I've always been partial to DOTs, and healing. Throw in some melee on the side and this class is what I'll be playing come release. Really glad they added this combination of mechanics together as I really haven't seen them paired this way before; although I'm sure someone could point out a prior mmo or rpg that uses a similar skill set.

Now I just pray they don't screw it up by making his melee suck, his heals suck and his dots suck to compensate for the fact that he can do all three.

Well Melee -> Healing so its healing on the side :)

Do I have to go over the Archtype podcast yet again?

Support classes don't get "great melee"

Since they have the ability to heal and are in decent armor their offense is their weakness.

My main in WoW was a shadow priest. I had dots, shields, buffs and heals. I love life-steal mechanics as well and melee is more my style. Its almost as if the Disciple was made for my playstyle :) I also really like vampires (Dark elves aren't vampires but they drink blood, are immortal, pale skin, and are very strong).

Only the deciple and few exceptions in Dark Elf society drink blood... they also arn't immortal, and I assure you the Deciple isn't back by the lore

Actually, the Witch Elves drink blood and from all appearances quite regularly.
Before battle, the Brides of Khaine drink blood laced with drugs which fills the with bloodlust and rage.
“Know this then before you die. Your body will serve to pleasure me long after your soul fades. I will drink from your wounds and when my thirst is quenched I will bathe in your blood. Only when your body grows cold will I throw the empty husk of your mortal shell for the beasts to rip asunder.”
There’s more references in the older army book (which I don’t have access to here) about Witch Elves drinking blood and eating hearts and such. And note that the Witch Elf miniature (http://www.coolminiornot.net/53734) with the Cauldron of Blood is holding a cup of blood. So it’s very clear that the Witch Elves definitely drink blood.

There aren’t any references that I’m aware of, including within the temple of Khaine, of other dark elves drinking blood. So in that sense I agree.

I always imagined Witch Elves to religiously fast themselves, eating naught but flesh and drinking naught but blood to compell them to murder and sacrifice more often. Any additional food and drink could be seen as excessive luxuries for which Brides of Khaine should have no need. Makes them seem a lot fiercer and makes life within the Temple seem that much more demanding, as it should be.

It's one of those lore-additions which could be used because there's no evidence proving otherwise, just as there's no evidence that they don't sterilize themselves during initiation, sacrificing their ability to bare children when marrying themselves to Murder, which is why I also usually implement that into my Witch Elf characters during a roleplay. Gives another dimension to their reasoning behind stealing babies for the Cauldron ritual too. :D

Ooh, neat idea. Hoe you don't mind me stealing that. ;)

Not on a permanent basis of course (I doubt that you could survive off of blood and flesh), but it'd work very well for the eve of battle and during certain religious periods (like after Death Night).

The way I see it is that the rituals where they (finally) marry to Khaine could involve self-mutilation which disables them from bearing children. Just imagine sticking a knife there. <shudders>

On a side-note, I always got the impression that it's only Assassins who come from the Cauldron of Blood; Witch Elves I always thought to be young female children (instead of babies) enrolled in the temple, though I guess it could be that instead of being voluntary they might be kidnapped on Death Night instead (where the Witches select only the most beautiful ones as described by the older army book). Would be interesting to play a young Witch Elf wannabe anxiously hoping on Death Night that they'll come steal her away (and ready to face being killed if she's found wanting). Mostly because I don't like it if Assassins and Witch Elves have the exact same origin as it shows unoriginality.

Anyway, neat ideas. :)

On a side-note; Mengil Manhide's Manflayers eat flesh and drink blood as well. Though I agree its probably not something commonly done by common Dark Elves, it probably isn't something very exceptional either.:p

Ooh, that gave me some pretty cool (aka messed up) ideas for how the ritual of marriage to Khaine would be performed. Which are definetively not postable on these forums :D

Ah yes, forgot about the Manflayers.

And now that we're talking about it, in the Darkblade novels the Shades are said (or heavily hinted at least) to eat the flesh of other druchii. And the same also suggests that other druchii would have no problem eating the flesh of non-druchii races (as they're just animals anyway). Though that's probably still a few steps away from drinking blood.

We're probably thinking fairly alike there. ;)

Just imagine sticking a knife there. <shudders> ...well, yes, of course. I imagine there's also a certain type of poison they have to drink too. But, yes, that is why my Witch Elf characters often wear loin-cloths of a specific shade of crimson. To commemorate a certain moment in their life with one of the many hues of blood one can dress in. ;)

What you mean is he should be good at everything? I don't think you will be seing him doing any real damage in melee tbh. I hope not atleast.

I think the 4th/5th Edition Army Book and the 6th Edition Army Book both suggest that the Witch Elves are selected for their merits. Their cruelty and beauty being most important. Khaine will only take the finest brides so it makes sense that they have lived a while before they are selected to enter the Temple and devote themselves to Khaine through the sacred marriage pact.

I discussed this in an older thread somewhere, but the Cauldron/Assassin story doesn't exist in the 4th/5th Edition. Instead it says that the Witch Elves kidnap male children that they will raise as Assassins during Death Night.

In the 6th Edition it transforms into the story of the Cauldron and the idea that the Witch Elves throw any infants they find into the Cauldron and any that survive are considered marked by Khaine and are raised as Assassins. There actually isn't any mention of gender in the 6th Edition story. I think the door is open for female Assassins, at least in the 6th.

I do think one of the older WFRP resources talks about the Cauldron being used and male survivors becoming Assassins and female survivors becoming Witch Elves. I'm pretty sure I've seen that version somewhere, but I'm not absolutely confident. I agree with you though in that I think it's less interesting to have both Assassins and Witch Elves come from the Cauldron. I think it makes more sense for the Witch Elves to prove their faith and devotion to Khaine through their lives and be married to him at a suitable age through a particularly bloody-rite.

I'm also a big fan of the Cauldron representing a sacred womb. The children Khaine marks and spares during Death Night are the children of Khaine and his Brides. The Maibd have sworn themselves solely to Khaine and he gifts his Brides by allowing them to give birth to his children through the Cauldron as a surrogate womb.

But then it also opens up disturbing thoughts of what those ancient Hag Queens bathing in that same surrogate womb could symbolise.

Ew.

Indeed. As the 4th edition book puts it: "Only the strongest and most graceful are chosen to honour Khaine in this way"

Oh, from the same page regarding the drinking of blood (on Death night): "Amids great revelry the Witch Elves feast upon raw flesh and drink blood mixed with wine. After many hours, intoxicated and exhausted by the dance they fall into a stupefied sleep and do not awake for many days."

Dance? Hmmmm... <considers re-opening /dance emote in WAR topics> :p

Anyway, back to the chosen vs cauldron-born; 6th edition is less clear on the subject, though I guess that "the chosen brides of Khaine" could be that, or could be that this refers to them being Khaine's chosen ones (as it notes a little further down).

In the 6th Edition it transforms into the story of the Cauldron and the idea that the Witch Elves throw any infants they find into the Cauldron and any that survive are considered marked by Khaine and are raised as Assassins. To be honest I never quite understood why Assassin would be male-only as that doesn't really make a lot of sense of Assassins (though yes, I've heard that they reflect some male aspect of Khaine). I feel that female Assassins should be possible.

I do think one of the older WFRP resources talks about the Cauldron being used and male survivors becoming Assassins and female survivors becoming Witch Elves. I'm pretty sure I've seen that version somewhere, but I'm not absolutely confident.
I've never seen any official Warhammer Roleplaying source mention Witch Elves. Thoguh I've only ever seen the main book (my copy seems to be from 1986) and am not aware of any supplements going more into dark elves. Would be something I'd be interested in seeing though; I remember making rules for dark elf careers myself back in the day. :p

Interesting thought; never thought of it like that. interesting reveral of the usual gender roles too; it's the male giving birth (Khaine through the Cauldrons), having a score of women to help, uh, fertilize (pouring blood into the Cauldron and all). Though maybe that's over-thinking things. :p

On a side-note, anyone notice how one of the more interesting discussions on Witch Elves seems to be a wholly off-topic discussion in a thread in the Disciple forum? Oh the irony.

Well Melee -> Healing so its healing on the side :)

I was under the impression that they melee so they can heal better, not melee with healing as a side effect. Unless of course you're making a direct observation from the beta your bio line states you are in and which we know is/was running the Dark Elves recently. In which case that's rather dangerously close to a breach if not outright one.

Honestly I was just wondering why you take the time to type - Xurré everytime you post when it shows who you are when you post, and there is also a section for a signature, doesn't make sense to me.

I forget what thread it was, but Baron posted in a thread about how the Shaman healing worked (he'd played one at a release). It was that his heals would take 4-5 seconds and not heal so much. So he decided to stop healing and start damaging....lo and behold, his heals start glowing green with Waaaagh! So he tries a heal...and it casts in about 1-1.5 seconds! He ended up estimating that he was damaging about 80% of the time and healing about 20% of the time when he had his Waaaagh! built up.

Anyway, if you want his actual post, I can't remember what thread it was.

The Disciple skill setup caught my attention as well. Hopefully there's a good balance between all of the Disciple abilities.
