I can't believe nobody spotted this yet. But if you look at the company of elves walking down the ramp, there are several females among them, and they look like low level Black Guards to me.

If this is true, this makes me happy. If destruction had any more gender restriction, I'd have been pissed. Maybe I speak to soon though, maybe they're just regular guard NPCs. Ah well.

Thoughts?

EDIT: It also seems that the heavily armored dark elf in this picture may also be a female BG.

i do believe those are Executioner NPC's :), i could be wrong though, we'd need to get a DE lore buff in here possibly

Afaik Mythic has never said Black Guards would be male-only... I doubt you'll see anymore gender restrictions than there already are.

I can't think of a reason why BGs would be male only, why is it even a question?

That is NPC number 3 in the following art:

http://mythicmktg.fileburst.com/war/us/media/images/conceptArt/CncArt0907_08.jpg

So with other words, that is an Executioner NPC.

Also, as others have said, I think it is save to assume the first picture shows female Disciples.

Men fit their role mentally and physically better than women, thats why. When you think tank you think of a bigass sumo-type guy, now do the same thing but with a girl. I'm not sexist or anything I just don't think women would look right as black guards.

Uh.. they're elves. It's hard to even tell the males apart from the females. There won't be a "bigass sumo-type guy" as the DE tank, no matter if it's male-only or not.

Sorry to bust your bubble. Those aren't female Black Guard. They are in fact, an unlockable mastery class called Emo.

Sorry, I had to go there.

Pretty much, you could make them female and it wouldn't even change their silouette.

first of all, we have female knight of the blazing sun tank, so your reason basically is meaningless. this is a GAME. secondly, in dark elves society, unlike other societies at the time, every man and woman is expected to serve in the army.

There will be female Black Guard.

This whole "females would look wrong as tanks" debate has made me want to roll a dwarf female ironbreaker called Sophie and focus her on the defensive aspects as much as possible just to spite people

I'm forced to ask what you are then? You state pretty clearly that not only do women lack the physical attributes needed in a tank (and any warrior/soldier role as well one can then asume?) but also the mental attributes and you do this in a fashion that doesnt clearly define that you realize that this is within the context of a game. I may be a bit off here but limiting what someone can and can not do because of their gender IS one of the attributes of sexists thinking.

And on the whole "physical attributes" part...

One argument against the "females don't look good as tanks" bullsomething is of course the following:
A male tank will perhaps manage say 20% or 30% more body mass than a female counterpart. Considering that we are talking something similar to the middle ages and eating like a pro bodybuilder (thats around a minimum of 6 large meals per day by the way...) isnt an option then that number is most lilkely a bit of a stretch so probably 10-15% is more of a realistic number.

We still end up with someone that DOESN'T look like Conan (sorry Conan, you're just such a perfect example) and the difference in bodymass between him and that big dragon you want him to tank will probably be around 1-2000%. At least. The difference between a male and a female tank when you expect em to take blows from something ten times and more their size is just not a factor. Him looking slightly beefier and thus somehow "better" just isn't a valid point because he will still be beyond dwarfed by many boss encounters (unless all bosses are human size of course but I doubt that...) and thus realistically speaking he or she will be cruuuushed! Now, one argument here is of course the magical armour that the tanks will most likely wear, thus negating this difference in size. As well as the difference in female/male tanks right?
So what stating that males look better as tanks boils down to is ones personal opinion on what looks pretty basically. Any argument on male tanks being more viable than female tanks should be rendered pretty void by the above stated reasons (wich I invite you to demolish if you can, after all this is a debate ;)).

I'll end this rant with this: if you prefer male characters then roll male characters and if you prefer female characters then roll female characters. But please don't claim that females don't look right as tanks because odds are that a large number of people will disagree and even more people will just not care. Oh, and gender limitations in a MMO is just wrong in my opinion (the greenskin reason I can accept though...).

Sophie the Ironbreaker FTW!

Well, I suppose that goes to show just how much I know about dark elves. Ah well. I thought I stumbled on a gem that I would come share.

And the reason people are skeptical about female black guards is because there are no concept art or screens of them, which in the past spelled doom for the Marauder and Chosen.

True, but unlike them, there's barely any images of male Black Guards either. There's only this:

and this:

Which is pretty much the same picture with different weapons.

And for all we know, that IS a female Black Guard :p

We only have one piece of concept art of the BG, just like we only had one piece of concept art for all the other careers when they were first announced.

Rest assured, there will be female BGs.

It's difficult to tell, but if you look back at this (http://mythicmktg.fileburst.com/war/us/media/images/screenshots/SS_1207_01.jpg) picture, we have another candidate for a female Black Guard.

To the left of the picture, there appears to be a brunette Witch Elf with two large swords who seems to be queuing behind a male Dark Elf, eagerly waiting to purchase a lolly from the local Druchii ice cream van.

Behind her is a long-skirted dark-haired female Dark Elf, who might be a Tier 1 female Black Guard seeing as she has the same criss-cross chest straps as the similarly dressed Dark Elf male in another screenshot floating around whom most assume is the Tier 1 male Black Guard.

Which, if you recall, is almost exactly what happened to the Chosen. I don't know, there's a possibility, but something about this whole thing just screams WRONG! to me. Until then, nobody outside the Mythic and GW offices knows whether there will be female BGs or not.

I don't think it's very clear, but I really think the first pics in black and white are female black guards

http://www.warhammeronline.com/english/behindTheScenes/vidPhoneDiaries/windowopen/november_2007_n00dl3/view24_2007_november.html

It's not Witch Elves, cause they don't have skirts or the sort.

The only toher option would be Sorceress, but if I look closer I see a more plate like coverage of the chest part.

And if I compare the stance of those concepts, they do'nt match with currently released WE or Sorc concepts.

I bet those are sorcs, Black Guard don't have flowing robe-like things. Either way though, we have a good question to ask at the dev chat on wensday.

I love the way the Exeuctioner is holding his sword and staring, as if saying:

"This is my sword...if you try and take my sword...I will gut you..."

The original picture looks bad, real bad. It looks like a very early version of alpha. And AFAIK black guards are a fairly new class, so why would a female version of the class exist in a very early version of alpha?

It's a mob.

How do we know the concept art on the BG career description page is even a male? I don't see a codpiece or jockstrap. Maybe it is a flat-chested female and we have had the proof of female Black Guards under our noses the whole time.

There finally is proof that the Black Guards will NOT be gender restricted, so there will be females. The proof is in the last edition of Beckett Online Magazine. I read this on only-war.

The part of the article which shows both genders are available:

They and the Black Guard are ultimately the ones that have the most equal appearance between genders when it comes to their clothing."

Ok i just wanna say this. I looked at the pictures of the exacutioners and...... THEY STAND THE SAME WAY AS THE SWORDMASTER! Holding the sword in the crook of their arm. Their the in-game equivilent of the samurai. The sword should be rested on their shoulder, or with a wide stance in front of him with both hands.
