View Full Version : Melee Warrior Priest - a short guide for those who lost their faith.

I wrote this short guide for two reasons.
Firstly, to give the new melee warrior priests a bigger picture of playing this class without reading wall'o'text ten pages guides for veteran players what might be just confusing.
The second reason is to pin out the benefits of melee warrior priests on the battlefield that might make the fallen ones reconsider the class they once played.

1. What a melee Warrior Priest can offer in oRvR?
We can bring a huge advantage to the allies during keep or fortess sieges on the gates assault part:
Divine Strike (http://www.wardb.com/spell.aspx?id=8239) - you can heal everyone for insane numbers (even without the extra grace tactic for this skill)
Divine Assault (http://www.wardb.com/spell.aspx?id=8244) - for emergency quick heal (I heal myself to nearly 100% hp in one use on robe/light armored target)
Well basically, nobody will die while hitting the door. You'll aoe outheal oil damage and enemies AoE spells in 1 to 3 swings.

Both those skills also might be very useful for Witch Hunter/White Lion/Slayer trespassing on a suicidal mission as you don't need to see your target to heal it, just need to have it targeted from warband or party box.

2. The Scenarios
The performance in that case is almost fully based on the people you'll end up playing with. Never expect having great fun if your team is totally outleveled or outgeared, the sc's that way are not any great for any class. If you can set up a a good scenario team, your auras will be most welcome as well as the wisely placed divine strike and divine assault heals. Making a perm scenario party is a great thing, life is much brighter with a 50% damage reduction guard from a friendly tank ;)

Grace Warrior Priests with high hitting Divine Strike (http://www.wardb.com/spell.aspx?id=8239) will bring quite a help in many situations and with Grace of Sigmar (http://www.wardb.com/spell.aspx?id=8292) slotted they are able to change whole outcome of the battle.

3. Skirmishing
The days of our godlike solo performance are over.
Despite that, we still are able to win in situations 1 vs x, all depends on your gear and skills but fighting enemies who have high parry or toughness/armor is quite hard.

4. What is needed to be succesfull as a melee Warrior Priest?
Stats:
Don't forget that as melee we make a lot of use of the strength stat, please do not judge the possibilities after you just respecced from salvation and try to hit things wearing full Willpower gear with a green hammer bought at NPC.

(Full Grace)Stats in order of importance:

Strength and Melee Power > Weapon Skill > Melee crit
(Full Wrath)Stats in order of importance:
Strength > Melee crit > Melee Power > Weapon Skill

(enough toughness comes by 'itself' from Sigmar's Greave if you're Grace)

---
The melee DPS tactics:
Divine Fury (http://www.wardb.com/spell.aspx?id=585) - +25% damage is great, -20% heals does not affect melee. So we end up with +25% healing boost.
Greave of Sigmar (http://www.wardb.com/spell.aspx?id=8291) - buff yourself, debuff the enemy, pretty simple and mysteriously efficent.
Fanaticism (http://www.wardb.com/spell.aspx?id=8293) - with average gear this is a must, with top gear it still is a decent tactic.
Hastened Divinity (http://www.wardb.com/spell.aspx?id=8276) - a huge boost to your raw dps
-- All those tactics help you to kill stuff, the less of these you use the harder it will be to hurt anybody

Tree's speciality tactics:
(Wrath)Guilty Soul (http://www.wardb.com/spell.aspx?id=8295) - a must for full wrath WPs
(Grace)Grace of Sigmar (http://www.wardb.com/spell.aspx?id=8292) - obligatory for Grace WPs and nowadays our most reliable healing ability.

5. And the big question: Greathammer or the book?
You can try hybriding with 1hander/book but you'll lose your killing potential, simple as that.
Greathammers are for killing, one-handers are for spanking.

6. PvE instances hardship - the only weakness
The answer: attitude of the random people.
Many players think that WP is only a back line healer that should do nothing but bash 2 buttons being half asleep because of boredom. We are still viable in PvE with our melee heals, auras and the damage that really is not as inferior as they think.
Lack of knowledge or pure stupidity is what we should expect to see often.
That's the only real downside of melee Warrior Priest as a separate class in this game, not getting an invitation to a random PvE party is something I can handle though, it's warhammer after all.

7. Summing up
If you made your Warrior Priest strictly to teach heretic fools the right using a greathammer it's totally all right. Do not drop that idea only because equiping the book makes the game easier or some random guy hates you for not being his personal heal-bot on a scenario.

8. Some good specs as for an example

Full Grace with half Wrath (http://www.wardb.com/career.aspx?id=12#0:0:15:8232:7:128:29:8291:585:82 93:8276::::694:692:696:697)(Average Melee Heals/DPS) - Good damage from grace abilities, quite good damage from the wrath aura and +15% crit with this set of tactics you'll be able to pull off a great damage.
(Suggesting Weapon Skill liniments)

Wrath/Grace (http://www.wardb.com/career.aspx?id=12#0:0:6:40:15:10368:29:585:8291:82 93:8295)(DPS) - Higher initiative debuff, higher damage from wrath aura, glorious Guilty Soul helps a lot.
(Suggesting Wounds/Crit liniments)

Universal Build (http://www.wardb.com/career.aspx?id=12#9:512:13:8232:0:0:29:585:8291:82 76)(Heal/DPS switch) - Good build for those who sometimes like to equip a book eg. in a scenario and efficiently heal without respeccing. On higher renown just pump points further into salvation tree.
(Suggesting Willpower liniments while switching to book, Weapon Skill ones when in DPS mode)

9. Short gameplay video-presentation of melee warrior priest in pvp
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wxo-yBBX9oA&fmt=18
--Full Grace with half Wrath (items mostly purple RvR rewards)

10. Last reflexions
why Grace over Wrath? - Cause what's the reason to play a warrior priest which does about same dmg but heals much less?
We are healers but we are not self efficient in that, best way to describe the fact will be saying "You need to be healed to heal"

Hope you guys found the guide useful
Updating every patch till I'm gone

Nice write-up, I just started a WP a couple days ago and found I'm enjoying the healing, but I didn't expect to be underwhelming in melee - I'd rather do both if it works out.

So I look forward to getting some career points and giving melee WP a good look, ty :)

Nice guide, thanks for taking the time to create this. It's nice to see something relatively short that contains some substance. I enjoy my Melee WP and keep some gear aside in case I need to turn to a more healing roll.

A very nice and concise guide indeed!

I really like the Grace with Salvation spec myself, I'm gonna go that way with my WP alt. I like to help party mates out whilst also clubbin' some dumb Destro in the meantime too!

Watched the video finally.

Here is the list of the falimiar names from the video:

0:10 : Minamara
0:12 : Evennia
0:15 : Matrosov
0:20 : Sazabi
0:21 : Arghad
0:50 : Pyromar
0:55 : Feni
0:55 : Kanashibari
0:55 : Riks
2:10 : Bemep
2:13 : Pyromar

2:14 : Kanashibari
2:16 : Bemep
3:00 : Bemep
3:01 : Pyromar
3:05 : Feni
3:10 : Kanashibari

Output: the successful way to play melee WP is to be in the same scenario with 1 of "Black Company" (http://www.wardb.com/guild.aspx?id=1157) premaids. :D

Nice guide otherwise but i should warn ppl a bit - melee WP is not so easy mode as it seems to be, especially when it gets crowded (12-18 ppl scenarios and oRvR).

Nice guide. I might give my melee WP another shot, even though I was severely disillusioned by T4 playing with him.

True, it goes a bit like for any normal dps class. Get targeted by the crowd and you're dead ;)
