So how 'gory' do you think Butchering will be? Yeah it's a teen game so you won't so body parts been ripped off but will it be a simple 'Bend over and hold your hand over it' or will you actually see your character flinging parts off (Similar to the Undead caniballism skill in 'that game'

I don't think it'll be that gory. remember, it is a T game, so dismemberment is probably not likely. Btw, I totally wanted first post. So congratulations. I'm jealous.

I feel it will be similar to WoW's skinning, simple bend over and loot. I'm sure its something a player is going to do enough of that any semi-elaborate animation would become tiresome, so why put the time and resources into if it can be done simpler.

... so why put the time and resources into if it can be done simpler.

That doesn't make much sense. Why put time and resources into, say, a walk animation when everyone just hovering around is much simpler. The point isn't to make a simple game, and sometimes it IS the little things that stick out.

No, I don't think there will be any type of animation, but I wouldn't mind it if there was. If you have to wait like 5 seconds to "butcher" or whatev, then why not have an animation if you gotta wait anyway?

Maybe you misunderstood me or I simple didn't explain it well enough. I'm not saying no animation. I don't expect butchering or even scavenging to be nothing that you write home about, I expect it to become a mundane task after doing it several hundred times. All you really need is for your character to bend down while the butchering and scavenging takes place and play a small sound clip. I see no reason for an animation where your character drops to his knees over a dead corpse, pulls out a butcher knife or two, and begin to widely swing at the corpse in a fevered fit of rage.

If they do add a more complex animation I'm not going to complain, but if it's something simple I'm not losing any sleep either.

It would be cool if all classes and races had different butchering techniques, elves are perfectionists, orcs are brutal; that kind of stuff, but only if there is an animation to it : /

Now that would be nice.
Also, the animation should end with wiping the bloody knife, hatchet or whatever on your sleeve, and some sort of fancy little spinning throw and catch before sheathing it, please.

An animation of pulling out two cleavers, aligning the steel on each other, bending down over the corpse for 1-2 seconds, standing up, wiping off the blades, flipping each in the air once, and sheathing them, would pretty much rock, and not take too long. And it would certainly be better than watching the bar fill and hearing that scraping sound from skinning in that game.

all great ideas.
The sounds associated with this will be what makes or breaks it. Hearing a simple noise will be somewhat of a let down.
Now, Imagine:

Bones cracking, the sounds of organs being squeezed and prodded while muscles and ligaments are ripped and torn. Your character, even though used to it lets out a small belch as his lunch/ breakfast/ consumed dwarf rumbles in his stomach due to the stench. Gasses from the corpse escape in foul ways and you character lets out a disgusted grunt:

Woooph.

I thought these things smelled bad....on the outside.

Probably with an animation of a swinging butcher's cleaver or something, but no flying body parts.

For the love of all that is holy: World of Warcraft! Not "that game", "the unmentionable one", or other such nonsense. You will not catch the bubonic plague by saying World of Warcraft.

I wouldn't hope for something too elaborate. Simply unseathing a skinning knife or whatever sounds efficient. Taking too much time to butcher a mob would be bothersome. Think about AoE killing and what not. Having to wait 5 seconds each for 10 mobs would really make a fool out of me. Think about having to loot each mob (1-3 seconds each) and then having to "fancy" butcher them for 5 seconds each. At the max it would take 8 seconds per mob. That would be way too long. The not so fancy ,but simple, pull out a skinning knife and then kneel over the mob.

Another idea that would be cool ,but I know this won't make it into the game: Maybe the loot from skinning and the loot from the kill could be in the same UI window. It would make it easier. The down side is people would skin before the killer could loot it.

I agree if Im gonna do it say 145,000 times over the game, make one in 500 really cool. That way its amusing but not annoying!

Or making it so that when you are getting a rare loot for the tradeskill the animation is a little more involved so you know right away youre getting a goody?

I personally advocate for ragdoll corpses with the player tearing off limbs and parts in a spray of blood and gore from their opponents with such loot as:

[Elf Head]
[Orc Tusk]
[Human Earlobe]

etc.

Except for Orcs who will just think of it as their version of playdough or my first doctor kit.

Come to think of it Black orcs can only really make any sense by being butchers and apothecaries , even then seeing a Black Orc with a pestle and mortar would be funny. Black Orcs growing flowers = the kind of crazy stuff at the back of The Inevitable City
