View Full Version : SW the class for me?

I've been reading up a bit, and watching a few videos and such, and have become really interested in the Shadow Warrior. I like the ability to run and shoot at the same time, all while being able to be good at melee.
the only problem is, I don't want it to be like the Hunter in WoW. I didn't like the hunter in WoW, because it was too much ranged for me. And it was frowned upon if you went into Melee as a hunter.

So the thing is, I want the perception of other people about the SW. Will it be bad if I like to melee as a SW?

I would love this class if I could just run around shooting, but then get closer to finish them off with my sword. I don't want to be afraid of melee, and if possible, actually melee half the time and range the other half.

Is the Shadow Warrior what I hope it will be?

It depends.

Are you going to not shoot first, and simply just rush into melee? Or are you going to make a fair use of your bow as well?

Since the SW works on stances, you'll always at least be competent with your sword (you'll just have to switch to assault stance). However, I would expect to be going either Scouting or Skirmishing some time in your character's life. Assault doesn't seem like it'd fit every scenario you could come across in the game, but it also seems like it adds enough survivability that it'd be viable in many situations (so long as the rest of your group isn't really relying on you.)

However, again, with stances... you could go assault and give some attention to your melee, so long as you realize that sometimes you're going to want to be in your other stances before hand.

So, depending on that, I would say that it's quite likely that SW is up your alley.

Eh, sort of. I think you'll probably be meleeing (specced assault I believe) probably 20-30% of the time at most. From my knowledge, it's far from a melee DPS class, but it can still melee when the situation is right. The special melee abilities for SWs are rooting abilities, so that you can get back into range.

You might be more interested in Witch Hunters, but it sounds like you'd like both.

Going into melee too much and in inconvenient ways will be frowned upon. As for my perception of the class, its ranged >.> On the career video introducing this class Paul made sure (or rather everyone else made him) everyone understood that, its a ranged fighter and will always be more effective in ranged combat. However, its effectiveness is melee is obviously going to be better than say, a magus, so if your looking for a ranged skirmisher type class the SW is definitely your best option.

I will be using my bow at first. I wouldn't want to have to use my sword, until after I shoot a few arrows. That would be foolish if all I wanted was to melee.

But when I go into Assault stance, will I have more melee attacks than just ones to get me back into ranged? I want to stand and swing a bit before I have to get back into ranged.

I'm not looking for a class that can just "holds its own" in melee long enough to get back into ranged. I'm looking for one that can be quite successful (with the right stance?) in melee range. They don't have to be amazing in melee, or even great. But still be good in it. Better than average, possibly?

Well, my idea for a pure shadow warrior rvr group actually depends on some players wanting to do melee. The major crowd controlling skills will be melee. That doesnt mean they will be counted upon to kill their targets. They are controlling the targets. Thats atleast how I envision it.

So if you can accept that your ranged dps class can do decent damage in melee and has great crowd control ability in melee then it should be good for you. When alone though I would highly suggest you remember its a ranged dps class and do most of your damage from range before jumping into melee.

I guess the Witch Hunter would be a better choice then.

Yes sir, if you are looking for a melee based high elf to play I would look to the to be announced White Lion.

It is expected to be a Melee based character who will fight with a huge two handed axe as well as having a white lion pet. Sounds like a lot of fun.;)

We may still bring you over yet.

Well, I think you should at least try the SW out. If you pick the assualt stance, you will probably be pretty cabaple at melee, but still not as strong as a melee dps or a tank. However, you will do good against casters. Since you are not playing up to your cariers strenth, you will not do (overall) as much damage as those who do. And there will be some people that try to convince you that you are playing wrong (because some people will say anything). On the other hand, there will be destruction players that`ll get a serious surprise when they find out, that you are much better at melee than they thought.

Of course this is just my guesswork:smile:, no one really knows anything, and those who do cant talk.

i believe the shadow warrior if you go assault/skirmish you run toward your enemy shooting using dots defuffs/armor piercings then you go in and slow them then lay out the damage if they try to runaway you chase-after them shooting just my 2 cents oh and i would not be assault/skirmish i would be skirmish/assault. but assualt/skirmish would be fine just not my play-style

This does sound interesting, indeed. I will still try out SW. But The White Lion sounds... extreme. hehe
We will see?
Anyone have any pictures? Sketch art? Anything of the White Lion?

This is the leaked GOA picture that has basically confirmed the White Lion's inclusion in WAR:
