It was once the case that when someone edited a post it would react almost as if there had been a new post. The thread would be bumped to the top of the forum and would be labeled: 'Last edited by suchandsuch'
This was good as it encouraged the use of edits instead of double posting when you have a new point to put in your post. However now if you edit in a somewhat lazy thread then it is likely no one will view it.
I just want to know if it was a decision made not to have edits working in this way or if it is just becuase of the new forum format and whether it could be implemented in the future.

But then people would use editing as an excuse for bumping their threads.

That's a possibility - but this forum is generally quite mature and I don't think that would be the case (well in terms of someone editing every five minutes to bump his thread) But people could bump their threads as it is with new posts. Or deleting their previous post and then posting the same thing again. Creating a new account for bumping etc - it can be done anyway but this feature makes it possible for someone to edit a post that is say three posts away from the most recent and then it will be reconised and people would notice it.
EDIT: *looks down* EXACTLY what I am talking about Dante.... doubt you will read this though as there is no way for you to know I have made this edit :P

Another reason editing should be implemented again is that when you edit your post in a thread at the end of the forum to add something , no one will know you added something new and won't pay any attetion to it, thus resulting in a "Dead" thread and in an opening of a new but similar/same thread.

Quoted for Truth.
But as explained people can bump things anyway - guess there will be a new era of double posting.:-?

Alas, bumping is against the forum rules. As such those people will quickly find themselves posting on other websites.

That said, what is the reason against edits then? Harder to moderate? Surely you can see the positives as well?

His point is, that people edit and no one can tell. Therefore the edit goes unnoticed and the thread is not looked at. Therefore, unless you edit it before people read the thread, no one will know you have done. If they are waiting for a reply, an edit is useless.
As you said, bumping is not allowed, so people who use edits for that purpose can be removed. Obviously if someone is editing repeatedly without any difference you can tell, so there would not be a problem.

Actually after a period of time passes and you edit a thread you can indeed tell the thread was edited. At the bottom it will say, edited by and give a time. Now lets say this indeed updated the thread and pushed it to the top. A person could edit a thread with 100+ replies and I would have to dig through the pages of responses just to find the one that said edited and that days date. It's much easier to just goto the last post and see if someone is bumping old threads.
The updating edited threads has never been a feature on these forums and currently there are no plans to make this a feature.

Having Edits bump threads isn't something the forums support by default anyway. It could be coded with a plugin, but i'm sure the Team has better things todo than make something that will proberly just cause more problems than its worth anyway. :)
