Hi,

After reading a few threads about speculation on the Black Guard's Hatred mechanic, and seeing them fall into a WAR v WOW debate, I decided to post my idea about Hatred.

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS ONLY MY IDEA. I DO NOT HAVE INSIDE INFORMATION ABOUT HATRED.

What many people seem to think about hatred is that it is a renewable resource in that you gain some, you spend some. I however think I could work as such:

Think of a pendulum. Most pendulums start out in the middle, not moving. Call this the default state a BG begins in.

Then picture the extreme left swing as the High DPS side and the extreme right as the High Tanking side.

Now, as the BG does damage, the pendulum goes towards the DPS side. The more DPS he does, the further it swings left. If he continues, he goes into a more berserk state, and the pendulum hits its maximum on the left side. Here, he does maximum DPS, and "tears stuff up".

Now, as the BG takes damage, the pendulum swings to the tanking side. The more damage he takes, the further the pendulum swings right. As it swings right, he takes less damage via parry/armor/defense. If he takes enough damage, the pendulum swings all the way right, and he becomes the most effective tank he can.

Hatred would have to be dynamic in that it changes based on what the BG is doing, and who is attacking him he will swing between tanking and DPSing as he gains effectiveness either way. Black Guard's abilities are unlocked based on how far he is to either side. What is important is that using abilities does not swing you the other way. If a BG goes out of combat, he is obviously not hating anyone, and thus the pendulum gradually settles back to the normal position.

Morale and tactics possibilities can be starting out on one side (slightly) or attempting to shift the pendulum to the other side.

Thoughts? Comments? Flames?

I don't like it. It undermines the proposed talents and specializations within the game. It would also undermine Black Orcs and Chosen.

But you are a dwarf, why should you care :p

Just kidding, but could you explain why it undermines Black Orcs and Chosen?

Black Orcs and Chosen are different kind of tanks whom will most likely require different positioning to be effective. Your proposed Hate system will allow the BG to do both things depending on the situation.

EDIT: Also.. it'd be a little difficult to position yourself as a Black Gaurd. As tanks, I expect they'd be in the fray like everyone else. So I could see the pendulum would be swinging back and forth. It'd be difficult to use some abilities.

Interesting approach. This way, if I understand it right, to stop the Black Guard from doing damage you've got to damage him... but that also makes him a better tank.

Only problem might be that it gives control of how the class plays to the enemy. But interesting approach nonetheless.

Or you could just stick to Mythic's plan and allow the hatred to build up as you get attacked which gates stronger abilities. This will not change. It's the whole idea behind the Black Guard... the more you beat on it, the more pissed off it gets, the harder it hits.
