Found this looking around a few other sites for newsletter info: Empire Wizards (http://mythicmktg.fileburst.com/war/us/media/newsletter/2007_09/NL_newSS_0905.jpg)

That grey one looks like a bad Gandalf clone to tell you the truth.

And the green one? He looks like a homeless ex hippie lol.

Celestial Wizards don't use weapons? Or did they just not show one? And I almost wish we had a Amethyst wizard, if for no other reason than getting scythes *drool*.

Celestial wizards from what I recall were for the most part not directly invovled with fight they were normally used for their other abilities like seeing into the future.

The grey one looks like the old TT model, which was based on Gandolf long before the movies came out. The hippie looks like a druid (the historical kind)... which is what he is.

I think they did a pretty good job all things considered.

:D Actually, Grey Wizards used to be very much based on Gandalf, from what I can tell. They used to be weather-wizards who would ride the countryside in their grey robes and pointy hats dispensing wisdom and doing good deeds.

Then came the 6th edition of WHFB, where they became shadow-illusionists, feared and despised even more than the typical wizard, who go around infiltrating Chaos cults and conspiracy groups and bringing them down from the inside.

Anyways, looking at the artwork, I'm not digging the Celestial Wizard's pope-hat, but aside from that I like them, and their looks fit the lore well.

I thought they went movement/shadow based way back in 4th ed with celestial doing the weather thing. I admit I get a few of the orders mixed up from time to time...

Think it was the 6th edition. At least, the magic supplement book I bought when the 5th edition was still going on has them as weather wizards (although Celestial Wizards did still have lightning and wind, oddly enough).

Having just flipped through that book actually reminded me of how much Warhammer's lore can change in just one edition, as some Colleges seemingly got completely rewritten in what they can do. To give a quick comparison:

----------Current----------------------------Old
Grey: Illusion and Shadow------------Weather
Amethyst: Death-----------------------Time
Light: Light, Healing, Exorcisms------Earthquakes

I like the artwork. Looks like wizards like a nice warm pair of socks.

I like how they gave the Grey Wizard a sword, as it represents their symbol "The Sword of Judgement". I also like the rose details for the Amethyst Wizard, however i think they forgot the hourglass :?.

You will see small hour-glass embroidered onto his tabard-thingy, and also a little one hanging from the scythe.

Essentially, Amethyst seem to be the embodiment of baroque-style, with the numerous vanitas-symbols, ie. references to death and frailness (Such as hour-glasses, skulls, flowers, fruit and even bubbles)

Yeah, that was a weird one. Basically, what it says in the old book is that Light Magic is unstable and hard to control, and it easily seeps into the ground, causing the earth to be unstable, and thus causing earthquakes.

The concept artist really did a good job of putting in the little symbols and styles associated with the different Orders:

-Amethyst: Scythe instead of staff; clean-shaven and bald; symbols of the rose, skull, and hourglass.

-Grey: Wears a sword; wears a hood to help hide his face; if he didn't carry a staff, his look wouldn't necessarily scream 'wizard'

-Jade: Plantlife in his hair; staff looks like it may still be alive; wears a sickle at his side.

-Celestial: Stars, comets, and moons on the robe; carries astronomy equipment.

Light magic used to be all about invisible forces and kinetic energy, and light energy was described as sinking into the bedrock. Accordingly, preventing earthquakes was one of the Light Colleges most respected feats. With 6th edition Warhammer it was recast as more generic White Magic, dealing with the spheres of order, healing and balance. Personally I prefer the older version. The abilities of the current Lore of Light would fit better as High Magic IMO.

Anyway, I like these pictures very much. Those wizards knock the socks off the Chaos Magi in the background.

Great stuff I say.

The artworker has done a very good job in representing these four wizards with their specific order traits....just look at that Amethyst Wizard, the rose, the scythe, the hourglass, the skull...wonderful, just wonderful..

I bet they are creating a new alchemical weapon for the war, too busy to run around like errand boys. Now what about the Light and Amber orders...

Indeed they are. I sure hope there will be some around.

I'm willing to bet a fair chunk of cash that all 8 will make an appearance somewhere in the game, even if only 1 is playable.

Wizards > that imo.

Shoulders and armor look terribly overdone, the disc is as lame and annoying in concept art as it is ingame, and their staff looks like a spear.
