Has anyone else heard about the Dragon Lance moive? it is based off the popular novels. it is animated however so i'm curious to see how it will turn out. I've been waiting for a DL movie for a while i hope it turns out good.

any other Dragon Lance fans here?

Yes, I have been following it. There is a officaial website with a list of the actors who will be voicing. I just wish it was a CG and not animated.

I'm tired of CG animation that's been coming out of the woodworks lately. Frankly, CG is not needed to make a really original and nice-looking movie, in fact nowadays it just demonstrates laziness and an urge to follow the fad to me. So I am very happy that Dragonlance is going to be a true drawn animation, not more CG crap.

Well, Ghost in the shells good it has a very nice mix of animation and CG - Though it did go a bit over the top on the second movie, not mentioning the bland characters and randomly forced in university student style philisophical debates which where entirley out of character. But the series used CG well.

Not mentioning trailers / cutscenes like Mark of Chaos , age of reckoning, world in conflict and even warcraft 3 where very well done - though expensive, just a shame people haven't decided to do a good movie in that style.

Its just a natural progression of the industry. There are some things that are simply too hard or expensive to do, and/or just don't look right when done with real people and traditional film. Even a lot of the movies that have a lot of fantasy/sci-fi stuff with real actors has a very big portion of it done with computers anyway.
The industry and technology have just got to the point where they can get some pretty good looking stuff out of CG that doesn't take too long and at a reasonable cost.

The problem with traditional animation is that it takes so many people so long to make the stories that it simply isn't practical anymore. It used to be because that was the only choice people had, they would hire 100 artists to sit in cubicles and draw endlessly for 3-4 years to get a movie. There also aren't nearly as many free artists just waiting to draw the same thing over and over with minor changes, there are still about the same number of artists, but instead of focusing on just drawing the majority are focusing on computer graphics instead and their use in other industries (such as any one with a presense on the internet...) means the cost of the artists and the lack of availablity of lots of them to do traditional animation means that traditional animation is quickly loosing its place.

There is still some place for the traditional sorts of animation, such as normal drawing animation and stop-motion/clay animation (such as Wallace and Gromet, not sure on spelling) but its very much a niche thing and not something that is ever going to come back with any regularity.


It simply doesn't make any sense to hire that many people to do traditional animation when the same thing can be done with a fraction of the people and in half the time using computer graphics. What you can have an issue with though is the style of the CG. They could make CG look a lot like normal animation if they wanted to, they could give it the same drawn look and simplistic and non-realistic feel if they wanted to. The style and feel of animated films doesn't really have to change moving from traditional animation to CG, but it has a high tendancy to.
Its not the technology the movies are made with that is having an impact on the quality or enjoyment of the movies, its the people financing and making the movies that is doing it.

I'm sad about this movie. The voice-cast is about as good as you could hope to get. It's very solid and appropriate.

Yet every picture I've seen from it is GODAWFUL. Not just "mediocre" like some stuff, but really, truly, awful. I mean, it's one thing to use CGI, you can make a movie look ok with CGI. It's another thing entirely to use terrible CGI. Jeez, I mean look at those bizarre deformed identical-clone Draconians. It's cheap and unpolished work done by people who don't care, or looks that way.

Erloas - That's questionable. In the East there's a limitless supply of cheap, talented artists who work in the traditional animation style (or a computer-assisted version thereof). Using CGI and thus employing Western artists is cool for the economy and all, but ultimately, to make a POLISHED CGI movie, you need to spend at least much time as with computer-assisted traditional animation, and probably more money.

That the industry in the West is moving towards CGI more is indisputable, though, I agree. The talent just isn't there to back it up, though.

This movie is mixing the two, though, which I suspect is going to end in even bigger tears than sticking with one or the other.
