View Full Version : Hair: Black or White?

The old dark elf army book has the following description of Witch Elves (underscoring mine):
Only the strongest and most graceful are chosen to honour Khaine in this way. Their cadaverous beauty is legendary even among the fair Elves of Ulthuan. Their unblemished skin is pale as milk and their hair is white like ice. Their disdainful eyes are pale and their full, red mouths are quick to laugh and another’s pain.
However, in the current army book, as well as in the WAR concept art, Witch Elves have black hair.
Now, it can be assumed that during character customization EA Mythic will allow one to modify the colour of your character’s hair. So the question is, what hair colours should EA Mythic allow for Witch Elf characters? Here I’m assuming that whatever colours they do allow they’ll always come in several shades (several shades of black, several shades of white, etc).
Personally I think the black looks quite nice, but I’ve always loved the white hair of the older Witch Elves. Just seems to give them something alien to have such pale skin and white hair; the black hair tends to like more natural. Besides, blood stains aren’t nearly as visible on black hair as they are on white. ;)
So I’m hoping personally that they’ll allow white hair for our Witch Elves. Xurré has always had white hair; would be odd to change that to black.
What do you think?
[EDIT] I’ve been thinking for a bit whether I’d want Mythic to include various other colours (blonde, brown, red, etc) as well, but I kinda like the Witch Elves being fairly black-and-white with the only colour to them coming from the blood splattered across them. As such I think their hair colours should probably be limited to only the extremes; black and white (both in a couple of shades of course). Though I’m not terribly fussed if more hair colours are included; it’d just look odd.

Though the typical hair color for witch elfs is either black or white, it would be nice to have other options, if we can dye the armor, why not the hair?

Im dissappointed I havnt seen more witch elf art with white hair. All have been black haired which kind of made my picture of a witch elf as black haired when I imagine them in my mind. White haired does in truth sound interesting as that alien look your describing appeals to me. Also I like to add that I like the option of only black and white haired toons. If it aint broken dont fix it.

Sure you won't post a 5 page wall of text if they get the option of other colours? :)

I hope my Black Guard can have white hair, and I also hope the helmet will have an exit at the back where the hair can stick out. ;)

Although most Dark Elves hail from ancient Nagarythe, and thus have black hair, I see no reason why different hair colours should be disallowed. In fact many Dark Elves hail from other ancient kingdoms, so there should be different hair colours.

My image of the Witch Elves was since the beginning, that they have raven black hair,
when they are young and new to the Temple, they skin pale white with a lite grey.
During the ritual, which makes them to a Priestess, their hair colour changes from black
to white.
Sure, there could be more colours for the Dark Elves, but most are black or dark
brown, maybe grey with a lot of differences and only a few are white at birth.

The question is, I think, whether elves would generally be inclined to dye their hair. <has flashbacks of an old friend who used to play a blue-haired wood elf>

The old armybook cover (http://www.eilistraee.com/a/darkelvesarmybook.jpg) shows a Witch Elf with white hair. Also shows another contrast I find interesting: the Sorceress has black hair. So one way to distinguish Sorceresses from Witch Elves is by whether they had black hair or white. ;)
Note, I'm mainly talking colour-contrast here; the style of these elves is perhaps a bit too human.

That depends; I could probably write a page or so for each additional color they include, so it depends on how many of those they add. ;)
I hope my Black Guard...
Ok, who let the Black Guard in the temple? :p

That's fair enough. However if you're going to allow different hair colours then you have to expect people using them, probably roughly as often as black (or white). And I think it'd look outright weird to have Witch Elves running around with hair in every natural (and possibly unnatural) colour.
Then again maybe I'm just too used to seeing units of all roughly the same style and colour.

I can see some blood red hair color on them without feeling awkward. Who knows if it's just a dye of interesting origins? ;)

I liked the colour scheme on the blonde Witch Elf Hag miniature on the back cover page of the 6th Ed. army book.
I'm counting on silvery-blonde (cold hues), silver and white hair options for all Dark Elf classes.

I think alot of dnd lovers will want white hair as they are used to dark elves (drow).
I love dnd but would like to see a distinct different look because warhammer elves are alot different, but thats just my oppinion.

Who about pink, for that anime feel?

Pretty much with Xurre on this one. Witch Elves work best in monochrome, though I have little preference between white/black. And deep, blood red, as stated, could also work, though Jane Goldman (http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/9393/vpjgoldman187xp.jpg) levels of red would likely be a bit much.

I'm not sure which miniature you're talking about. The one Hag one the back cover (riding a dark pegasus; might be a Sorceress) actually has black hair. She just also wears a funky headdress with horns and swirly spiky bits.

Drow also have obsidian black skin; I'm sure that'll be more than plenty different enough visually speaking. If anything black hair (with the druchii pale white skin) makes them way too obviously the negative image of drow.

Uh...my memory recalls a blonde Witch Elf Hag miniature in black and red (the Hag mini holding up a chalice full of blood) with very pale skin. She's on the very last page. As in the inside of the back of the book's cover. Possibly somewhere near the bottom.

was that even necessary? off-topic and inflammatory imho.....
but, if they do allow blonde, hopefully it will be a very light light blonde, making it really just a shade of white (yellow tinted)
Hopefully though, they have some really killer mixes of pure black and white. Maybe stripes and stuff (seriously) to allow some of us to make some truly psychotic looking witches :p
Is this the mini (or a varitation) you are talking about estebar (pic doesn't allow good visual of hair color just helm and the stance you mentioned)

Ah yes, I see. On the inside back cover at the top. Never noticed that she actually had someone yellow-ish hair. And looking at it closely, while the rest of the miniature looks quite nice, that hair just looks... odd. Looks more like someone skinned a lion and put the manes on the headpiece so cover her bald head. :p
<thinks I might've opened another can of worms there>

White is definitely one of my favourite hair colours.

The paler the skin the darker the hair in my opinion.
Not sure why it's always been like that to me, but super pale just doesn't look good with white or blond. Strawberry blond might fit, but that's stretching it.
Really, I'm pretty indifferent. More colors is good, just leave out like blue and green yeah?

I have a hard time picturing a Witch Elf with white hair, but I bet it looks cool so I voted for white and black.

Variety of customization is always a good thing to offer paying customers.
I say as many colors as GW will let them get away with (which probably aren't that many)

I'm going with black, white, and various other colors because I want to see them with gray hair as well. Its a happy median of black and white. :D

Grey hair makes them look old, and I don't think Khaine wants his brides to look old :p (hence the Cauldren of Blood)
White and Black would be my choises, because white is the old colour and black the new.

Well, technically speaking I think the looking pretty part is mainly for the benefit of the Witch Elves (and that it makes it easier for them to kill); I think the main thing Khaine is interested in is preventing natural death.
For the rest I agree with you though; I don't think gray hair would suit them.

Just thought I'd indicate the possibility of brunette Witch Elves as shown by the Tier 1 dual-wielding female Dark Elf to the left of this (http://mythicmktg.fileburst.com/war/us/media/images/screenshots/SS_1207_01.jpg) pic.

*Takes notes* Stab black guard in back of head .. got it. Well regardless what color it may start as my hair is inevitably red at the end of the day. Whats a girl to do? I guess the blood doesn't show as much on black .. not sure if thats a good thing though..
