This is basically a request from the people here on the forums for any info on imperator, you see, i finally googled it and came up with the IGN site, and the screenshots were intrigueing, and the little background there was about it being "A futre alternate univers where Rome never crumbled" (not a quote) which was a lot like a novel i'd read a while ago called 'Roma Eterna' (i can't remember the author).
I do understand that the game has been put on hold, it is just that the screenshots and the tiny bit of background has really intrigued me.
Oh, and if by any chance anyone from mythic sees this, what i've seen i've been very impressed by, if that one got scrapped then WAR is going to be awesome.
But basically any info as in background, 'fluff' or anything like that would be hugely appreciated.
Imerator is scrapped for the moment by mythic and all the personnel working on it have been transferred to help on Warhammer

I liked the screenshots I saw, wasn't too keen on the game concepts though.

Ah, Imperator! I was a member of VoxPlebis (the first Imperator fansite and was also led by Garthilk). I'll try to sum the basis of Imperator quickly:
There are thing sometimes called 'Crux Points' in our history. These are times where just one tiny change could modify history as we know it. In the universe of Imperator, the largest Crux Point change was that involving the death of Geramicus, adopted son of the Roman Emperor Tiberius and brother of the later emperor Claudius. In history Geramicus was killed as Tiberius feared he was plotting against him (which he was not). But in Imperator's world, Claudius managed to intercept the order coming from Tiberius and warn his brother. Geramicus (on Claudius' suggestion) faked his own death, and when he was brought back to Rome for his funeral, he led an uprising against his father and restored the Republic.
In the games time, it is 1800-some AD, with Rome in a star-spanning Republic. But all is not good. Thirty (I'm not certain of the number right now) years ago, the Mayans betrayed Earth and left for the stars. They have technology light-years ahead of even Rome, and their numbers are many. This is not a time of soldiers, it is a time of Heroes.
In Imperator, your character is a Viritori, the elite of Roman arms. Races are human, A-Life (robot with human or near-human intelligence) and a genetically engineered one (I forget what its called). Classes are more open, such as Trooper (Tank) and Grenadier (explosives and heavy weapons). Levels go from one to 100. With most of the game being PvE against the Mayans, PvP isn't neglected too much. We know the devs were going to use the Coliseum for something. :)
Also note that it’s postponed. While it won’t be coming out for a while and production on it has been paused, it isn’t canned. I don’t know why the media makes it seem that Mythic canned it...

As for the reasons of its postponement, no one but the devs really know. My thought is that they just had too much going on. They had three teams running for a while. One on DAoC, one on Imperator's development and another working on WAR.
Two's company, threes a crowd. I think Mythic just couldn't do three at once (I can't blame them, I'm terrible at multitasking). DAoC was/is their primary money maker, and the rights to WarHammer were coveted. So, they put Imperator on the backburner since it was the only one that could wait.
That's my guess, at least.

I played the working demo for Imperator at E3 last year, it was kinda fun :) .
The game started out with your Recruit guy (who represented the best of the best in Roman society) basically crash landing on some planet that the Mayans were attacking.
The graphics were very cool, and you could tell they were using the same engine for DAoC. The UI was pretty much the same, expect more modern looking to reflect the Sci-Fi nature of the game.
There was lots of instance-based questy stuff. You pick up missions from a central guy, and then run around killing stuff.
There was almost no melee combat, everything was technically ranged. The one class with a close-quarters melee attack was kinda overpowered, heh.

Interesting....
Iwonder if they are thinking of using WAR based RvR techniques when they pick Imperator back up, cause im sure a lot of people would want to play as the mayans. but eh.
And close quarters melee would be effective when all armour etc. is based around ranged weapons.
Thanks Seldaren

hmmm`?..if Imperator is uh, postponed, i guess it will come some time after W.A.R?...but wouldnt that just mean extra competition for W.A.R? wouldnt that be a bit bad or is it just me?

Postponed is just a fancy term, I would be surprised if it ever saw the light of day. Or at least for a few years after WAR comes out.

Impression I have is similar to Kilrogg. Odds are against it coming out. If they look at doing it again in 2 to 3 years I be surpise if they didnt scrap and start all over with a new engine and game idea since by then it would be what? 4 to 5 years old engine that didnt sound like it was complete in the first place.

They said they put it on hold because it wasn't coming to be the quality game they wanted it to be- at least thats what I got from all the messages.

Same feeling I have. And if they wait to long, they might as well just start the game over, because it will be way to out of date. WAR isn't out until sometime in 07, so if they waited a couple of year after that to release it it would be pretty old.
