View Full Version : Subpar gathering?

Biggest problem I have with butchering is that it seems subpar to scavenging as a cash skill. Early on, the gathering skills are critical for earning those important silvers you need for gear and training.
Unfortunately, grinding humanoids seems to be much more efficient for cash gathering and scavenging is therefore the skill of choice.
Hopefully this will mean a better market for those who develope butchering for tradeskill use (as intended), but initially it seems the wrong choice.

ya ill agree you should get more loot from butchery and should be able to loot more mobs
but seriously becouse its lame the prices for high lvl butchery items will be INSANE and you will make a ton of cash with this later on especaly if your running lots of instances and stuff

Honestly, why CAN'T we butcher humanoids? Seems like human skulls would be a valuable resource for talisman making, at least.

Typical, coming from a Marauder.
I suppose you might not have any qualms about butchering humanoids, but us civilised races . . .

Sentients?
They are all animals, and should be butcherable.

*sigh* Just because this is a game, please don't turn this into a "let me do what I want because I'm evil" type thing, OK? I hate to make an example in real life, but come on, just think about it will you? The army doesn't go out and kill people then butcher the corpses and sell them for meat. No army does that. It's the same reason you, personally, won't go out into the world, kill someone and butcher their corpse. There are legal consequences for those actions and it is, hopefully, against your ethics as a person to do so.
Mythic has 2 gathering skills. One of them allows you to retrieve materials for craft via animal corpses. The other allows you to search the pockets of your human victims for trinkets to use in crafting. They decided to name these two skills "butchering" and "scavenging". Let's just accept it and leave it at that.
Now, as for if Butchering is subpar... no it's not subpar. I have several characters with various skills and such and I've done some experimenting and what not...
- Both Scavenging and Butchering can return items that have no sell value to a merchant, but have sell value to a player.
- Scavenging gives you curios that you can sell to talisman makers.
- Butchering gives you main ingredients to sell to alchemists.
- Scavenging gives you waters (stabilizers) for apothecary and water/soil for cultivating.
- Butchering gives you stabilizers for apothecary and nutrients for cultivating.
There are some potions that can only be created from butchered materials. Off the top of my head the two of note are: Fiery Explosion and Damage Absorption. Fiery Explosion potions are not so cool, but Damage Absorption are pretty nice-- it's basically an Archmage damage shield in a bottle. (415 or so damage absorbed, lasts for 10 sec).
The only difference between the two is who you are selling your wares to. If you go Apothecary/Butchering you can make a vast majority of any potion Apothecary/Cultivating can do plus a few it can't. If you go Talisman Making/Scavenging you can get curios, but you're still going to need to buy your fragments and essences from someone who can salvage or you can't make crap. Going Apothecary with Butchering makes you much more self sufficient.
There are plenty of animals in the world to level off of and there are kill collectors everywhere who will allow you to kill animals, butcher them for ingredients for potions and get extra XP for it. If you don't like to kill animals, don't pick butchering. It's that simple. No one is telling you you have to take butchering.

After the 9/12 patch, you can butcher humanoids.

This is not true. I have butchering and have not been able to butcher humanoids.
The biggest drawback to butchering is that you cannot do it while doing rvr. Even if you figure pve you will be fighting beasts half the time and sentients half the time, in rvr you fight humanoids 100% of the time. This means that the hardcore rvr players, who level primarily through pvp they get penalized with their skill. They have to pve to level up and use it.
They need to make some change to butchering, otherwise you won't see very many of them.

Obviously you need to kill more White Lions/Squig Herders. :D

That's just it, I have tried to butcher white lions and it doesn't work. Anybody else able to butcher squigs or lions while pvping?

Butchered a squig and some magus demons last night. *Crusty Squig Bits* was my first loot from this, lol.

Unfortunately we aren't allowed to butcher our own squigs when they die (believe me, I tried). And for the record NO, you can't butcher humanoid mobs in the game currently.

Yeah, you can't butcher humanoids. It's also true that you won't make as much money with Butchering than with Scavenging... But two things:
1) So what? I've never run out of money. Almost 20 levels in (Beta, obviously. Not nearly as advanced now...) and cash for training and gear has never been an issue, not even after I blew my wad on basic crafting materials to spam potions.
2) Supply and demand. Butchering can supply things that Scavenging can't. Once people really start playing they'll need the items that can't be obtained via Scavenging. Since everyone's a Scavenger, this means profit.
As a final point, which isn't very strong admittedly so I didn't count it as Point #3, Butchering doesn't just cater to Apothecaries. Butchering also has a market with Cultivators in that Butchering can deliver some very potent nutrients. So that's more people to whom you can sell.

I'm kinda glad that the butchery forum is so sparse. I plan on going butchery, and I'm sure my items will be worth money the less butchers there are. I'm really going to need those damage absorb potions as I'm going to roll a chosen (my game should get here monday or tuesday 9/22-23) and I'm speccing for block and parry so that damage absorb will be good for the attacks that get through, plus I can use those bomb potions for ranged attacks; unless they're running, then I'll just drop an axe in their back.

I'm sure its a bug, but some sentient creatures can be butchered. I was getting daemon flesh off gobbos in a Dwarf Chp.11 PQ.
I can confirm the squig pets. I'm not sure if the loot scales with the squigs' level though.

This is probably a good idea. I mean, imagine what it would be like if a Dark Elf Butcher/Apoth suddenly discovered that Goblins provide an amazing reagent. "Oops, sorry wrong target" or "Ran out of Soul Essence, couldn't heal" "But as long as you're dead....*butchers*" :p

something that is making me hesitant is that I hear in RvR the scavenge loot is amazing... where is the butcher love?

Wow. You need to work on your sense of humor. People were mostly joking. Although butchering humans for their skulls would be pretty sweet! (And I'm a high elf.)

This is actually about the only valid point made in a mostly pvp game a skill that can only be raised in pve seems a little out of place.
As to Souldrake's post lol
he mentions its only a game and then goes on to legal consequences and compares it to RL war
Funny :)
Please be aware I believe there a legal consequences to fireballing someone in real life
:evil:I vote for humanoid butchering just so i can see what makes up Souldrakes brain:evil::evil:

You should be able to butcher beastmen, scaven mobs, and other animal type humanoids. You kill a ton of thoes. Butcher and scavenge, cus they're BEAST - MEN. Also trolls and sprites/dryads.
