Basicly I'm looking for an advanced run down of how cultivation works. More then the put the seed in the slot and press go that is posted up everywhere, I want more of a Cultivators diary of how they got seeds at all stages and if the plant gives back seeds of the same type ect. How do nutrients and water effect the plants. (faster, better, different kinds of results?) Are soils and water cans reuseable? Spare no detail, I want to know what I'm getting into if I pick this profession up.

I am looking for the same info... I have gotten my Cultivation skill up to 34 (not high but I have figured some stuff out) and been mailing stuff that i butcher or scavage with my other chars.
From what I have found out, you dont have to add anything other than the seed or spore to start it and makes it a cheep way to skill up, but with some soil or water I have hit some crits that give me the standard fished product back and the seeds back. (But its rare, even if you add all 3 bonuses)
Also it takes a while since once you start the seed it takes 3mins... you get minus 10 secs to the process per soil, water and nutrient. And you only get to start with one plot to grow in, not sure what skill or item or what you need to get the others (there are 4)
I wish I could give you more detail, I have been looking around online and asking in game on help since I started but there is nothing out there. Not even in the ToK or in-game help :(
Good Luck

Yes, there seems to be a distinct lack of information on cultivating. But no worries, we'll figure it out. :)
I got up to level 19 so far. I've been using water, soil, and nutrients every time. I guess you can grind up the skill cheaper by not using those items. :)

You can buy seeds and everything else from a merchant. They also fall as drops and are quest rewards.
On a critical success you get back the seed as well as one or more of whatever you grow. Elven Parsley always give back the seed but on a critical, it you gives a plant too. Some variety in what plant you get.
Soils, Water, and Nutrients are used to speed up the process. 10% faster for each one you use. Some people claim that they also increase you chance of criticals. This is unproven and frankly unprovable.
Soils etc are one use only. They are not costly (15 coppers) at least at first.

thats pretty costly when you have abilities (were very expensive before PW) and gear to buy. I wouldnt be spending 54c every crap plant to make it 30% faster when I even have to put it all in at the right intervals. If the ingredients do improve critical chance, its not by much and from what Ive seen you arent going to get anything amazing from seeds which is pretty dissapointing when you think about how elaborate this setup is.
Cultivating could be mad fun and I would do it again, but some of the mechanics of it just need to be more fun and it would be nice to know what's going on with the ingredients in that pot....

You make really good money and what not, for the 1st 50 or so levels I would not even bother to use the extra stuff unless you just want to play around with stuff. At least I do not feel it is worth the extra effort until then.

I did not find it expensive over the PW. I got all my abilities (up to lvl 13), the renown gear and did a fair amount of cultivating. At the end of the weekend I still had 2 GP left.

Quite easy to prove old chap, all you need is some basic statistics :) .
Do two things:
Cultivate 80 plants without any additives
Cultivate 80 plants with EVERY additive, to ensure that youre results are obvious (not necessarily the best) you can use as many as you can. However, you will not be able to whether each component has an equal or inequal affect. That would require more work. Similar experiment with a few more added categories, say, soil+water or soil+nutrients. Any combination would work. But lets stick with the most basic right now, just two categories.
This should be enough to get some statistically significant results. The goal is to get a statistically significant number of crits (the general rule is 35-40 is the 'official' bare minimum for statistical significance when doing a simple calculation like this, but I like to go lower, obviously 80 won't yield 40 crits O_o. Usually getting 15 or 20 crits in each category is enough.) Do some averaging. If you find that you do not get a difference between the twos crit chance, you can tell that the additives are obviously working to change them instead of just speeding up the planting. Will also work to tell whether or not it also decreases your chance of crit failing, use the same results but look at crit fail instead of crit success.
Another way to do it would be with less repetition (the number of plantings) and more calculating (I would assign a crit fail=1, normal=3, crit success=4 or something like that.) Just add all of em up and average. That should give you usable results for half the repetition, prolly less accurate though, I don't remember that much about stat.
Too much work? Close to doing it but don't like the work involved? Just play until Rank 15 or something, go back and buy all the ingredients you need. Chump change at this point.
Considering how much you guys hate Cultivating, let alone doing Stat work on it, I doubt any of you will do this :). If you do, let us all know though, please XD. I'm not going to do it b/c someone else eventually will and I'm too lazy and happy with cultivating already.
Theoretically, if you had the time and devotion (or a bot XD) You could calculate all stats for all potions. I can't even begin to comprehend the amount of testing required though...

Been using the same green brown shorenuts for 5 iterations now, with no extra ingredients and every time I get a brown shorenut and its seed back...cultivating level 34...
