View Full Version : An Early Goodbye...Maybe

Ok, while most of you have probably have no idea who I am (and to be completely honest I know none of you either) I am here to say what is possibly a goodbye to WAR and the Archmage community very early. I have been following WAR for a while now (this is a much newer profile, changed it cuz i hated the username of the last one). At the start I was following the Runepriest and Shaman, but as soon as Archmage was announced I was nearly certain that it was the class I would play.
Since then I have been following the class and game, getting ready for the free time my school work load and schedule was going to allow for WAR at the start of next year...then I got thinking. I have a crappy school issued computer that runs WoW at a crappy ~18fps on average, while WAR is not Crysis it certainly has more advanced graphics than WoW. So I started wondering if my intergrated chip would be able to handle WAR to I could get a decent enough fps to make the game worthwhile.
Unfortuantely a thread I read stated that an intergrated card like my own would not be able to run WAR effectively enough to really make it worth it. This of course came as a devistating realization because there is no way my parents will buy me a new better laptop to run a video game that will definitely take up probably a good amount of my time, and going to school I cant come up with the money to buy it myself. I thought of upgrading but further research revealed that upgrading a graphics card on a laptop is just not a possibility.
Its very unfortunate, WAR was going to be the last mmo I played, I was going to stop after WoW but WAR just sounded too good to not play. But now that I have realized that it is just physically not possible for me to play the game I'm thinking of just calling it quits now so I dont build myself up for a huge letdown. Maybe it will be able to run at the same fps that it did WoW, but most likely not, once I get on open beta I'll have a better idea.
But anyways, though most of you dont care, were all part of the Archmage community so I thought I'd give you guys a holler as I prepare to leave. If my computer is the death of my WAR career before it even starts I would like to say that I am thankful I will have Gears of War 2, Fifa/NHL '09, and Fable to take my mind off the fact that I could be playing WAR. The Archmage class will be awesome, have fun owning guys.

Phew I thought you were another person complaining about the Dev-chat.
That's a bummer man sorry your card cant handle it even though i dont know you, you will be missed.
Think of the delay as a way for you to get that card you need :) Get a part-time job, save up some pocket money, rob an old lady, do whatever you need to do.
I'm sure if you go here

They'l help you out and tell you what is the cheapest card you can get for your system. They're a lot cheaper than you think!
Hope you can get that card you need

Yeah would be sad if you couldn't play because of such an issue, you still have time, and you don't even need to play from the start. I joined WOW like half a year after the start and still had a blast for a long time.

LOL! 18 fps is bad? mine used to rarely get above 20 and I was constantly around 10 haha and 10+ was no lag but not great. But if i was in a major city down to a 5. Haha id say like 15 on average. Thank god im getting a new laptop with a deacent gaming card it it. Sorry bro that sux. I wish the best of luck for you. Maybe you could work out a deal with them or try WAR out on ur comp ne ways. Everything is worth a shot.

I was actually glad that they set the release date back to fall because it gives me more time to save up to get a rocking system! Take advantage of the time and you should be able to scrape up some things over the next 5-6 months!

Every single High elf player who doesnt show up will be missed. We arent exactly an overpopulated population here. ;)
Perhaps the pushed back release is a godsend for you. You may have to work a bit more to get what you need though.

I'm currently on a laptop myself now, but I doubt it would be able to play WAR as well as I'd like. That, and I also have my eyes on a few other games that come out Q4 '08 or Q1 '09 (as it stands now, at least). Anyways, the delays mean that I have more time to save my money for a good computer.
The recommendation has been made, and I'll repeat it; get a job to earn some money, and you'll be laughing.
I cant say that leaving the mmo world is a bad decision, but know that you will be missed.

Screwhealz, building new computer nowadays is not only for rich people. If you really want have decent computer which would run WAR decently even in large battles, you will be very suprised with price in a good way. Think about it buddy.. Or at least ask guys here and I am sure everyone who has clue about computers will help you (including me).

Since you're still going to school it sounds like you don't have any real expenses. Yet ;)
So why not pick up a some smalltime job ? The game won't be out for another few months, and even if you're only getting in about 40 hours a month at 4-7$ an hours you'd still be looking at anything from 800-1400$ saved in september.
That and knowing that you've really earned it could perhaps be enough to motivate you ;)
Just a thought really.

Yeah man just find a job, a new card costs what, 2-300 dollars for one that will run WAR easily? Just work at mcdonalds or something for a week, makin 8 bucks an hour. If your school ends at 3 or so, work from 3 to 7 or 8, make around $30-40 a day, you'll have the money in no time brother

Also, consider waiting for system requirements to come out. The people telling you what will/won't work are speculating, nothing more.

Yeah thinking about it know, i think that by selling my old laptop, working my off over summer I should be able to upgrade to a better laptop that would be able to handle WAR smoothly. I would just upgrade but since I have an integrated card in a laptop that isnt an option right now, much harder to do than on a desktop.
Thanks for the ideas, I found a site that lets you build laptops for really good prices...so i think that if I am able to find someone to buy my current computer that it will cost me very little to get a newer, much better computer. Possibly this one http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Xplorer_X5-5850_Notebook/ which I think should run WAR just fine, correct me if I'm wrong.
And yeah I think the delay was a sign that I should get my in gear once I get back home for summer vacation early May, I should be able to get plenty of money through work and selling my old computer to get a new one that will run WAR just fine. I just have to budget my spending this summer, I tend to spend a lot of money on other things, but knowing that the money is going to a new comp should be plenty of incentive to keep it stored away.

Why don't you keep your laptop for school and travel related issues. Save up money, and buy a cheap desktop?
You can build it for relatively cheap. And if you are willing to get a crappy monitor (or just have an old one lying around), its even cheaper. Or, you can choose not to build, and just buy a cheap PC (without a monitor). You are going to want something with a good sized HD, and good processors. As long as you can upgrade your RAM/Video card, you don't need to buy them in the initial package (just make sure you don't get an intergrated).
I went online, and made some computers as various companies. You can get a dual core, with a 512 mb graphics card, and at least 1gig of ram, for around 600-900 bucks (without a monitor), but with everything else (320 gig hd, keyboard/soundcard/mouse, etc).
2g of ram would only cost you less then 50 bucks more, and if you don't feel like upgrading later, it may be a good choice to just do it throught the company.

oh cmon! how hard is it to spend 350 euros.. like, 150 for a 8800, and the rest for the dual core and one extra GB memory =P

I was passing through WalMart the other day, they had a HP laptop for $398. It had a 3.0ghz AMD, 1gig ram, x1900 video card (or it could hqave been the x1600). and a 80 gig drive.
Just look around, you can find all kinds of cheap deals.

Might be a first time Job, so that can be scary for some. If you look around, you might be able to find some Part time or summer jobs that are easy. Then simply do the math. Even at only 20hrs/wk - you should have the money in just a few short weeks.
Personally, I think it would be a good exprience and probably would impress your parents. Getting a job to pay for the computer to play the game, is a demonstration of early responsiblity, and might also buy you some slack about how much you play.

Hmm... we don't know what the system spec requirements will be for Warhammer, do we? Cause there are some very cheap deals you can get on cards these days.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/buy_now_results.html?id=8400GS
That's a card that could run AoC without a hitch - I'm not sure how demanding Warhammer will be, but I know AoC is pretty tough to run, so it's something to consider. (Naturally, you shouldn't buy anything until we know exactly what the specs are, hehe.)
But yeah, don't give up! We need more high elves, and especially more archmages. ;)

I'm sure WAR will be around in a few years so you could buy a good comp buy then.
I don't have a comp that can run it yet realy, but I figure 600 bucks for a new graphics card and a stick or two of ram and I'll be ready to go.

I hope you sort something out.

QFT!
But seriously, from what I have read, Mythic is trying to make the game very accessible by making the requirements a very flat incline when compared to wow. Although, if you were only running wow at 18 fps to begin with, there could be some potential problems.
Sorry to hear that you have to quit before the game has even begun, Man, considering that the Archmage will probably be a very desirable class.

I like all the 'just find a job' posts. Ya, just find a job, our economy isn't going down the shitter with people fighting over spots for walmart stocking positions or anything, oh wait yes it is (assuming you live in USA).

Ok so we all have no need to fear now, for Screwhealz is back and ready for WAR! I just built a diesel desktop that runs Age of Conan at 50fps so I think it should handle WAR pretty well. On a side note, Conan was a very disappointing game and I have stopped playing it already, I now plan on messing around in WoW on and off until WAR is released or I manage a spot on the open beta.
I havent been on these forums in a while but plan on updating my Archmage video thread sometime later today when I have enough time to make the necessary edits to the thread. To be honest I am still debating on what class to play, I want to play a healer, but also miss my melee dps days. Hopefully the beta will clear things up but as it is right now Im archamge all the way....so lets keep this forum bumpin'

Ok so I opened the thread and felt bad for you, flip to page 2 and now I'm jealous since my computer is getting old fast and while it should run WAR, yours will run it better :D
Regardless, welcome back and see you in the beta or possibly kill you in the beta :P

Acer aspire 5920g is £799. You get 2gb DDR2 RAM, an Intel Core 2 duo processor T7300, GeForce 8600m GS (256MB).
I got this last summer when I was heading to University and wanted a laptop that would let me game without any problems. I was amazed by this in all honesty. It is a bit of a brick and can burn your lap if your gaming on it but it runs these games fine..
EVE online (new graphics and maxed), COD4 maxed and Splinter Cell:DA maxed.
Got it via an easy summer job in a shop. Menial work but stuff like that is better than making coffee for people in an office, you will learn stuff and damn it feels good to not rely on parents for cash. Should run WAR fine given the games with higher graphics in runs (cod4 MP also). Despite that I only ever run stuff on normal settings when I play so gameplay with it should be fine.
Might have come down in price a bit now.
