View Full Version : Dwarves and Ale

Many moons ago when I played EQ, there was one feature I really enjoyed that seems to have been overlooked by future developers...ALE!

In EQ, getting your character drunk was not just a fluff effect. You increased your character's strength, while blurring your vision and making movement difficult.

This not only added a reason to drink ale, it also added alot to make gameplay interesting - not to mention a hell of a lot funnier. I'd like to see something like this for Dwarves (if not others) in WAR. What do you guys think?

All Hail To The Ale!

Great idea halfhand! I too have missed this nice little side-effect of ale consumption in EQ. I would really like to see this incorporated into WAR. Perhaps different effects from Bugman's special brews?

You could get drunk in WoW as well, with similar affects, it was a nice touch I thought, especially with drunken duels thrown in.

Really? I didn't know the WoW drinks had similar effects.

I already do this while playing all games anyway. My vision gets blurry and my speach gets slurred. But it doesn't seem to improve my character at all.

To tell the truth, it doesn't improve my forum posting either...I've proof read this thing about 10 times. I hope it's right this time.

Sounds like a great idea. Getting smashed in Wow was fun when your words were slurred and bubbles came out of your mouth and you not beign able to run in a straight line. Got abit annoying in ZG though when those spiders stung ya and you keep falling over and trying to heal lol!

Good idea though

Only some drinks would improve actual stats.

Yeah only some drinks actually improved stats. In EQ the more you drank, of course the more smashed you became but also the stronger you became and if Im not mistaken the more hitpoints you could get. In response your intelligence and dexterity went down considerably. It was a neat way to get extra loot to the vendors or auctions. If you had too much loot and you couldnt move, all you had to do was down several bottles and you had enough strength to move normally now.

Yeah your vision would blur (vision blur in EQ is still the best hands down) but you could make your way to wherever you were going. If you had enough alcohol tolerance skill you could improve the positive stat gain while reducing the negative effects, but in true EQ style you had to drink over and over to improve the stat which led to TONS of drunken parties outside city gates.

I used the alcohol method on my troll shadow knight in the Oasis of Marr to haul in tons and tons of finesteel and other loot left behind from the undead and spectre trains to rake in the platinum. :D

Dwarves in my mind get pissed off when they drink. If you drink ale you should get to do more hits per minute. Or since we drink ale so much it could be a krazy health potion that engineer's can make?

Well theres been some joking references to ale uses in the game, like dwarfs healing from ale, and running booze to injured reinforcements to get them back in shape for a good fight. :P

I really wouldnt mind if they introduced taverns where if you got drunk you could join in on a FFA drunken brawl till you were knocked out - a sort of King of the Keg kind of thing. :P

Drunken brawls!

That reminds me, Age of Conan is having FFA non-lethal PvP brawls in all their taverns, where you can through fist and furniture and all sorts. How much of that idea could Myhtic steal before the lawyers come 'round?

You could have drunken pit fights? Like ogres except without the killing and eating your opponent. You could pick up random weapons in the pit thrown in by outsiders like chair's table legs ext.

It could be a form of gambling!

the only problem with that is that dwarfs will have to spend lots of gold just to get tipsy:p

Dwarves don't get "tipsy".

They get addled, boozy, buzzed, crocked, lit, loaded, stewed, merry, irrigated, lubricated, hammered, smashed, pissed and just plain drunk...but never "tipsy".

I think it should be free to get tipsy if it's for gambling purposes. If you have a disagreement with somebody you can have a drunken fight for that particular item. In a drunken beer fight "Stats" or "armour" won't matter because you wouldn't wear full body armour to a brewery or bring your weapon (That's not what you'd do in Real life nyway) I love the idea of people throwing a chair to you to smash over your opponents head.

Only thing is elves can't do it. a manly beer would kill them instantly!

If I remember correctly if you drank in EQ it also made you better at fishing.

But yeah, I'd love to see similar effects in WAR.

I demand we have a drinking skill, so we can have many drinking contests! Last dwarf standing!!!

And it is no joke running ale to revive troops ;) A dwarf can fight for a whole month with nothing in his belly other than a barrel of bugmans!

I would love to see beer add to your strength and fear rolls (if there is a fear aspect in the game) but subtract to your agility and make your screen all blurry! And of course make your character sway like a fool the more the drinks.

It should also randomly make monsters look weaker than they actually are, so you dont know if you are charging in to fight a level 10 puppy, or a level 30 Hound of Chaos!!!
Oh the humour :p

I think I've discussed this before. I hope Mythic doesn't skimp on this because it's not a drinking simulation type game. Yeah it's WAR, but avatar drunkenness is a good thing right?

The world is just not right without a drunken dwarf somewhere in it.

As long as it doesn't distract from our precious RvR.

As of right now I don't think anything will take away from the RvR. I think it would add more flavor to it. Imagine a drunken slayer out on the battlefield, killing everything in sight and quite possibly himself for that matter. It would be awesome.

It wouldnt really mess with RvR in my opinion, its nice to flesh the game out tho so theres more depth. Games like CoH have suffered from lack of it.

If they put drunkeness in the game, will they have to put in hangovers as well? :-?

Here's an extract from an old GW regiment of renown box set, which shows their attitude towards the whole thing. Let's hope we see more of the same in WAR:

Battlecry
The old Ranger battlecry, 'Mhinz Abeir', with the response 'Zyor Rond' was maintained by the new Rangers, but a new battlecry was also used, consisting of the cry 'Ayt Peinz' and the response 'Khaari'. Both cries seem to be in an arcane Dwarfen tongue, and their meaning is unknown.

Deeds
The story of Bugman's survival and his long journey to Karak-Varn is the subject of a number of epic poems and drinking songs. The development of Bugman's Castle XXXXXXXXX, a special brew to celebrate the reforming of the Rangers, is considered a great achievement, ranking alongside the Battle of Hangover Hill, when the Rangers destroyed a large Goblin ambush force despite the fact that an impromptu drinking match had finished scant hours before the attack.

If you didn't get the battlecry puns:
Minz Abeir = Miine's a beer
Zyor Rond = It's your round
Ayt Peinz = Eight pints

Brilliant chants! ;)
Hmm hangovers... makes you foul tempered and more vunerable to mental/magical attacks!!! ;)

I always liked the blurred sight effects and slurred speech effects from alchohol in WoW (as I recall booze didnt alter your skills, but I could be wrong).

Id like to see drinking in WAR, but I think it should be part of the scenery and not directly impact PvP or PvE. I always think its a good idea to facilitate nonquesting or non-PvP activities in a MMO. An example would be a large beer hall for dwarves, where they can sit and chat and maybe even play a mini-game of chess or something - those little touches add a lot to the longevity of a game.

As a note people can try out in WoW.. Is ALL mobs look to be weaker then they actually are when your drunk, check their levels after you hit the booze a bit. I dont recall offhand if your stats were bounced around. Dont believe so tho.

No. Both forms are accepted.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary entry: Inflected Form(s): plural dwarfs /'dworfs /; also dwarves /'dworvz/

Also from Wikipedia's write-up on dwarves: The plural of the word dwarf was historically spelled dwarfs, but fantasy author J. R. R. Tolkien used the plural dwarves, which has entered general usage. However, the older spelling is still actively used.

I have always used 'dwarves' and will continue to do so. But I do realize that GW uses 'dwarfs.'

So LoTR made Dwarfs to Dwarves, but the correct spelling in GW and general style is Dwarfs? :P

Just razzing ya no worries, personally dont care - but I consider "dwarfs" to be proper for WH personally.

Women get tipsy. Dwarfs get "unable to stand on their feet"-drunk.

Snorri

Aye, but it takes a lot of beer to get us to that stage.

If a man downed four tankards of ale, a dwarf could down 10 and be no more intoxicated.

Dwarfs love their ale, but they can handel it like no other :p
We are all drunk because we just drink so much! 30 beers a day!
