From what I've seen, there will be shields. The art drawings were put together with the Swordmasters. So I guess Swordmasters have three options. Dual wielding, twohanded wielding, sword and shield. Not the point of this thread, however.
My question is, has anyone seen anything that might suggest the presence of spears in game? Other than the screens of Knights of the Blazing Sun holding a spear, I mean. I just pray and hope there's spears for high elves, too.

It depends on what the Melee class will be I guess because I don't see Swordmasters having the option of non-sword weapons, despite their ability to kill you with just about anything they can get hold of.
I'd like to see the spears make an appearance for the elves in some form though, it is their classic infantry equipment: all three elf cultures make use of them in a significant way.

I could see Swordmasters maybe having an option for Sword & shield use, but it will be interesting to see the next classes revealed and confirmed.
I really hope there is some form of spear & shield fighting, because that is my favorite weapon combination.

I agree that Spears should make it in some form, they are staple to their militaries. Keep in mind that most Swordmasters were likely citizen militia in their younger days, and, although it's not their iconic gimmick, they would be just as capable with a spear than with a sword.

They are trained in a lot of different weapons too, unarmed, spear, staff, and etc. :D

Absolutely. I can't see Mythic leaving something like this out. I'm sure spears will make an appearance in some form or another.

One thing I'd like to see is this. If the White Lions are in, axe and shield warriors. That would rock. A lot like the new high elf hero miniature.

If they put in mounted combat, then they should include spears and give them a bonus to mounted foes...even if it's just giving them a greater chance to knock the enemy off their mount.

I...don't really see it, precisely because spears are a staple of the High Elf militia forces. Spears are the levy's weapon; the experienced elves of the levy, true, but not the weapon of professional Asur; Maiden Guard use them but I don't see them as tanks for so many reasons, Swordmasters could use them but will, here at least as in TT, use only swords as it is their defining feature, White Lions they don't suit at all, Phoenix Guard would certainly have halberds and probably no shield option then, so unless we see dismounted cavalry filling the tank role, I don't expect to play a shield-and-spear class. That's not a mistake on Mythic's part either, and I reckon we will see many Asur in their distinctive tall helms wielding a spear and long shield, but they will be the ordinary guards and npc's fighting alongside us and manning defences as is only fitting where the players are all elite/heroic characters and npc's the regulars.

That is all.

Considering that the final classes will be White Lions and Shadow Warriors, I very highly doubt anything like this would be put in. However much I wish it was, it won't be. White Lions and Swordmasters are the only ones who would use them, and they have their iconic weaponry already. Mythic seems to be evry stalwart on the class weaponry. Hammerers only using hammers, things like that. So, don't expect Swordmasters to be using anything other than swords and shields, or White Lions to have anything but axes.
I just don't see it happening, which really is a shame because it looks so elegant.

Oops. I knew that. Sorry, I was very tired. Ok, so then no debate, we sure as hell aren't going to see spear and shield as tank is only real contender, and no spear-armed troop type fits as melee dps.

It was pointed out in another thread (not sure where atm.. I'm too tired to look) that the artwork of the SM "dual wielding" is actually him holding his sword in one hand and his scabbard in the other.
The argument is that we don't expect the SM or other tanks to be able to DW. That will be left for melee DPS.
Oh and spears would be awesome, but I think they would be reserved for some form of new class at a later date.
