View Full Version : How to turn on AA and AF

since many people have INSISTED that you cant use these functions in the beta I decided to write a little guide for those of you using Nvidia cars(I'm sure ATI is similar)

AA and AF are not part part of the graphics quality settings, they are post processing features of your graphics cards and are available on just about every game even if the game settings dont turn them on... you can

1. open the Nvidia control panel
2. Under "view" select advanced
3. Under 3d settings in the task window, select "manage 3d settings"
4. Under the Program settings tab, click the Add button
5. locate where you installed war.exe, select it, then click ok
6. select desired anisotropic filtering level
7. turn antialiasing to "Override application setting"
8. select desired AA level
9. you can also turn on Texture filtering - anisotropic sample optimization if you desire.

there... now no one can post any more screenshots with tons of jagged lines ;)

Good post, and yes this improves performance a lot.

Note: they added different video setting options since the preview weekend.

6) Added new Graphics Settings and seeking more feedback from testers to guide future improvements. You asked for it, you got it. Well, in all fairness we were going to put these in anyway but it never hurts to nudge us a bit at times.MJB (http://www.warhammeralliance.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1266189)

they've also fixed the caching of textures so that now your dear forced AF will actually do something.

Its a beta. You shouldnt be introducing external factors that could be causing bugs.

In retail its fine but this is a beta and you should be helping Mythic not causing them problems by stuffing them around by forcing settings that the game might not yet be supporting properly.

wrong wrong wrong, actually whatever you do is helping mythic to see if there arent problems with ahrdware etc,

Especially that close to release, where problems like this really start to matter. If the game won't run stable with AA/AF forced through the device driver, the graphics engine is severely broken.

Cant seem to get my AA and AF forced on my ati. Yes I go to catalyst control and uncheck "use application settings" but nothing happens.

Any fix for this?

Which it does. Seems like the ATI software is not as good at overriding application settings though as the nVidia one.

This is one of the primary reasons I don't use ATI cards. I can't stand their drivers. They're not as bad as they used to be, granted, but they're still inferior to nVidia, especially under Linux, which matters to me since I dual boot.

Are you moving the slider so to select different levels of AA or AF ?

I pointed this thread to my brother who is in the midst of buying a brand new ATI card. Apparently if you want to force AA/AF in the Catalyst drivers there are a few tricks you can do.

1) First off, if it is not working, disable the Catalyst AI. Apparently the Catalyst AI tries to optimize the card for the game, and will accept flags from the game defining what is, and is not, acceptable - despite whatever you may set. In this case, it is ignoring your forced AA/AF settings.

2) I found this one to be strange, but anyways... Another "hack" to prevent the driver override that I described above is to rename your game exe to "Oblivion.exe". *shrug* Don't ask my why - smarter people than I testify to its effectiveness.

renaming doesn't work for MMO which uses a launcher.. in this case warpatch.exe will launch the file war.exe so there is no way to rename war.exe (this is the actual game client)

Perhaps rename the application and make a shortcut called war.exe (not war.exe.lnk). Changing the extension only changes default application launches, not the usability of the file (for instance, rename a .JPG to .DOC and then open it manually in a picture viewer... it still works). I'm not SURE this would work, and am at work and cannot try it, but hey... someone take the ball and run with it dangit!

Thanks for all the replies Iam glad Iam not the only one seeing the problem. I am going to post some screenshots so you guys can understand a little more what I mean. The settings are on high and remember the biggest problem isnt that the graphics look like this as much as the animations. Some people addressed how everything is choppy and unresponsive.

and another one

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/4616/serraef000on8.jpg

Just want to know if this is what they were going for or if it should get better upon release. For all those saying this game looks better than other MMO', Iam sorry I don't understand.

Also remember not flaming the game just want to know. God knows I want a new MMO to play thats actually good, but its hard to get into a game that looks and feels like this at the moment.
These pics are after todays patch (09-08-08)

Doesn't work for me. Can't start the WAR.exe directly due to authentication problems, and when the warpatch.exe starts WAR.exe the AA/AF doesn't seem to even appear in the game, it's still the same jaggy thing.

I've tried keeping the options on for just one of the files, and for both of them, but it just doesn't appear to be working.

Any solution for this, or will we have to wait till WAR is released, along with the improved graphical options I'm seriously hoping for?

I've known how to force AA/AF using the NVIDIA Control Panel for a while, though the instructions in this thread helped to refresh my memory.

With high AA and AF settings enabled, WAR looks amazing, much better than without them. Not perfect, mind you, but then what is? Except a goblin climbing inside of a squig, naturally.

I'm sorry to hear about ATI (and other?) users' problems, but I'm sure it will get sorted and, believe me, it will impress you once you've got your settings straight.

So I tried enabling the AA and AF, and the game crashed like 2-3 mins into the game.. I am using an Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT card on my laptop. I've tried to find driver updates for this but as this is a laptop, there are none.. Any help appreciated!

Give 177.92 beta for Xp (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_177.92_beta.html) a try.

Those drivers are great, but have one fatal flaw. AA in SPORE doesnt work in the sporepedia, editors, and other wierd small areas anymore :S
Works in War though, but so did older drivers too. AF doesnt work in War for me though, still blurry textures at a distance, they wont load properly so the AF has nothing to work with ;/

i did it in beta , added it myself that is, but it kept dissappearing afterwards. i ended up having to change the AA and AF in the global settings and it worked a treat.

Umm... I opened the Nvidia control panel... but there's no "view".

Just:
nView display settings
digital flat panel settings
performance &quality settings
color correction
video overlay settings
tools
nvrotate
temp settings
screen resolution & refresh rates.

I found AA and AF setting under Performance and Quality settings, but no where to add war.exe

OMG Thanks to the OP. I had just put down about $550 for a new core 2 duo processor, an overclocked nvidia 8800GT card, new motherboard and power supply.......and then I played warhammer online. Great game, not so great graphics. BUT I did what you suggested and it's just amazing how different the quality is now. Makes me glad I upgraded, I was starting to regret it. On top of that, the performance on my machine was just remarkable, tho i still need to try out some rvr with the new settings...

Thanks again!

ok here's some screenshot with 16x AA & AF kinda laggy when everything loads at first so I might lower it down and test it. although I might do the tweaking once th queque on server are not too high.

EDIT: well after tweaking I ended up changing only the AA to 4x. IMO there isnt much difference turning AF & AA at maximum.

Its better since I dont experience lag during RvR and getting an average of 30fps in it.

I usually settle on 2x or 4x in most games, WAR included, after that I can't see the difference, but the 0x standard is awful. I don't understand why AA isn't in the menus in the first place. The game looks stunning with it on. :)

I have a 4850 ATI card and for some reason if I turn on AA and/or AF via the Catalyst thing, although I do get antialising and better looking texture filtering, character models become slightly transparent.

So all players and npc's gain a ghostly translucency, making them grimace terribly as you can see their teeth through their lips. So although the game world looks better, it's inhabited by scary ghosts making it look significantly worse overall. :P

Any one else seen this or know how to fix it? I've got the latest catalyst drivers from the ATI site (17th september, IIRC).
