View Full Version : Slayer Tattoo system feedback

This is a theory post of mine as well as a request for Mythic to re-examine the tattoo mechanic for Slayers.
First off, Mythic, PLEASE DO NOT GIVE STATS TO TATTOOS.
My reasoning is thus, if tattoos gain stats and are treated as items, then at endgame most Slayers will look identical. They will be wearing the best gear they can acquire, which will lead to many players having similar weapons and armor, as well as having the same "best" tattoos.
Tattoos should be a personal and purely cosmetic choice with NO impact on gameplay. Please do not convert tattoos into just another item.
Instead, the basic tattoo should be selected at character creation, and the Slayer should have the option to upgrade the tattoo every 10 ranks at a "Tattoo Artist" npc. Depending on your rank, the Tattoo Artist will be able to add on to existing tattoos either via a template, or by choosing separate tattoos for the head, back, wrists, shoulders and torso.
This way a player can either have a unified look via the template, or a crazy mishmash of different designs on each area, depending on your individual preference. The higher your rank, the more designs you can use, with new ones becoming available every 5 or 10 ranks. Players would also be able to choose colors for the tattoos, within a reasonable color palette.
This system shouldn't be too hard to implement via a modification of the current "dye" interface, and Tattoo Artist npcs can be added to major settlements and capital cities without too much trouble.
If you want to add rare tattoo designs that are dropped by monsters, that's fine. Treat them the same way as dropped dyes, but don't give them any stat values. The coolness factor of having a rare design should be enough.
Thanks for reading this, and I hope Mythic gives my suggestions some thought.

I can't see Mythic putting in a separate system like this purely for slayers. We might be able to see something like this if they ever put a barber NPC in game, but not before.

Missing the point.
Faling to watch the pod-cast.
Dev team said Tattoos are dyed.
How are slayers looking unique a higher priority than all classes looking unique?
If other classes look the same (dyeing being the only way to change that) then why should slayers be special? because they have tattoos?
The tats are just there instead of armor.

I did watch the podcast, the tattoos were named as a customization option along with regular items. It was unclear whether they were going to be assigned stats.
I'm saying they should NOT be itemized, or assigned stats like regular items. They should be cosmetic only. I also read the dev chat overview.
Missing the point again. I'm trying to suggest that Mythic re-examine the tattoo system and not turn them into regular items/gear that confers stats.

Ok, fair enough but then how will stats be granted to Slayers? The game mechanics implies that you gain stats by equipping items and Slayer would miss minimum 3 pieces: Chestpiece, Headpiece, and Shoulderpads. Tattoos are the most logic way to have an "Equippable" thing that can be granted with stats. Just don't consider them tatoos but "War Paintings" that can be changer.

No they wont.
Chestpiece - Pants will do for this part.
Seeing as pants are always part of the "chest" anyway.
Headpiece - Eyepatches, noserings and various nose/ear chains.
Shoulders - Armbands, in forms of chains or torcs

What he said, I got the impression tattoos were purely cosmetical. Especially considering its not chest piece its body piece, so as long as they have the pants part its fine.

Sounds as a fair idea then :)

Tatoos might change together with pants. Or become a shoulder item. I remember when people were advertising for slayers stated that Tatoos can counted for armor and now they don't want to see that. :confused:

There is no real reason for tattoos not giving stats. Every single character get their items and looks the same as others except dyes, Slayers shouldn't get special threatment here.

Yeah as far as I have heard they are just in at the moment with no mention of cosmetic, "armour" or whatever.
However looking at the slayer model pic with all the jewellery options they have on it maybe tattoos will be simply cosmetic.
Cant really complain about tatts being armour nor about the individuality of them. WE get light armour knickers lol
So far the only customizable option is dying, as the rest of it is.. well to say the least a non starter. wheres the chain of goblin ears or a goblins head i can put onto a shoulder piece. it hasnt happened and doesnt look too likely.
Making your character individual isnt really cutting it yet to be polite.

I can't speak for everyone, of course, but I never wanted tattoos to have stats personally. And as far as item slots go based on the art and the available info I think we can expect something like:
Chest = Leggings
Head = Necklace/Gorget or Torque, worn around the neck like a WP helm
Shoulder = braces/chains worn around the upper arm between deltoid and bicep
Belt = Belt
Gloves = Bracers/Gloves
Feet = Feet
Back =? I'm unsure, they may implement cloaks as normal, but just have the graphic turned off by default.

I been thinking about both sides and I have to give tatoo as body armor the thumbs up. Yes pants were the obvious choice for the body slot, but dwarfs have short legs, even for something their height. At higher tiers it's mostly covered by the belt and boots.
Prehaps we end up looking like the other high level slayers, but that's the risk all people run into. No reason why we would be different. And as said we always have dye.
I rather have the tatoos and really see the difference from one item to the next. Plus while your idea is nice in theory it's overly complex and more then they can afford to give one class for looks alone.
So the real question is would you rather have a single static tatoo from rank 1-40 or would you like one that grows with you?
