As I see this discussed inside and out, I realize players will simply not be able to resist popping a squat and reading up on their ToK.

In the meantime, their enemy barshes them in the head.

"Damn," the Greenskin thinks, "knew reading my ToK on keep duty was a bad idea." :D

Perhaps they can have a 'ToK' graphic -- toon stops and unfurls a scroll, or flips through a small journal.

I dislike the 'AFK' title, and would prefer graphical versions instead (ie AFK = a snoozing toon. ToK = a Toon reading a book/scroll/etc.)

I actually would like to see a decreased damage avoidance/mitigation while your ToK is open -- basically reflecting the loss caused by the distraction of reading.

That might help reduce the amount of ToK reading during combat.

The only issue with that, is the times when you're trying to avoid being whispered, but are still playing. Hence why it was handy to have a little title in WoW. It wouldn't impede your playing, but it'd trick people into thinking you were indeed AFK, and so on.

While I do agree that a graphic would be much nicer, I'd hope that the graphic would only turn on while you're not moving, or something.

Besides, it'd be cool to see someone be running around, and have to check their map, so they stop, and you see them pull out their tome for a minute, close it, and dash off. It'd be a little more interesting than just seeing them magically always know where to go, because you can't tell when they have their map up at all.

All I know is, I won't be able to not read the ToK. Too many lore goodies for me not to. >.<;

I would rather have a tool to block or filter whispers.

I agree that the animation should stop if you move or are moving.

Heh, if there was a ToK animation (sitting down and opening your ToK to read), I can already invision many amusing sights. People going to pubs or libraries to read, people all sitting around a green in town reading to themselves, people on the ramparts of keeps, reading.

"WAR is Everywhere!"

"Shhh, we're trying to concentrate."

"Alright lads, we're taking the fort, their defenses are weakened! CHARGE!!!"

"Take that orc! And that! And...oh man there might be something new in my ToK, I'm gonna stop fighting and read it, it might not be there later"

Where I could see NOT getting an AFK message for reading your ToK being bad would be in the instanced RvR areas. People could exploit this to go AFK in the instances and would just be able to use the, I wasnt AFK I was reading my ToK, excuse.

Maybe make the ToK have some transparency so you can still see if an enemy attacks you or better yet, make it so the ToK can only be used out of combat so that if you are attacked, it automatically gets put away.

I could imagine an ironbreaker stood blocking a pass reading his ToK whille a couple of runepriests heal him constantly and a bunch of Orcs getting really annoyed while he's just sat there reading.

It isn't hard to read a map, or look at your quest journal while running/fighting. The ToK will be no different. There is this thing called multitasking ... the fact is, some people can do it and others can't. Looking at your ToK in combat is more glancing, not in-depth reading time. Actual reading of the ToK ... that is for out of combat time, or hanging in the pub.

As for a ToK animation, I would agree with that as long as it did not disrupt combat animations or anything. Or maybe the ToK will be locked out if in combat? I could see that working, though, like I said, sometimes I would want to glance at it in combat, especially if I was in the middle of a ToK quest or unlock.

Just my 2 cents.

I cant see them making an animation for having your tome open, it would look crap to see lots of orcs running around then all stopping and pulling out books.

A little animation for it would be neat. I'm looking forward to seeing what type of content is in there, what the design is like, etc.

QFT, I know I read a fair share of stuff I shouldn't be whilst on duty. Well, now that I think about it, lots of my co-workers do. Salary is a funny thing...

If they do do a toon animation for a ToK read, Orcs should have the book upside down, or better yet, read the book with it open vertically rather than left to right.:)

The animation could also reflect the race reading it:

Dwarven ToK could be a thick, ancient looking tome with runes on it,
Empire's book could have Sigmarite hammers and such on the cover,
Chaos one would look nice with a Tzeenchian eye moving on the cover,
Greenskin "book" could be carefully put together with rusty nails,
Dark Elven tome would have spiky metal parts all around with sharp edges as they seem to like things like that and so on.

Some small things to add originality. :)

I don't know if an animation for the ToK is such a great idea.
As i understood it the quest log will be in the ToK. I tend to look alot into the quest log while im questing and I don't won't to look like a tourist in a new town looking at his map every 5 seconds.

I kinda thought the animation should be them trying to read it with their head cocked to the side and a confused look on their face.

A ToK animation would be pretty cool, but if they did it, it would have to switch off during combat, and maybe if people want they could turn that particular animation off.

I really like the idea of a map-reading animation. I can just imagine people running around, stopping to pull out a map while they look around, then darting off again. It'd be a nice little extra touch.

* Orc Choppa's running down a path, suddenly stops, looks around, scratches his head, and pulls out what looks like a sheet of squig paper, before pointing in one direction, then sprinting off * i would laugh so hard if that was in, but sadly it won't be. :(

i think the tome as a new form reason for being afk is good. that meansits so full of good stuff from the devs thatpeople cant not read it.

plus, the way they are hinting about the unlocks it may be very important to read all the information as it could or will give you clues on how to open a lair, give locations of secret things and the like.

i cant wait!

Ok, I read about 1.5 pages of this thread and fell in love with the ToK animation idea! It's magnificent how much 'feel' it would add to the game and on the other hand it shouldn't be too hard to implement.

The idea of seeing people read a book in-game in pubs, under trees, just random spots while sitting on the ground or in a battlefield - checking out your new awesome title (a guy suddenly stops in the middle of a map) and getting torn into pieces...just plain fun and capable of bringing a smile to one's face.

The animation should still be there while running though, just a bit modified. While you run, for an example your characters head checks where he's going every once in a while when reading their ToK etc. (hah, a clip just ran through my head with some high tier guy on an awesome mount, reading his ToK while running fullspeed and crashing into a tree).

Dwarfs - Their book of grudges, rune covered of course.
Empire - Their holy books, warpriests taking the book from their side that they always carry with them
Chaos-The book's cover would be made from flesh, with the eye thing maybe.
Greenskin-Pieces of scrap together with the orc scratching its head.
Dark Elf - An simple black book, with a blood red book marker ribbon thing.
High Elf - A goldenbook, with gold edges, and intricate cover

Quoted for awesomeness XD Or Perhaps the ToK unlock could read, "So-in-so was so engrossed in the story, he couldn't put his book down. Even when hordes of destruction raced towards him, all he could mutter was, "Not my job.""

Possible tittles - Asleep on the job, Bookworm, Unflinching

I actually would like to see a decreased damage avoidance/mitigation while your ToK is open -- basically reflecting the loss caused by the distraction of reading.

That might help reduce the amount of ToK reading during combat.

Reading your ToK for 5 minutes gives you a 5 minute buff that increases intelligence. As for the cool ideas we need something cooler like a sound emote that yells when you open it. I haven't followed much on order but for Destruction (And some order)

Chaos: Blood for the Blood God (In a creepy voice)
Dark Elf: A blood curdling yell
Greenskins: Paul Barnett yelling Waaagh!

I'd roll a green skin if they did that
