hmm, this is interesting. i have been one of the biggest supporter of WAR in my guild (which includes DDO, WOW, CoH/V, DAoC and others). perhaps i should turn up my skills of persuasion and convince more people to look into this. with almost 2k members my guild could really help out in beta testing.
they didn't say beta would be this summer, they said contests and the like to get into beta would be this summer. bit of a difference.
in the grab bag sanya *sort of* answered the 2 or 3 side issue. quoted here for those of you who don't have the newsletter yet:
"Q: How many realms will there be in WAR?
A: Short answer: we are launching with two realms, six armies, and three battlefronts. Each realm is comprised of a loose alliance of armies that have formed out of circumstance (see the game’s backstory for more details) – the Alliance of Order (Dwarfs, High Elves, and the Empire) and the Armies of Destruction (Greenskins, Dark Elves, and Chaos). Everything you do in WAR furthers the cause of your army and thus your realm.
Realm vs. Realm™ combat in WAR centers around the above armies and takes place on one of three fronts where ancient foes battle one another – Dwarfs vs. Greenskins, High Elf vs. Dark Elf, and Empire vs. Chaos humans. Players begin the game fighting their racial enemy, but are later free to journey to other battlefronts to help their allies in the larger struggle.
A particular dark elf, for example, can work with allies to invade the capital cities of the Empire, high elves, or the dwarfs. That same dark elf can choose instead to defend his own lands or those belonging to his Greenskin or Chaos "allies." Assuming his own interests don't incline him towards betrayal, of course."
Her last line makes one wonder though...

Q: Betaaaaaaaaaaa. *drools* Where is the beta sign up!
A: There will be contests, sign up forms, guild betas, and more. Starting (for the most part) this summer. Watch the newsletter and the websites for more information.
Yes, I said guild beta. I'll be putting that together and taking applications late this summer. Guilds will be judged based on how active your members are in your current game or forum (NOT number of members), the length of time you've been together, your website, and more. We'll want a mix of guild types, of course, so my best advice for potential guilds is to be who you are with as much style as possible.

The fluff for the marshes of madness were great- definately gonna be where i go first with my dwarf
Vervayne
04-21-2006, 12:16 PM
I noticed the bit on betrayal. Whatever could it mean, hmmmmmm.
yeah verv, after re-reading the answer again for the 180th time i think the last line is just to put us on our heels...in other words, it doesn't really mean anything.
Like in her example:
"A particular dark elf, for example, can work with allies to invade the capital cities of the Empire, high elves, or the dwarfs. That same dark elf can choose instead to defend his own lands or those belonging to his Greenskin or Chaos "allies." Assuming his own interests don't incline him towards betrayal, of course."
her use of the word betrayal is probably too strong of a word. the dark elf probably can't attack his allies or back stab them through an action - the only way he could "betray" them is through inaction and not helping them defend their capitals or attack their enemy capitals. And by being inactive they aren't really betraying their allies, they're just not helping them. So i think that last sentence really holds no meaning in the grand scheme of rvr and it appears that the system will indeed be 2 sides, 6 "races", 3 fronts - at least at lower levels. If mixing is encouraged, as it appears it will be, at higher levels we shall see a new emain.

As for the content - a bit of a disappointment here, mainly because I saw Paul's videos earlier, but still good :). I love the artwork for the chaos giant. The jaw on the side of his belly is a nice touch but I absolutely hate the eyes on his thigh. I hate eyes in such awkward places ;).
The in-game model of the normal giant isn't as menacing as his concept art brother. I think it reminds me of one of our polititians...
Many years ago I worked for a place that did email surveys on the side, and it would take half a day just to send 50k emails. I'm sure newer hardware can do it much faster, but even just sending them can take a lot of time.

Trying to steal my thunder, eh, Alluvian?... :p
To add something to the topic, Karl Kopinski has to be the best artist ever (followed by Adrian Smith). Still, I find this picture of his (http://www.warhammeronline.com/english/behindTheScenes/theMakingOf/images/Decimation_of_Praag_Final_Full.jpg) not so detailed and good overall as his other works. Might just be the small size and too much brightness tho'.
Is it the Tzeentchian Champion portrayed here? Or another indication that only Tzeentch will be available at launch? I'm guessing the former, though making Karl decide how one of the main characters in the game would look like seems a bit awkward to me - but maybe that wasn't the case at all and Mythic has already finished the model for the Champion, or at least his concept art?... Hm, Mythic? :p
In the background you can see a demon and a chaos giant. Will those beasts take active role in city sieges? Would be cool if that was the case, no?

Its not a picture of the Tzeentchian Champion. Its a picture of the Great Chaos Invasion, which happened way back before the "current" Warhammer. It shows Magnus the Pious fighting against some Chaos leader, im not sure about his name. The Empire won that fight though.
Requiemourn

Yeah, that's what I thought at first too, until I read this paragraph:
"This is the first of three paintings by acclaimed Games Workshop artists commissioned by Mythic to illustrate the events leading up to the Age of Reckoning."
It doesn't really indicate one way or another but I figured that if it happened in the normal WH timeline (as we know the game will be put on a side track in terms of placing in time) then how could it influence the Age of Reckoning?
And "The Decimation of Praag" title doesn't really indicate that the Empire has won :p. Well, actually, I know that in Warhammer it could've happened but I still felt tempted to say that ;).

No, Achaeon didn't go to Pragg. He went to Middeheim to corrupt that sacred flame thing. He bypassed Pragg completely.
The painting we have here seems to indicate that Pragg has either fallen or been wrecked to the point where it may not appear in game.
If Pragg has fallen... that's.. that's just crazy, heh.

In the description of how the paiting was creating, it blatantly says that Champion is a Champion of Tzeentch.
As mentioned above, this painting represents something that has happened in WAR.

Praag is constantly in a fallen state, more or less, as far as I'm concerned ;). In one of the slayer novels (Beastslayer I think), Praag has indeed fallen and it was mentioned there that it has happened yet another time. It was said that from all the sieges and times the city switched hands the streets themselves became warped by Chaos.
But I don't really believe that it's going to be repopulated by Kislevites this time.
I always wondered, what would be the capitol of Chaos that other players might siege. And since Chaos can't really be beaten and doesn't have a capitol, does this mean that the best we can do is to push back the Chaos incursion by destroying their base camp at Praag?
Kinda like in the case of Orcs that made a new home for themselves out of Karak Eight-Peaks and I imagine it would be the exact same case with Dark Elves, since I don't think Lustria will be included at release. Sounds neat, if you'd ask me - the baddies in Warhammer always seemed to have the upper hand and it was the good guys that had to struggle to survive. The idea that pushing back the invasion is the best the Order can get conveys the feel of Warhammer well, IMO.
EDIT: Mispelled Eight-Peaks. I knew this was going to happen to me sooner or later. Karak Eight-Peeks sounds like a name for a cheap porno star. Not that I would know anything about it :p.
Also, I suck at geography :|.

Dark elves come from Naggaroth, Lizardmen come from Lustria ;)

It doesn't actually fall in that book though, the walls are breached and Gotrek kills the lead guy when he goes inside.
So it gets pretty messed up yeah, but Chaos doesn't take control of it.
And since Chaos can't really be beaten and doesn't have a capitol, does this mean that the best we can do is to push back the Chaos incursion by destroying their base camp at Praag?
Hmmm... that's a thought, hadn't considered that.
Question though. In Beastslayer, it's mentioned that something is "sleeping" under Pragg and that's why Chaos keeps trying to take it. Anyone know exactly what that is?
