The trailer for Tim Burton’s big screen musical thriller adaptation Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street hits theaters this weekend (supposedly attached to The Heartbreak Kid), but why buy a ticket when you can see it online for free right now.
I’ve never been a big fan of musicals, but I’ve been following Sweeney Todd with much interest. And it looks like Tim Burton has made something special. The musical sequence shown in the trailer with Johnny Depp in the streets is unlike anything I have ever seen before. What do you guys think?

I love musicals. I'm going to give it a shot tomorrow if I can indeed watch it online; I'm too tired as of today ;)
BTW, is it the weekly "Garth gives us the heads up on new films"-day? :D

I heard Warner Brothers had them, no pun indented, hack the movie to bits. It would have been rated R but, WB thought a musical couldn't be R also to hit the biggest demographic of course. So, WB had Tim Burton edit it down.
When it comes out on DVD it is probably be the director's cut. I can see this is going to be a trend now, started with Die Hard 4. Show the edited movie in theaters as PG-13 and then show the actual movie on DVD.

Aw seriously, XShrike? I was hoping and hoping they would go for an R rating and make it nice and bloody ala From Hell . Oh well. Looks like I'll be buying the Unrated D-Cut
As for the movie itself though, I've been following it too. Can't wait.
Gothic musical directed by Burton and starring Depp = win.

I seldom do this but...
QFT.
Tim Burton must be the biggest source of inspiration I have, and this seems to be shaping up to be another masterpiece. To bad about the forced PG-13 rating, but if the original version comes out on dvd you won't hear me complain.

Found the article, "Johnny's demon barber faces a brutal slashing (http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/pages/live/articles/showbiz/bazbamigboye.html?in_article_id=477380&in_page_id=1794&in_a_source=)". I found it through Rotten Tomatoes.

During filming at Pinewood studios, prosthetic lookalike limbs were used (obviously the real thing would have been taking realism too far!) and they were so gruesomely lifelike that some of the crew became nauseous and had to take fresh air breaks.
That's pathetic for people in the movie business.. it's not like they smelled of decomposition or anything.

That was a rumour and it's not true. It's been officially rated R. Try to stay up to date if you're going to post scary rumours ;)

Sounds great, anyway. I most likely dislike unecessary gore etc., but Burton and Depp doing a version of a Sondheim musical is something I couldn't miss.

I swear that Depps agent MUST be on Burtons speed dial. How many of Burtons movies has Depp starred in now?
oh and I HATE musicals. I can handle them is sometrhing like Nightmare Before Christmas but in live action? /pass The story did however look interesting.

The Depp + Burton combo is indeed formidable.

Well Burton IS my favourite producer/director/whatever the hell he is, and Johny Depp is quite a good actor, plus that trailer really got me interested. And I was really impressed with the sequence on the street, interesting is a mild word for it.

What a perfect cast for Sweeney Todd. There are only a handful of musicals I like but this one is one of my favorites.

I like Tim Burton's Movies - and I have been a musician for 30 years but I really despise musicals - Iwill probably pass on this one.

Burton is...alright, I think he gets overhyped but personal feelings aside he IS a good director for this movie.
Depp....no, in the trailer alone, no. Hearing him go high in that "who sir, you sir?" part enraged me, Todd had a low, powerful baratone voice, and this....ugh.
I'll rent it, or pirate it, but I won't make a special trip for it.
I think Burton would be great if he would get off Depp's , Depp is good in...Pirates, or What's Eating Gilbert Grape, he was wonderful in that, but in this, and Willy Wonka, ugh, it's clear they have some deal going on for this, which would work if Burton was the type to make dramas/normal comedy, but he does black humor, which is not Depp's world.

Er, you know Sweeney Todd is a fictional character, right? That if you saw him cast with a baritone voice in a production of Sondheim's musical, that was a choice, right?
You're also not, perhaps, confusing Sweeney Todd with, y'know, Tony Todd? Because Tony Todd well, THAT is a deep voice.

Actually, I think he did pretty nice as Willy Wonka, and no matter how hard I try, I can't think of anyone else more appropriate for that part. And, it may be just my opinion, but he looked really... demonic, sinister as Sweeney in the trailer.

He LOOKS the part just fine, but he sounds way off the wall compared to all the other versons, that's what gets me.
As for Wonka...well I personally would have said 'just don't remake it', kinda one of those 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' moments.
