simply put, the best game i've played all year.

it was short, yes, but it was like this awesomely tasty and moist cake that was a bit expensive and small but it tasted so damn good that you are just glad you ate it.

in my opinion they nailed everything: the mood, the atmosphere, the puzzles, the story, the ending and the credits. i loved every second of it. it was something unique and innovative for a change.

i can't wait for the mapping community to get their hands dirty with this.

anyone else got thoughts?

You beat it already? How long, estimated (or exact if you know) did it take? Cause it's probably the game I'm most interested in, from The Orange Box. (That and TF2).

The concept is awesome. It shows how far video games have progressed over the last years. If you had mentioned a game with mechanics like this 5 years ago, you would've been laughed at.

you can do it in about 2½ hours if you only think of completing the game. exploring spaces should give you another 30-60 minutes. it's very short but there are some advanced versions of the maps available after you complete it giving you something extra to do.

I didn't realize that Portals story is tied in with Half Life's story.

They have been hinting at that throughout the entire development process.

The game is great.

I love the AI's dialogue, it proved a constant source of hillarity, and the end credit song... well, I have a friend already trying to find a copy of the MP3 for me.

It alone is worth the purchase of the box.

the only thing I ever saw of the game prior to release was the trailer for it. Perhaps I wasn't looking or i just didn't care.

Oh and if you find a copy of the song I want it.

edit: you know what I think i know of a way I will just fraps it then lift off the sound to an a mp3 the quality might not be that great but its worth a shot

That was the only thing i didn't like actually, A "nasally" Stephen Hawking that just keeps taaaaaalking. My friend was playing some game or watching tv behind me while i was playing and about 15 minutes in he just screamed SHUT THE F**K UP! and i don't blame him.

GLaDOS was great! really made the game for me, some of her comments near the end had me cracking up, and the credits finished me off XD

Just after you escape the fire and she asks you to assume the "Party position"? Genius.

Holy... crap. Episode 2 was awesome. I can't wait to play Episode 3 and see how it ties in more with Portal.

As for Portal, it's a really good, innovative game. I beat it in just over 3 hours the first time, and just under 2 hours the second time. I've got half of the advanced maps done (crap that third map is hard...) and haven't tried the trials.

"The Steam servers are currently too busy to handle your request. Please try again in a few minutes."

Has anyone got this pop-up message when trying to launch Portal? The game worked perfectly yesterday, I played through and beat it. But starting last night, and still this morning, when I try to load the game, I keep getting that message.

I tried deleting the ClientRegistry.blob and then loading steam and letting it re-update, but to no avail.

Help? I want to play Portal again. :( :( :(

Edit: Nevermind. It's working now. Just me being overly anxious. >_>

the cake is lie in my sig gives nothing away and tbh even if does give away whats the wall it hardly matters tbh as you cant even guess were the line comes from.

also you reading a thread about Portal wtf do you expect were are going to be talking about the game, if you dont want it to be runned dont read the bloody thread.

Only thing is, I wish the game was longer. I'm working through the time trials at the moment. Getting the gold medal in some of them is insane, damn near impossible if you ask me. Though we'll see, I'm sure someone will video themselves actually completing them.

Tbh I didn't expect anything. I was just saying that I was just quite disappointed about that phrase when I discovered it ingame as I knew it beforehand and you probably should treat it a bit more carefully until the novelty of Portal wears off.

No need to get all agitated.

I am so looking forward to Portal speedruns, not only those few level, but the whole game. I expect people to do some seriously crazy stuff with it, like infinite looping for speed and then doing nothing but portaling to move.

im sorry Abr4 if i came off harsh, thats quite out of character for me, anyway the point im makeing is, if you just here the cake is a lie you wont have a freaking clue what im going on about, second this is thread about portal so its going to be full of spoilers, and im not the only one blurting out the cake is lie, i just happen to have it as my sig and t-shirt and quite possable going to be my in game addy from know on but still. i hope you can see were im comeing from, looking in a thread about a game and moning about spoilers is a bit stuiped.

I can do most of the limited portal trials. And the time aren't so bad. It's the step that seem to get me. I need to figure out how to use the portals for efficient movement better I guess.

I loved the game, everything was pretty easy up until bonus level 18, which drove me nuts for awhile :P

I still have fun with the game even after I beat all the time trials, so that's how I know it's really good. Seriously though, when mappers get their hands on this, oh man oh man this is going to take off, I cannot wait to see some of the crazy things people come up with.

Also, TF2 is awesome, SNIPER for life! :P Episode 2 was amazing, definitely one of the better games this year, can't wait for episode 3 :D

You know, the more I think about that, the more I actually think the length is just fine.

It's hard to judge objectively in a game like this, but by the end? I felt like I sort of was getting the hang of things. I can fling with the best of them, I could pull off the more complex 'double' flings, or triple flings. I had played around for a good while for good measure. I felt the same way at first, but the more I play the extra content I kind of got the feeling that it was just right.

My real only complaint is so much of the game is tutorial. I really didn't feel like I had to have my hand held through so much of the game, considering I didn't start really having fun with it until the puzzles got complex.

Good lord challenge mode is rough though.

Also yeah, Half Life Episode 2 for me was shocking--I seriously couldn't have cared less about it when I bought the box, and was sort of shrugging and being like "You know, I'm kind of done with HL2."

Fifteen minutes in. And all I could say was "MORE."

The final segment of EP 2 is pure gaming bliss. I haven't felt that sense of urgency in a game for quite some time.

I just watched some speed runs on youtube. Half of the time I don't even know what they're doing or where they're going oO

I had to watch this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zr1nOzG5LYg) for example like three times before I knew where he was porting to.

Then I tried for an hour to reproduce it, but the odd auto turns you do when you're not looking straight up or down while entering a floor-floor portal just got me dizzy :x

I would have bought the O box for my PC, but since it wouldn't be able run it smoothly, I opted to buy it for the *cough* 360 *cough*. I think Portal is the most inovative game to come out the last ten years, maybe more. It is fantabulous. Best game for your money on the market.

Yes, they most definitely can, and it's name was Ricochet, lol :P Although you are right, they have constantly released very good games, hell, the more I play TF2 the more I love it. I think a sign of their dominance is the fact that no matter how many games I play, I still always come back to counter-strike (not source... ewwww), and I'm always able to spend awhile playing it, sort of like Diablo 2.

I was really looking forward to this game and was blown away by it when it came out, I just wish it was longer.

I now demand a place to purchase a plush Wieghted Companion Cube.

I've actually heard that Valve will be selling plush Weighted Companion Cubes on their store site soon, so check that often.

But in the mean time you can make your own W.C.C (http://kotaku.com/gaming/papercraft/portal-papercraft-311187.php). Sadly it comes with no instructions and I have yet to take the time to figure it out myself, but someone else did here (http://greg.medding.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/1192298135556.jpg).

EDIT: All we need now is a an Aperture Science miniature Turret that has a motion sensor that says various comments and also a sensor that can tell if its been knocked over to say another set of comments.
