I'm wondering how everyone thinks the Engineers will solo. Since we don't have a pet tank like in WoW, how do you think the battles will go?
Heavy firepower with ranged snares to keep people away? Blow them up before they can reach us? Mix of ranged, and then melee when they get close? Something else?

I'm of the assumption that I'll more than likely be opening with a grenade with some sort of snare/slowing effect, then opening up with the rifle.
Also, probably lay down a mine in front of myself, or a turret for tougher targets.

I imagine that the Engineer will not play like most ranged DPS. In other words they won't be doing a lot of running and gunning. More likely since their turrest are stationary they'll setup in a position and pull to their defensive position with their turret.

With the changes they have made to the class, I expect your play-style will tie in very closely with your mastery path.
I expect those who go for Rifleman mastery path will focus on taking out the enemy before they get close, opening with the snipe ability and using the gun turret quite often.
I think the other two paths seem more suited to letting your enemies get close to you before hitting them with everything you have, using the flame turret, mines and grenades, before using the barb wire ability to keep them from getting to you.
I think I'll go the second option myself, it sounds more interesting and I like things that go 'bang':D

Damn, with the turrets, mines, barbed wire, and grenades I imagine the Engineer will be able to take on entire camps.
I'm seriously considering converting from a Squig Herder to a Magus. This playstyle looks very interesting.

I'm personally on the fence. I'd like to try this class out a bit. I like the idea behind it for sure, but I'm just not so sure about setting up "base camps" where you do your damage. For one it leaves you vulnerable in PvP when traveling places, and two you always have to get the jump. You have to have your base camp ready or you're at a disadvantage.
I know that didn't have to do with PvE, but hearing how the playstyle might work in practice just got me thinking of other things.

From what I seen from pve leveling vids, if a mob gets into melee range the engineer can't shoot and they have to use melee attacks to kill the mob.

The only downside I see to the engineer is its very easy to avoid his full power when you fight him. Sure if you have to get something where he has set up an ambush its gonna hurt, but coming from a long time WoW shaman, let me tell you totems were just about useless even at instant cast speed, as your opponent had to be mentally retarded to stand around and let you fight around your buffing totems.
I have a feeling its going to be very similar here, alot of midrange firepower, but the smart non meelee opponent will sit at max range and just outshoot us, not having to worry about bombs or mines or turrets.

Becouse PVE enamies will never run out of range of your turrets, so you will be very powerfull in small groups and solo probably one of the strongest PVE classes there is.

I agree, the solo'ing power of the engineer is going to be probably the highest of all classes, since engineers are balanced with the idea that their turrets won't be up throughout the entire fight. Especially with the idea of a "killzone", the engineer will be the perfect PvE guy.

You open up with range then finish off with melee. For RVR you do the same and hold your ground if you know you can win. If you need to change positions you run away till you can run behind/side of enemy and blast away with all the grenades and bullets you got!

Three thoughts in response:
1. I'll bet you have at least one type of turret that will have the range of the longest damage spells. That will help in battles fought at range.
2. There will be more pvp objectives based on location in WAR than WoW. People won't always be able to choose where they fight. There will be plenty of keep fights and scenarios in which holding an area is important.
3. You can spec for your rifle to be more effective at range.

Yeah, the engineer is really a threat at any range. Some turrets will be able to shoot at the farthest spell casting range, not to mention his snipe ability; opponents will have to close in some distance in order to kill the engineer, who can keep rebuilding turrets as needed. Once opponents close in, the "kill zone" comes into play, where engineers are the strongest.
Once engineers get a turret or a landmine up, MDPS and tanks will have a very hard time taking them down.

If you watch the newest videos from baltimore, the turrets are now instant cast, and fall from the sky in a crate.
Engineers don't solo pvp. they gather a bunch of friend and in the words of Accipiter: Blow up entire camps. AoE Grinding all the way :P
About running away from the engineer. I doubt this will be a huge issue, rvr is all about group fights. If the entire enemy team fall back everytime you drop a turret they won't last long. HAve your tank knock a fragile down, or cripple him, and he will be dead before the healers get out of your turret range (The engineer even got lots of cripples, knockdowns etc. itself it seems). Furthermore the engineer is more of a defender, and when your holding a battlefield objective or a keep they will have to engage you at your position at some point.
Dare I relate the engineers to animists? Because, that's how it looks in my mind. Set up turrets.. attack... run around..

Engineers will probably be very powerful in solo PvE because their strength is defending a position, and mobs are very predictable and controllable so you could setup, pull the mob, and destroy it.

I can see 3 engineers, 2 healers and a tank running train on instances.
