ok so I watched the Shadow warrior podcast and they said you can chose to make your bow more powerful or your close combat so will that mean that say a caster or pure ranged dps will have more range dps than a shadow warrior?

Your bow is always going to be a part of you no matter what really. Your choice is how yo use it. You can choose to focus in your bow skills and be capable of killing enemies from afar but be lacking when they get into melee range. If you choose to focus more into melee then you'll be able to use your bow well enough to wear the enemy down a bit before they get to you and then finish them off with melee.

ya i am going to want to focus on my bow so will i still be a solid range dps or still a hybrid that lacks ranged dps?

If you focus on your bow then you will be a pure ranged damage dealer, but you will probably be very weak in melee. If you focus more on melee then you will probably have more survivability but you will lack some of the damage dealing capability going purely ranged would have given you. Just as Dastion said.
You will be able to choose how much you want to focus on either, so its up to you and how you want to play your character.

The devs have stated that you, if you choose to, will have more then enough mastery points to go over into a second branch before you hit max. So with that said you can be a very good ranged dmg dealer, but still be able to survive to an extent with melee.

Remember that this is will be a game that focuses on large scale PvP. So you will probably want some survivability as well, not just high sustained ranged damage (that sounds like something you'd want in PvE raids).
People wont notice if f.ex. Shadow Warriors have 10% less ranged DPS (sustained damage per second) than say, Sorcerers. Because in PvP (what this game mainly will be competitive about) there it doesn't really matter. Controlled burst damage, survivability, utility, speed, etc. things like that matter in PvP.

Totally agree. This is why I was very disapointed to find out that there will be "damage-meters" in the scenarios at least. Maybe this will make people go all out for dps, and no survivability/utility, because they want to see their name on top of that list as much as possible. But who am I to tell people how to play heh

You're a ranged DPS archtype.... thinka bout it, you're all bow with the ability to stab people but do little dmg with melee

I know im close minded, but to me better melee abilties doesn't mean better survivablity. Keep in mind its a ranged archetype, the main function of "better melee" will probably be a few kiting abilities (think wing clip for hunters in WoW), and enough melee DPS to knock off the last 10% of your targets health, I really dont see them making improved melee anything other than that for a class that's supposed to function as ranged DPS.
Survivability to me means you have better ways to defend against melee attacks and such, not do more melee damage. While kiting is one way to defend against such things, I highly doubt they will be limited to just the "melee " spec.
Keep in mind I dont necessarily think that i'll be spending everything in ranged spec. I'm going to explore the other trees as much as I can until i find a build that fits what I want to have a know i'll use most, but im still sticking to my glass cannon tactics :P

Being better at melee combat also includes things like special abilites, like some form of hamstring. It may also allow you to parry more attacks. Just speculations.
One thing to keep in mind is that in PvP your no use dead.
Also if you want to go all out dps, then by all means do so.

well they said they wont include stat bonus' beyond temporary buffs, so I doubt they'd have something like a mastery that allowed you to do so (again thats just my speculation). I hope they stick to something like "glass cannon" with the class because in my own experiences, giving a DPS class survivability was something that ended up getting exploited and then they would just start a nerf fight to try and resolve the issue.:(
and just as an example i'll use the rogue from WoW, because lets face it, who doesn't know about em? :P. They have a balance issue of having a high dodge rating compared to most classes (or have access to it) and they also have access to gear with very high stamina, which can create a series of rogues that are nearly impossible to hit most of the time and have a ton of HP.
I consider the fact that DPS classes are supposed to be squishy, especially ranged DPSers, because this is a natural balance mechanic. So when the ranged DPS catches a melee at distance they win, but if that melee closes the gap, you lose, its a natural point of balance. (again, speculation and opinion here) if you give a ranged DPS a way to survive in a situation where they should lose (melee closing the gap to you and tearing your face off) then balance has now become an issue for that fight.
I know theres no such thing as perfect balance, and yes survivability is nice, but i'd rather have the game be well balanced then satisfy my own urges to not die :P
