Orginally posted at the WAR Herald Sanya chimed in with some information about how beta will roll out.

Here are some handy definitions of what the different phases of beta are. Also provide, for the first time, some extremely vague and tentative dates. Some of you have already won betas, and to spare you the whole "having to read" thing, you are listed as "Early Spring 2007." In theory and indeed in schedule, it may be sooner than that, but Sanya is a bitter, cranky, old community weenie who has been through many betas, and she no longer believes in anything she can't grasp in her withered talons.

Alpha: What we are in now. I made the grievous error of calling it a very early beta, for which I am terminally sorry. I will regret that until I die. Alpha does not have anyone playing who does not draw a paycheck from Mythic.

Double Secret Beta: What we will be in "Soon, TM." That is just beyond alpha, and includes people who draw paychecks from Mythic and our partners. Summer 2006

First Stage of Closed Beta (Beta 1): Sometimes called "Friends and Family," somewhat inaccurately, this is a stage where there is actually a game, but it is not usually very complete or even stable for that matter. People who don't work here are in this stage, but usually fewer than a hundred, and they are nearly all such old, old friends that they are often mistaken for employees. Fall 2006

Beta 1.7: After Things Stop Going Boom Every Day: This is the stage you'll start seeing community testers. People who have tested for Mythic for years, or have been otherwise recommended to us as quality volunteer testers, are starting to be included. There is usually a restriction on how many people get in at this point, and often perfectly wonderful people are left out. TENTATIVE DATE: Early 2007

Beta 2: Still closed and covered under NDA, invitees include prize winners, guilds that win the guild contest, and some members of the print and web media - usually the ones we have relationships with. People who work at GW retail shops are getting in here, and we've got some plans for existing Dark Age of Camelot players to be invited to check out their new sibling. There will be up to a thousand people by the end of Beta 2. TENTATIVE DATE: Early Spring 2007

Beta 3: Closed, NDA. This is where Lady Luck will wave her wand. We will be choosing randomly from the giant pool of people who are subscribed to our newsletter. This phase will have thousands of people invited, possibly as many as ten thousand. TENTATIVE DATE: Summer 2007

Final Beta: No NDA. Because there is no NDA, people often refer to this as "open beta." But I wanted to be really clear with you guys - we are not planning the kind of open beta where everyone with internet access can download the game and hop in. That's nutty. Right now, we are tentatively considering having everyone who pre-orders the game invited to this phase of beta. This phase will also invite winners from our big media promotions. TENTATIVE DATE: Summer 2007

I'm wondering if there is a chance they will do a deal with Fileplanet to get the beta around beta time. One of the only reasons I subscribe to that is for all the beta's. :O) But if they plan to give beta to people who pre-order then I doubt it. Ahh well, it's gonna be a long wait.

I guess they were right the newsletter IS the best option of getting in for the most part. Definitely pre-ordering the game now :D .

This may end up being the first game I pre-order. It could happen.

Thanks for the link Miber.

And thanks to Sanya for the definitions.

That said, looking at the timeline even if it is a 'cynical' outlook of dates:

*****************************
SCREAMS OF DESPAIR AND ANGUISH
***************************

So long to wait. So very, very long.

Good to know. There has been other threads where people confuse the terms, and it's good to have them set straight, along with a tentative timeline. Heck, even the devs confuse the terms. Like Paul Barnett saying (http://v2.curse-gaming.com/en/article-186-1-paul-barnett-interview-eswc-speech.html) "Beta test itself will begin open beta I believe at the start of 2007". His definition of open is when the first players get to beta test it, a definition I have seen before several times from other devs.

So glad to see a Beta 3 before final. So many games go Beta 2 -> Open -> Release. That said SWG had Beta 3 -> Final and look what a mess that was, so there is still much oppertunity to screw up.

As for pre-orders, ill definatly be doing that. Blizz gave EU WoW beta's away with their pre-orders which gave us about a months preview. Mind you, DnL did pre-orders too ... haha... The worlds biggest MMO screwup.

It's kinda funny that people claim to have experience playtesting, yet can't seem to define the terms on their own.
In any case, the timeline is very informative, thanks miber.

well its not easy to define "open beta" because a lot of ppl use it differently :)

open beta for anyone that wants to download is how ncsoft tends to use it, ofc "thats just nutty" (I agree!) besides mythic will have plenty of ppl interested to join and don't need to open it to the world.

May be my first preorder as well. Sure want my best chance. Hopefully will be in 1.7 since I found a dupe in DAoC, and it looks like friends & family is going to be a lot smaller now. I'm not sure, usually a Mythic employee can invite a family member or few, but that would be well over 100. Maybe because there are so many more employees now they are not being as free with that.

First, thanks to Sanya for giving us this information. It's more information than most companies would give before the beta has even started. I can't disagree much with the way they are handling the beta, although I don't see how you can call doing an open beta nutty, when it worked beautifully for Blizzard. If you have a quality game then having an open beta will increase the number of people who buy your game by an amazing number. It only doesn't work if your game isn't good enough to hook people in. But I guess requiring pre-orders is pretty much an open beta as pre-orders can be cancelled so it would still be a free trial.

Thanks for the information,

Lack of an "open" beta is seriously troubling. Many people may get turned away from warhammer by not being allowed to play test the game even if only for a week or even weekend.

On the other hand "tens of thousands by newsletter" I'm suddenly pretty confident on getting into beta."

I think it's great to see the time line and what it takes @ each step. That's way better than a carrot dangled somewhere out in the distance.

Well... crap :( Time to pre-order soon. Does it have to be a specific pre-order from a specific website or just any place?

That's a good question that I was wondering about myself. I imagine it will be from any of the major stores that sell games and allow you to pre-order. I was actually thinking that to help prevent people from playing it as a free-trial they might require you to pre-order in a real store, but I think that would piss off online stores like amazon.com and rightfully so. So I'm not sure they could get away with it. And like I stated above, if your game doesn't suck, it's a good thing to let people have a free trial before they purchase.

Don't pre-order, just to throw together a crappy website and you'll be eligible for beta access as part of the "web media".

I think regardless everyone will get a oppertunity to feed at the through

This isn't true. We're not getting media access even though we have a website.

Thanks miber

I figured beta was still a good ways off

im wondering how long the open beta will be - since that is prolly my best chance to get into beta (With pre-ordering)
