I have to say I was just a tad dissapointed on these to gathering professions. I was really kinda liking the thought of "butchering" my foes on the battlefield and collecting body parts to use in potions. But come to find out that it's only for monsters and animal type mobs kinda bums me out. Just kinda reminds me of "skinning" in that other game. Not the end of the world but was wondering if anyone else was a little dissapointed that they spit it up that way?

I dont quite follow you. I didnt see anything that negated that butchering couldnt be used in potion making. They gave an example that you find spores and seeds off creatures so that sounds like scavenging to me. The way they described the flow of things I imagine that cheap components are from merchants. next level of effect and rarity would be from drops. perhaps they plan on the great stuff to be from butchering and scavenging. As it is right now there really isnt a clear use for the 2 and we will probably get more info as time passes. Remember that we have several months till launch. they need to save some info to announce for later.
Remember that the cultivating skill is taking a seed or spore and turning it into a useable component. It doesnt do anything with getting the seed in the first place.

You think a Teen rating would allow you to cut people to pieces and take their spines or eyes?....
Scavenging works on humanoids pockets are your friends... though i'm not really sure why you need the skill to be able to rifle through someones pockets... but sure.

to make things clear on the crafting
Growing- main ingredent for potions
Disenchanting - main ingredent for talismans
butchering and scavenging provide misalanious items used in both professions

Yea I guess it maybe a rating thing. I wanted to cut ears off and make a necklace ;)
But as long as there are a few more professions I think there crafting will be great.

Yes. Yes I do think a Teen Rating would allow that. Simply because it wouldn't show you doing it. You would just get the end product. If a Teen Rating can allow people to wear severed heads on their belts then I really dont think an icon that says "Human ear" or "human spine" is out of the question.

Why not? Teen rated games already let you cut off peoples;
Hands
Ears
Heads
and likely more, those are just the ones I can think of off of the top of my head. Teen ratings don't mean happy fun sping-time land. It just means you wouldn't actually, visually perform the action. But I can think of about 20 quests in WoW where my objective was to kill somone and return their head to the quest giver as proof.
You know what that means? It means I walked into that castle, murdered that mage, sawed off his head, placed it in my knapsack, trekked about a mile ish back north, and handed it to someone for a some cash and a shiny ring.
Mmmm, teen ratings (http://www.pjlighthouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/dota-warcraft-pudge-papercraft-fresh-meat.jpg). Nothing like the imagery of a bloated stiched together corpse with his stapled stomach coming undone allowing his intestines, stomach, and other juicy bits to slide right out at you.

I think they should allow butchering of humanoids after they have been scavenged. This would increase popularity of butchering because nobody would feel like they HAVE to PvE to use their trade skill. It should just give meat and bones like butchering a non sentient being. Kill animal ----> Butcher it. Kill humanoid ----> scavenge it ----> butcher it. Sure you would have to be with someone else to do both but I'm sure you wouldn't have a problem finding someone to scavenge your corpses for you so that you can butcher them. Just an idea. Maybe someone could help flesh it out.

What would be the point of only being able to scavenge some things if you could butcher everything? Its about options right there. There is PvE content in the game, butchery goes with that, but one thing to remember is that there will be mobs in RvR areas. Furthermore what tradeskills you have is your choice. if you don't want to kill the mobs necessary to butcher then don't choose butchery.

All of these things are willing to change. they might add-on something ya know.
I don't think butchering/scavenging is a bad crafting choice. They both will work out evenly :), smart creatures that have pockets and be scavenged while monsters that don't wear clothes can't be scavenged. It makes sense and is great if ya ask me.
I think everything is absolutely amazing. they took out recipes so its gonna be a surprise at everything you make. but ya know now that I think of it they should allow it so that you can write it down and make it a recipe and then sell it to other people..hmm :-P

I don't think the Teen Rating is the only thing preventing the butchering of opposing faction races. Think of it from a lore-wise point of view. Can you really picture High Elves, in their delicate armour and flowing robes...stooping over an Orc corpse, bloodied up to the elbows?
"Hey Calthron! Heres another Orc arm for your potion pot!"
The evil races may have no problem butchering foes, but the 'good' races would probably think themselves to be 'above' such barbarism :p
Although that wont stop them taking trophies of course :D

if you can butcher / scaveng other players it brings looting into rvr which is a bad thing.
and i totaly agree on your lore point lol
that said i want some elf ear trophies on my ork lol XD

You can get a myriad of items from scavenging... you only get meat, bones and skin from butchering. Seems to me that if something has meat bones and skin you should be able to butcher it. Why would a squig be carrying around seeds? We know why an Elf would be carrying meat skin and bones... that's what he's made out of.
On a side not about looting in RvR you loot PvP boots off of player's corpses. Looting is already involved with RvR I hope that doesn't bother you. They said chest is from keep lords and boots are from players..... the rest is vendors. I'm sure that is subject to change like everything else in beta but that's what they stated before. ;)

after thinking about this more a better solution is going to be much simpler
1 crafting 2 gathering.
so you can chose either crafting profession and its skill and then either scavenging or butchery.
then simply for expansions you just have 2 add professions in pairs so a Crafting and the gathering skill that matches it
usaly when anything is this simple and el agent it just makes sense

Why is it that some people think butchering is for PvE and scavenging is for PvP?
Last I know, I never heard or read anything regarding scavenging dead player characters.
In fact, the example shown in the podcast is a scaven, which is clearly not a playable race.
I really don't think you can scavenge player characters to be honest. I would hate it if I come across some scavengers in RvR zone, not contributing to the war effort at all but just scavenge around for loot. Or party members that would say "You guys go ahead, I'm gonna loot these 174687234682346238 corpses lying around. Meanwhile, just try to stay alive without my heals"
But if scavenging player characters really is possible, then there's also no reason to think that butchering will only be for PvE. Butchering White Lions and Squigs anyone? Maybe even scavenging Engineer's turrets and butchering Magus' horror summons? =D
ps: I would love to butcher white lions to be honest.

you can already loot other players so being able to scavenge them isnt much of an issue.
would only be ok if you could only do it out of combat.
but i think my idear of 1 crafting 2 gathering makes it so evryone can loot al least half the things in the game and still craft effishently. or loot everything and suck at crafting.

This was exactly what I was thinking. It doesn't make sense to have butchering apply only to non-player monsters/beasts (which I am *guessing* have minimal presence in RvR), and then give scavengers apply to all non-player humanoids *and* players of the opposing faction.
Then again it only makes sense that I would bash someone's brains in and then search them for goodies....if i couldn't do that I'd feel somewhat gyped.
