Since people have been failing at making proper lists and realizing you can only have 1 crafting and 1 gathering, i'll make a proper one.
So at this point in time are you going...

I'm going to start out apothecary/cultivating, but if I don't like it or if I find out that talisman making is cooler later in the game I'll swap.

I am going to start off with scavenging and apothecary to gain early access to crafting healing potions (yes I know I probably should get cultivating to maximize that but Im a scavenger at heart) but later in all probability I will switch to talisman making.
Wether or not I will switch scavenging to magical salvage only time will tell.

Talisman making and magical salvaging. It seems like something that will be really useful and I'm the kind of person that likes passives over actives.

Talisman Making and Scavenging...
Talismans because they seem to be more like permanent buffs to your items
Scavenging because doesn't seem like many people will take scavenging over Magical Scavenging

Still makes me laugh thinking of a chaos warrior (chosen) running around yelling
"SKULL FOR THE SKULL THRONE!!!! but pretty purple flowers come to kharn!!"

LOL, I guess that's another good reason for me going Scavenging and Talisman making... seems more fitting for a Chosen

Apothecary/Cultivating definitely. They pretty much go together perfectly, so I'm expecting to see a lot of people make their own potions (for themselves and guildies) and not a lot of them going on sale.
Apothecary + Cultivating, many people say they will switch to Magical + Talismans at End-Game.. what and buff potions wont be good at end-game? though a pimped-out talisman/trinket covered squig herder would be nice.. no! im being swayed, Apoth and Cultivating!

well since you want to collect as many indgredients throughout the game i'd go with butchering and scavenging, since any items I want to make will mostly be of use in the end game, so I collect all this stuff for 40 levels then switch skills to talisman making and whatnot.

Nice to see Crafting wont eat up hordes of your time. Butchery & alchemy for me. Anything but butchering dont seem to suit Black Orc

Talisman making/scavenging. Simply because the other stabilizing items you need to actually make the talisman, come from scavenging, so I will just trade myself the essences if it is right for me. Or I will just sell..
Butchering/apothecary goes the same way.. Items accuired through butchering is needed to stabilize the main ingredient (cultivated plant) to actually make the potion, so you can make some money outta there aswell

I did pick Apothecary + Cultivating, but seeing how many people are choosing that (if that's any indicator of the game)
I'll probably go with Apothecary + Scavenging my second choice.
I think they need to make Scavenging, Butchering, and Magical Salvaging as interactive as the Cultivating seems to be.
Maybe with some options of what part of the things body you want to scavenge or butcher with varying success rates based on which part you choose.
is there a thread about what you can make with each combo ?
(should be stickied...)

My wife will be cultivating/apothecary so I'm gonna do scavenging/apothecary and give her the seeds I scavenge. I might do butchering if we find that butchering has the better supplementary items for potions.

Talisman Making/Scavenging. No real reason, it just seems appealing to me. Permanent buffs > Consumables.

I honestly don't know at this point , as a healer I guess apothecary / cultivating is the obvious choice . The lack of people voting on other gathering skills worries me a little , especially butchering, simply with the game being rvr centric , more will go scavenging I guess.
I would have liked to butcher and scavenge , but since this isn't an option , I'll wait and see how things develop once open beta arrives and make a more informed decision then.

Talisman Making+ Magical Salvaging if it's like jewelcrafting and you slot the things you make into your armor permenantly. I'm not a big fan of crafting personaly and would rather trade for potions. Talisman i will only need to make em when i have open slots.
Apothecary +Cultivating. I like herbs.

I ll go for Apothecary/cultivating.
Based on my "wow" experience, it sounds similar to herbalism/alchemy.
The talisman making same, wow player will recognize it as enchanting.
Apothecary is very useful for PvE, instance, potions and stuff. Rare potions you can't buy or can't loot.
Talisman would pex different range of weapons to create new "genre/rare talisman" or improve stats on some parts of your gear.
When I started wow, i first went for "enchanting" (Talisman) or "jewellery" later on. It's a hard job, very expensive and takes time to make decent stuff.
I then chose Apothecary which was way more fun and somewhat more useful for your guild.
So 2 directions => potions for PvE or improving your gear.
I know WoW and War are completly different, but this is how I see it so far. However Mark insists that War won't be a recipe based crafting style. So I might be wrong in any case lol
This poll reinforces the claim I've been making to my friends about crafting in Warhammer.
Some people might disagree with me, but I am a firm believer that disallowing two gathering professions will not discourage farmers, as Mythic and people on this board seem to believe. Rather, it will encourage them even more. By allowing only one gathering profession to go along with a crafting profession, they are setting up unofficial pairings. The pairings were even stated in the crafting video:
Apothecary <--> Cultivating
Talisman Making <--> Magical Salvaging
These are the two combos that the bulk of the people playing this game will flood to, simply because they "make sense". Because of this, the supply of items obtained through these four professions will skyrocket and demand will plummet.
The people who took the other two professions (Butchering and Scavenging) will be in a vast minority. Because of this, they will be able to hold onto their individual markets and let supply go down so that demand will hit the roof. Farming will be alive and well as people will be forced to pay hideous prices for objects that Mythic probably thought would be cheap, such as bones and meat.
I'm just hoping that someone over at Mythic realizes this and implements the obvious solution: Allow two gathering professions but NOT two crafting professions. If this happens, people who do not like to craft will be allowed to take Butchering and Scavenging and simply profit from killing mobs for fun. The supply on those items will go up and the demand will go down along with the prices. Problem solved...

prices probably will be fine, I'm not worried about a hardcore economy.
The thing about butchering and scavenging is that people might end up fighting over corpses in groups.
I think I will end up having an effective 3 toons (me my brother and a friend) all on different accounts. So between them we will figure out 1 butcher 1 scavenger and a cultivator. And my main will be apothecary, I guess I'll have to pay for my talismans.

Butchering so I can get something out of all the random animals that aggro on me and Apoth since I can't see any ingredients for jewelry coming out of animals in a pleasant way.
I'm gonna pick Talisman making and magical salvaging

For now I'm going to go with talisman making and magical scavenging, because I always forget to use potions anyway. Open beta will likely be a deciding factor, along with whatever my friends choose.

Scavenging and Talisman Making.
Scavenging sounds waaaay better than Butchering. I also like professions that make solid goods that aren't consumables so Talisman making.
Apothocary + Cultivating on my main and Talismin making + Magical Salvaging on my alt.

Yikes it seems everyone is going talisman making and magical scavenging - I might have to change my choice, as it seems that martket will be swimming in an abundance.
for me Apothecary +Cultivating

Does anyone know that if you use Apothecary, and you use a potion in battle, if when you die does the potion effect end, or will it last for the entire hour, 2 hours regardless of whether you are alive or dead?

Most likely cultivating and apothecary for now. Maybe Mythic'll add more crafting professions later to give people more choice than just the two.
Plus it's always good to have some potions to chug down.

I do know I want to do Scavenging, but I'm not sure whether I'll want to craft at all. So just Scavenging for now.

Apoc + cult
Shaman with mushrooms FTW.
Plus, I just always like the potion brewing ideas in games and this one seems particularly good.

depends on what class i'll play. if i play a SW/BW/Sorc then alchemy. since backfire will be slowing down my nuking in RvR =P and SW seems rather fragile and has no healing.
if i choose archmage/shaman then maybe something else, like talisman making.

I believe I will suggest my wife go Talisman making + mag. Salvaging, while I go Apoth. + Scavenging. Mark Jacobs' video suggested that you don't necessarily need cultivating to be an apothecary, and I am sure I will find various items through scavenging to give both to her and aid my apothecary skills.

I was initially considering Apothecary/Cultivating, but the more I think on it the more attractive Magical Salvaging/Talisman Making appears.

Butchering and Scavenging for me. I might make something for myself later on, but for starters I'll just sell stuff people need to make stuff. Rather worry about not having money then making the best thing I can make.
Question about Cultivating.... When I received the trade quest I was able to get the shrroms from up on the hill in Chapter II .... But since then I have yet to find any cultivatable materials laying around the world. Am I missing something ?

For me it depends if they are going to bring in weapons crafting and armor crafting. Secandery craft skill will suport the primary skill.

Leaning towards Butchering/Apoth on one character (Engineer most likely) and Scavaging/Apoth on the other (Swordmaster). Might make a third alt for cultivating. Not really interesting in talismans after hating enchanting in WoW.

First main will be a scavanger only - for simplicity and to avoid the gold loss of salvaging. 2nd main will be cultivation / apothecary - fed by the first, that should cover almost all I need for apocthecary. These two will be levelled pretty much side-by-side
In a similar way I'll have 2 further characters running butchery only and salvage / talismans. Salvaging is coming last as it's most likely to be a cash sink as you break down magical items.
I'm doing apothecary first as short term potion effects are more likely to be useful while levelling and the longer term talisman effects are more likely to be helpful at higher levels.
All depends on how things feel in OB though.

Im going to start off with scavenging and apothecary probably switching to talisman making at a later date.
Now for dedicated players I can really reccomend cultivating, high level cultivators will be rare due to how it works.
The initial cultivation "runs" take 3 min, 1 min to add soil, 1 min to add water and 1 min to add ferilizer.
You cant add all three at the same time, you have to plant the seed and add soil within 1 min. When that min is up you have 1 min to add water and finaly after 2 min after planting you can add the fertilizer.
The low level soil, water and fertilizers only reduce the time to the next stage takes place by I think it was 20 sec.
True you can plant and forget the addatives for the first 20-30 skillpoints but its still time consuming and as far as I could see higher level seeds and additives did not change the factor by much.
I never got the chance to advance cultivation far so I only know the start but as you will have to hoard seeds and constantly grow stuff it will be many who simply will not be able to skill up to the high skill needed for the most fun stuff.
Scavenging on the other hand is fast, quick gratification.
Use and get the reward in your hand instantly.
I got a nice split of apoth, seeds/spores and talisman items allowing me to be a productive gatherer for cultivating apoth and talisman maker so it will be popular.
I never got round to do butchering but expect it will work similarly to scavenging.
Talisman making and magical salvage however was not as far as I could figure out online in the closed BETA.

i was thinking talisman/culti on main, and apoc/salvaging on my alt, that way early lvls on my main i can collect mats for apoc then send to my alt, that way i wont lose money from salvaging, later when i got my mount send higher lvl greens over to my alt, and lvl my alt to get low lvl greens (or just buy with main) to salvage, lvl apoc same time and send talisman mats over to my main haha:) if that makes sense..

Recently rethought how to distribute the skills. Decided to go butchering/apoc on swordmaster and 3 others, scavanging/apoc on the engineer and 3 others, cult/apoc on the warrior priest, and mag. salv/tal. on the witch hunter.
I am finding apoc super useful and thinking of moving found items around to level them all. I hope talisman is good, but suspect it will be a major money sink like enchanting was. I was a 375 enchanter in WoW and hated every minute of it. Only one of my characters will go for talisman.

From my experience so far Butchering >>>>>>>>>>>>Cultivation for Apothecary. I tried Cultivation during the PW and OB and while I did enjoy it, in the end I still had to buy way too many mats for potions. So after hearing a little more about Butchering I decided to try it out yesterday to accompany my Apothecary craft. IT IS AMAZING! I never have to buy any mats other than the bottles. You get main ingredients, stabilizers, and all of the other secondary ingredients you could ever want! So far I've made potions for +armor, AP generation, healing, +toughness, fire breathing, all at level 9! And the best part is that my bags stay full of free mats that are ready to use the second that I loot them!
