View Full Version : Punk or Metal???

Yes i dare to ask the dreaded question!!

We all know that WAR is the Led Zeppelin of MMOs.
And Mythic went on great lengths to give that gothic and heavy metal look to the Destruction careers! Just look at the Chaos and Dark Elves.

But now, Destro will never more have the nerve of saying that they are cooler than Order! The reason why?

We just got Punk reinforcement!!! The Slayers would have been the career of choice of Sid Vicious, Joe Strummer and the Ramones if they ever played an MMO!
So what do you guys prefer?
The heavy metal looks of Destro or the Punk awesomness of the Slayers??

I see Slayers being Punk and Metal, they are just that cool. Course same goes for a psycho wielding choppa orc.

Slayer's both. Definitely. I'm thinking the primary ingredients would be GBH, Motorhead, and Slayer (of course).

Choppa's gotta be all punk. We're talkin 80's hardcore stuff here. Smash everything and then smash it again just to make sure it's good and smashed. Maybe throw some ska in for good measure (sort of like smashing with a smile) Pop punk is for elves.

In retrospect I'm pretty sure Siouxsie (http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g309/smashthecontrolmachine/siouxsie.jpg) would be a witch elf...

Slayer = Extreme Thrash metal band
Slayers = Extreme Thrashing dwarves

Slayers were based on English Punks and Crusties - the kind tht followed 80's punk bands, and other hard no nonsense bands like New model Army and early Killing Joke and followed on with Heavy Industrial such as Ministry.

Thats the kind of stuff most of the coloured Mohawks I know are or were listening to.

I'd say they look more like true goths, with the facial paintings and the deathhawk and all.

Just take away the beard and you got yourself an oldschool goth.

True Goth (or Trad Goth) is more black clad Vampire than Slayer.
But the industrial/Cloggy side of it with Bands like NMA and Ministry were defiantely Red mohawk Proto Slayers indeed (I know I was one of em...)

And the kind of Punk Slayers are is the hardcore GBH, Exploited Dead Kennedies type of punk not the pre packaged teen angst rebellion of Rage against the Machine, Green Day and Offspring.

Remember the Bolt Thrower flexi disk that came with a copy of White Dwarf one time?
Good old Slayer music...

Well, hehe, i don't wanna make a true comparison of musical tastes of people... :P
I love both metal and punk bands.
Its more about the punk looks of the Slayer compared with the metal look of Destro (ya know, the way the Chaos and Dark Elves look).

The Slayer seems based more on the punk subculture in the UK.
It's funny we will be playing punk (Slayers) against soccer hooligans (Orcs). haha

"Thats the beauty of posion"

Saw them at Whitby Halloween last year - excellent live show.
Liked em from when i first heard em in the mid 80's (sadly got into Goth too late to see them live then)
Them Sex gang Children and Alien Sex Fiend from the Bat Cave scene.
Though I see them more Zealot*/Dark Elf than Slayer, but not far off for Slayers though.

(* For Zealot fans though - try Sopor Aeternus. The guy even looks like a Zealot!)

i like metal as much as the next guy (amon amarth) but you ers have some whiney bands as well (Metallica can't go an entire interview without being little es). Real true punks are not whiney, but more pissy then anything. Plus they got the comradery thing going.

But see, I know true blue original rock steady oi! skinheads that could beat the out of most MMA fighters so....

SID VICIOUS for one, he was a junkie and a moron. Jello Biafra is punk, Strummer was punk, Dicky Barret? punk as Ian Mckaye? hell yah poison free punk.

Well, in all fairness i only said one band and two punk artists from the begining of the punk revolution.
If you want punk bands i can site you some more:
Dead Kennedys, Parkinsons (defunct portuguese punk band that rocked London), The Clash, Sex Pistol, Rancid,

I know my dwarf slayer will be listening to PUNK music when he goes around looking for his doom. I am going to be torn as who to play, my marauder or my slayer. And if they add skaven and lizardmen I am even more screwed!

Before we start talking metal or punk though, we need to define punk or metal. Are we talking punk for the late 70s when it was highly political and anti-establishment, 80s punk which started to turn into thrash, we talking British OI, 90s alienation and toning the world out or pop punk of the late 90s 2000s? And personally I don't even want to talk about rap punk. Or we talking the underground stuff which will always be good but no one outside a small group knows of. Personally, I think late 70s early 80s and of course some Iggie and the Stooges, Dillinger Four, Clash, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Dead Kennedies, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphy, Bad Religion, Descendents, the first two records of Screeching Weasel. Ok, I could go on.

As for metal, how far back we going? Back to Led Zepplin or Ozzie? We going Death Metal, thrash metal? Just some questions we need to answer before our angry little dwarf starks to jump around with his doc marten books and doing some stompin!

Slayers are definately Pre-Metal Hard Rock and Punk. Bon Scott AC/DC, a dash of Led Zeppelin, Motorhead, The Stooges, Black Flag, Bad Brains, the Sex Pistols, and ed Up (if you havn't heard them, go on youtube and find them, they are spectacularly good).

The whole point behind Slayers is that they have no self pity, they're too macho. They'd rather go fight and die than feel sorry for themselves about what happened to them. Which means they could never be metal. Metal is self indulgent white guys screaming incoherent lyrics about death and the travesties that as middle class white guys they have to deal with. Punk, on the other hand, is about fighting the man and the corruption and that governments live off of and perpetrate. Much more macho.

Exactly, punks are self-destructive and don't give a about others. Metal is too lyric and egotistic. I also love metal though. However i feel the punk attitude to be more Slayerish but i guess it all depends.

HAHAHAHA no. MMA fighters are some of the nastiest on the planet, and I could guarantee one hit would knock out ANY person who isn't a professional fighter as well. Oh, and hyped up on drugs doesn't count as being crazy.

Slayers are punk, 80s punk.

Choppas are thrash metal. Just go f*ing nuts!

Also, there's a reason Punk as we know it is dead, no new true punk bands coming out.

Metal is still going strong, I think Jack Black said it best :D

You can have your metal. Let me know when you get tired of crying in a corner about how much angst you have in the world and you're ready to actually go fight something ;)

I guess the only thing to do is to solve the Metal Vs. Punk debate in a Choppa Vs. Slayer smackdown.
