Does Cultivating have to be used with Apothecary or will salvaging work? I hate the whole grow your plant process with Apothecary. In 20+ higher areas do you get access to plants with out having to grow them?

Well you will get alot of seeds trough scavenging, but you will need someone with cultivating to grow them for you. You will also get containers trough salvaging.
I think the problem is that the majority that picks up cultivating will also get apothecary. Thus they won't be selling the plants they grow. I don't think you will have problems getting help from guildis/friends to grow them for you though. Especially if you can give them a few free containers that you got from scavenging.
You won't find NPCs that sell high end stuff though. That thing you saw in the early levels is just to help levelling it up.

I imagine the AH will help with getting certain plants. also it isn't to hard to lvl up on a twink. At least from what I can tell. But it takes time to make crops worth.

I just hated growing them and the whole process. One thing and most likely the only thing I would have taken from any MMO is finding stuff.. Ah well I guess I'll just have to learn to like it.. Scavaging was fun and helps make a few coin but I am a huge pot user in pve-pvp ..
I know, its cheep but it works.

I used butchering in the PW and I got tons of main ingredients, then I found an NPC that sold stabalizing ingredients, so I was all set to make pots. Now the best ingredints are prolly not sold at NPCs but you will be able to create potions with gathering skills other than cultivating.
The best option (or atleast the one that I'm going to use) is:
main character with apothocary and scavaging\butchering (havent decided yet)
alt character (which I level to r10 right away) with apothocary\cultivation
this way I can level gathering skills on both characters by buying & trading seeds to my alt to grow (increasing his cultivating level without actually leveling him if i dont feel like it) and my main characters gathering skill will level automatically as I play it normally as I level.
This way I have the best of bother worlds

I'm either taking Magical Salvage and Talisman Making or Cultivation and Apothecary. I really hate my killing spree (as much of one as a Black Orc can manage anyway) being interrupted by having to spend 5 seconds after every kill re-looting the body and I really wish there was an "Auto-loot all" function so I would have to make that second click when I'm just normal-looting a body.
Those 5 extra seconds cost a fair amount of morale, and eat away at time on whatever buffs I have running from the combat, and, as mentioned, kill my killing spree. So in general I'd just rather have gathering professions I can deal with along with my crafting profession, in town, where I'm not having my combats broken up.

It depends on what you want to make. I took butchering and sat at the Burning Windmill PQ and took apart all the horrors, nothing but Apoc stuff to make firey potions, elemental resistance. Wolfs mostly give restoration items and boars tend to drop stablizing ingredients.

Cultivation is not a must, I find that having scavenging as my gathering is good for apothecaries. The majority of main ingredients I get from scavenging make health pots, other make spirit res, armor buff, and"thorns" pots. Since I am an Eng the health pots help alot. Also I get alot of potion stablizers from scavenging which helps alot with apothecaries. Unfortunately I don't other secondary ingredients but health pots don't need increased duration.

I picked up scavenging just to see what it was all about and found that I was getting a ton of apoth mats, so I picked up apoth as well. I'm a ironbreaker so I always have my pots on cooldown when I'm beating on a group of greeners haha. Great combo if you ask me.

BTW, that linked mod is for WAR. Extracts into the same folder as you would for WoW. Aliiane (creator) is our resident mod god.

butchering can get you virtually all the same potions and more that I found so far vs cultivating.

One more for Butchering. I'll probably get Cultivation on a alt though.

I found the cultivation process fun, I guess Il stick to it. Hope we get enough of all proffessions, so that 1 material won't constantly be missing...
So far cultivation seems to be the one people are hating on the most, so thats the one Il take

I have a pair. Scav/TM, Cult/Apoth. Third alt will likely have Salvage or Butchery with no crafting.
And if you think about it, there is a bit of an imbalance. 4 gather, 2 craft, and you can only take one of each.
