View Full Version : Post Count Display Change - 4/25/06

Hey guys, I alluded to the fact that this may be coming several months ago. Originally, I intended to do it after E3 – but after thinking about it some more it was decided that now would be a better time.

As some of you have probably noticed, your post counts are no longer displayed under your username. You can still check anyone’s post count by clicking on their profile and looking there, but they will not be visible under usernames anymore.

We’re getting a lot of new folks joining our community right now. Its going to be this way from here on out probably and we want to ensure that the focus of the posts remains on their quality, rather than their quantity.

Anyway, it’s a small change really but it’s a change nonetheless and should be explained. As always, if you’ve got any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks! :D

It's funny cause this is something I've been contimplating suggesting for the last two days, just never have. Ah well, good change in my opinion.

That's cool Garthilk. It's nice to see the Admins and Mods have the best intentions for the community.

Thank you, thank you!!!

This really puts the point on quality instead of quantity and will help keep these forums great.

Appreciated so much! I was just hoping this would happen.

Good change imho. It discourages the VN post count mentality. The less this place is like VN the better. Boards should be about post quality, not post quantity. :)

Anyone who thinks differently, compare here to VN WAR boards. No contest. ;)

Yeah, it is a big relief. Being a Veteran of the VN for a couple years now I can agree with the fact that nothing constructive ever evolves from them (except maybe classe boards).

This change will also help to deter my subconscious urge to be sarcastic with people like I am on the VN boards.

Joking of course. ;)

Nice change. The less incentive to boost post counts, the better off we are.

Great change, all post counts lead to is farming and people using the number to somehow discredit peoples ideas.

The reality is the post counts aren't removed. They're just removed from the display. If you click on peoples profiles you can still see them. Now if people get overzealous we may just remove them and the titles completely. There is a spectrum of things we can do to help minimize spam. This is the first step. If subsequent steps are needed then when the time comes we'll definately takes whatever steps necesary to ensure the quality content on these forums.

I think titles should be gifts from the moderators to the good members of the forum. The guys constantly putting in effort to better the forums. Scrap the counts and post-titles completely, and go for a manual title system.
I don't need to explain the benefits of such a system to you. But it'd be cool.

We have what, over 1000 members? That seems a bit like over doing it, but I really like the removal of the posts, now people will realize that you're new because of what you say instead of what they see. There'll still be "U R teh Uber-leet N00bl3t! Pwnd!" and all that, but hopefully not by the portion of the community that know how to spell grammor.

I think it's a good idea too. I read the post, not how many other posts the poster made (thats alot of posts!).

I mainly just lurk and read anyways, I hardly ever post unless it is on a thread I feel strongly about.

I'm going to agree with Corellion on this one.

But anywho a good change as it is.

You are an evil evil person Sippe Heldenhammer! ;)

Perhaps we should take away the join date as well? Nah, then J will prolly go after the titles.

I will add my totally gratuitous approval reply (even though my post count will not be displayed). Good work, I agree, excellent!

I just noticed that post counts weren't displayed anymore, so i had to find the right thread to thank someone! :)

On another forum i frequent someone who joined 22 days ago already worked their way up to 6% of the total post count. He added his less than one sentance reply to half of the old threads. He's the only user where i don't click on the thread if i see his name as the most recent poster. I think post counts are pointless.

Umm, just wondering is this a joke?

But... but... but!

Everyone knows the more posts you have the bigger your E-peen is! Right?

;)

Good call though, it's always a wee bit annoying when you join a new message board and your reply imeadiatly gets discredited because it's your third post.

Funny, I alway thought ePeen was measured by the size of your sig?

Removing post count was a good idea. As for removing the date you signed up to the forums, not many folks really care about it.

Any newb can make a giant sig, but it takes a true board troll to generate a massive post count ;)

*looks at his 7000+ post count on VN and sighs*

im glad the post count was removed, it stops people from being stuck-up about their ability to churn out posts like some kind of hybrid post, churning, churn... poster...

um...

o yeh, i was thinking about the join date tho, i know its not as bothered with as post counts were, but some people still can take the p*** purely because your a newbie (newbie, not Noob) to the site. I mean, i joined very recently, but i like to think that has no effect on the impression i give other forum users.

im mainly in it for the RPing though, and most RPers tend to be very nice, and very down-to-earth.

(dont get me wrong, not saying all non-RP posters arent)

anyways, its good to see moderators and admin actually working for the forum community, some forums have pretty shameful mods and admins nowadys

cheers guys.

P.S. i apologise for the essay-ness of this post :p

Oh hey Lynx,

Btw all those quality posts and threads don't count anymore because we are getting new people. Hope you don't mind kthxbai.

The impression you give me is that you enjoy bringing threads back to life that have no consequence to anyone anymore.

Of course this doesn't really bother me so much as make me have to read original post dates.

Yi_Kwang_Hang
12-29-2006, 07:12 PM
i didnt neccessarily mean for that to happen, i just looked at dead threads that had an interesting starting point, and some i looked at have turned into activ(ish) threads that people are having good discussions on.

dont hate me for posting in threads i found interesting :(

KroqGar

I never said I hate you, I just said that now I have to actually read the original post dates.

I never said I hate you,

^^^ it was just a figure of speech :?

yes, but why should the origional post dates matter? if someone makes a thread about something interesting and someone else posts ages later, why does that mean you can't post your opinion? it's not against the rules to post in an old thread. as long as there's some one still posting in it you shouldn't worry about how old it is.

KroqGar
12-29-2006, 07:45 PM
But for the most part, people have already solved the problem so I want to know whether or not there is a need for me to post in the thread.
