportunistic to a fault the Dark Elves could never have idly sat by during the events that lead up to the Age of Reckoning and the beginning of WAR.
As a people the primary goals of the Dark Elves are the conquest of the High Elves and the taking of Ulthuan. Though they have established a new home for themselves in Naggaroth, the Dark Elves (and especially Malekith) covet their ancestral lands, seeing them as their own home that has been denied to them. Though the island nation has been wracked and damaged greatly by the conflict between the High and Dark Elves, the Dark Elves still push every opportunity to reclaim what they have lost. Unlike the High Elves who have been more of a dwindling race, the Dark Elves are actually quite a populous people by comparison. However their own infighting and self-destructive nature when coupled with the continuous conflict they seek has managed to keep their population much more stable than it would have been otherwise.
In order to obtain victory, in this new Age of Reckoning, Malekith has devised an ingenious plan to divide the attention of the High Elf people by instigating a great assault by the Greenskins to occur during a new incursion of Chaos from out of the north. These great troubles that will thus plague the world will leave, as it is hoped, Ulthuan open to their assaults. However in order to achieve victory the Dark Elves must ensure that not only the High Elves are defeated but also their allies, lest their noble kindred lower themselves to requesting the aid of human or dwarf.

The few things I find at fault with your theoretial analysis is your presumption that the heretical sect of Slaansh plays a large part in Druchii society. The Temple of Khaine rules the Dark Elf cities in a similair manner to the catholic church at the pinnacle of its power during the Italian Rennaisance. By compare The cult of Slaanesh is a small group of Protestants that get together for "tea" every now and then. Its not at all surprising that cults of Slaanesh thrive in the numerous Flesh houses of Druchii society, its the same thing for the human kingdoms and cities; even Altdorf will have its share of Pleasure cults. The cult of Slaanesh may be present in Druchii society but it does not rule nearly as openly as the Cult of Khaine, any observations of the Dark Elves getting all over each other in Flesh houses is merely the revelation of the fact that you have not gone to a human brothel (neither have I, im just saying its only logical) and so do not find it normal behavior.
Also, you speak of the Dark Elves as if they have all the freedom in the world to look up into the sun and dance around pretty flowers in the Land of Chill. Present day Naggorath is a living, frozen, hellish landscape with fierce winds and harsh storms. It is no wonder the Dark Elves foster such cruelty; such a culture thrives in a land that builds contempt for life. I'll admit, for the sake of reason, that the Dark Elves are to most lengths evil- but only a little more so than the Roman Empire in its heyday when gladiators died by the thousands in the Arena and Christians were put to torch, crucified, and fed to lions. And today the Roman civilization is viewed as one of the most accomplished in the history of the world, let alone the most civilized.
i don't wanna read all that, simplify please.
No, the Druchii never had much patience.
It is a nice read, that explains the society and mindset of the dark elfs for those not versed in lore, though I am not sure if you try to give an explanation or your personnel opinion.

I tell you what I would really like to see (Potentially in the new Malekith book) is an in depth account of how the dark elf society turned into what it is today.
Initially it must have just been high elf versus high elf, using the same units to battle over the throne after Malekith's failed attempt to seize power. I imagine this would occur with an almost equal number of elves accepting each heir to the throne, though perhaps only learning too late of the Sacred flame rejecting him? This is realistic because Malekith was indeed the direct heir, and what with elves being very particular at the best of times, I can imagine many of them would follow a true heir on that merit alone.
I imagine that once the Malekith's armies were defeated and banished to the new world, he began to resort to more desperate (and depraved) means of levelling the playing field.
Initially he might have just offered an amnesty for all elf sorcerers who wished to use the wind of Dharr (calling on their thirst for liberty). Malekith would need all the help he could to implement his new master plan, and accepted help from renegade wizard princes, and most importantly Hotek with the stolen hammer from Vaul's anvil.
The Druchii most likely didn't expect their stay in Naggaroth to be long term, (they certainly wouldn't want it to be since Naggaroth is cold inhospitable and without the magic of Ulthuan to make life easier) and resorted to a sort of Martial law, turning the whole population into potential soldiers and relying on slave labour, focusing souly (intended to temporally) on one god of the elf pantheon until the motherland is retaken. (Since the assaults fail, the worship of Khaine becomes increasingly ingrained in the Druchii psyche).
Then as time wore on the Witch king planned a last ditch effort to tamper with the vortex and sink Ulthuan when all hope of victory seemed lost. Once this final tactic failed, Malekith's pride in tatters and his hatred boundless, he preferred to allow factions within his followers to fight amongst themselves so he could focus all of his energy on retaking Ulthuan, and so society was allowed to devolve unchecked to slowly become what it is today.
Basically, I see it being a gradual but slippery slope into depravity rather than an instintaneous one. Any thoughts?

The shattering of your homeland was but a taste of what we will bring. As I have told you before, you may have tricked our King but you have never faced the likes of me before. I will turn your waters to red rivers of blood, twist your air into the eternal screams of your loved ones and ravage your land until it is fit for nothing more than insects.
Then perhaps I will take my armies and my massive numbers of high elven slaves and sail to the east or west or south and conquer a land where I will rule unquestioned. Be sure to mention my name to the Druchii that defeats you first and you will be spared for duty as one of my slaves in a new paradise, built on the foundations of what Aenaerion taught us so long ago. With enough time you may even learn to be an elf again.

We all have our reasons for anything, but if you wish to give your own view of the future to me, then I'll be more than happy to do the same to you. You never gave me the name of who's blood the rivers and land would run red with. Happily, I'll name it as your own kin's blood; stained with Nagarythe steel.
If your people have an army left, fit enough to even be called an army then it will only leave more work to do for my brethren. I hope this "idle banter" doesn't hide the fact to you that I will never rest, whether it be in this world of the next, until all of your kind die. Choose your death if you wish, although the Shadows will be more than glad to have you suffer for longer than a simple arrow or blade.

Breaking your will through years of torture will be a delight more exquisite than any simple victory ever could be. You Asur may dream of a simple glory but for me the true test will begin when you are conquered and in shackles before me. I will pick the skin from your loved ones piece by piece in front of your eyes. I will drink the blood of every Asur you have ever loved as you are forced to watch. Then I will bind their damned spirits to me and force them to slowly remove your eyelids so I can rub your bare orbs with poisons more painful than being torn to pieces by a Hydra. And then when I am bored with that the real torture will begin.

There is nothing I love more than the thought of your death. I promise you, I will make it hurt as much as is possible to me. Whether it be amid an ambush, or the capture of you and your people. There is no loss of love in war for me now, you can't hurt me anymore, Sorceress. The only thing that matters is who will be the first to break in battle, and I swear to you it won't be me. I'll break your arms, and pin you to the side of your Arks if it comes to it.

I promise you, I will make it hurt as much as is possible to me.Promises, promises. If you really meant that you'd be a Druchii.

The only thing that matters is who will be the first to break in battle, and I swear to you it won't be me. Oh I don't plan to break you in battle. Merely take away your little bow and sword and strip off your armor, leaving you helpless. You won't be broken until months of torture have passed. And if you have the nerve to break sooner I'll be very angry!
I'll break your arms, and pin you to the side of your Arks if it comes to it.Mmmm thanks. That will give me nice dreams.

I wasn't meant to be flattering you, but I did enjoy the fact that you wanted to know what my face was like though, so I guess we're even.
Enjoy your dreams though, as twisted as they are.

Dwarf humour... *sigh*
I'd sooner stitch my mouth closed before falling for a Druchii.

Either avenue would be quite amusing. That would make a rather interesting trophy, actually.

Nothing ruins a nice pleasant chat like a dwarf sticking his nose into it! :p

Well since the days good ole Skeletor and his guys had their quarrel with He-Man,no party (except a few Norwegian Black Metal Weirdos) openly admits that it is indeed "Evil" no matter how cruel their deeds.
DE society reminds me (on historical point of view) of ancient Rome or the 3rd Reich, the ideas of "survival of the fittest" and "being the superior race thus having the natural right to rule the world through force" are very strong in these cultures.
The DE society kinda sticks out by adopting these ideas on a daily routine, forcing it´s own citizens to be part of the fight for survival.
Every state tries to keep war outside its borders, for it is quite impossible to breed, farm, raise, prosper and try new cookie recipes having one hand on the handle of your sword all the time.
I know we are talking about Elves not humans, but I am sure they have a sort of not-so-evil middle worker and farmer class which doesn´t indulge in backstabbing and warfare regularly. Maintainig a highly skilled and numeros fighting force is a costy thing and it normally needs a strong economy behind.

Dark elves are not emo.
No dark elf would sit at the back of a room drinking cheap red wine and feel sad and lonely.
No dark elf would moap about with the hair over their eyes feeling abandoned and sad.
The thing is an emo is just a baby goth and a dark elf is so much beyond goth, punk or whatever is past punk.
An emo will naturally be offended by my words but then truth can hurt :)
Personally I find the emo kind of cute.. if confused but no matter they will all grow out of it once they grow into adulthood.
