View Full Version : We get weaker as we level?

I don't know if the statistics on the WarWiki are correct. I have to assume it's not, but hopefully someone can enlighten me.
Let's take a look at our defensive stats.
Armor:
Armor / (Level * 1.1) = +% Damage Reduction
Just from this formula we can see that as our level goes up so does our divisor, which means our damage reduction is REDUCED.
Quick example. You just hit 21 and pick up your new set of armor. Full set gives you an armor rating of 1060.
1060/ (21 * 1.1) = 45.9. Okay that looks good, you take about half the damage given, just right for a tank.
Then you go up a couple levels, with no change to your gear since you already have the best you can find for your level.
1060/ (23 * 1.1) = 41.9 So just by gaining two levels you lose 4% reduction.
Now I don't necessarily think your armor should go up as you level, but it certainly shouldn't drop.
And roughly this same formula is applied to all our defensive stats. Using level as part of the divisor, which will only lower the final result.
Now I'm actually hoping someone's gonna tell me I'm a fool and that the "level" stat in that formula is actually attackers level. Or that the dividend and divisor are just transposed. Anything that'll help make sense of it.

Thats how it is in most MMOS, you outgrow your gear. So a tank set bought at 20 will absorb more damage than at 29.
You gotta keep replacing your gear.

It was a similar formula in that other mmo (don't flame me i quit that POS ages ago):
Wow formula: %Reduction = (Armor / ([85 * Enemy_Level] + Armor + 400)) * 100
It is the enemy's level that is taken into consideration, so as you level and fight higher level mobs your gear becomes less effective. Each level though, you will get more health and better gear.
Your damage reduction wont drop if you continue to fight lower level mobs though.

Outgrowing your gear means the gear doesn't scale up with you, not your gear gets increasingly worse.

That's sort of what I was thinking. It makes sense that all defensive abilities refer to the attackers level rather than the subjects. It's specifically stated to work that way for resistances, but not for dodge, parry, armor, etc.

This allows for tanks to have high damage mitigation even at early levels, while still needing to upgrade their gear as they progress. If it didn't scale down as you went up, then they'd have low mitigation early on, and not be very effective at their job.

We're not talking about a tank mechanic here, it's armor mitigation across the board. And even at lower levels, if you have the same armor on, you're weaker at level 2 than you were at level 1.

If you're talking about mitigation, you're talking about tanking, period. And no, I'm not going to be wearing plate that feels like cloth at level 8 so that you don't have to replace your armour.
Guess what? If you get gear for a level 2 when you hit that level instead of ignoring your gear, you'll be even stronger! :o

So you're just going to get a whole new set of armor at every level? I don't really think that's even possible but I truly hope that works out for you.
In the meantime I'm going to be here trying to figure out this mechanic because it doesn't really make sense to me that if I'm level 10 wearing level one armor, I will take significantly more damage than a level 1 wearing level 1 armor.
Either you haven't really put a lot of thought into the mechanic, or you just like making condescending posts.

Maybe because it is rather easy to get better gear by doing just about anything in the game other than picking your nose (might be a tome unlock for that), you are expected to replace your gear as you level. Honestly, if you have level 1 gear at level 10, you are doing something horribly wrong. Also, even one level increase in your armor can easily double and sometimes triple the armor rating for that part of the body. So it appears that the mechanic is designed for you to replace your armor as you level.

Have you even played the game? By the time you get your renown gear you're not going to replace it for several levels. Not because you're not trying, but because it's the best set you'll find.
As you level everything else around you gets tougher and hits harder. That's why you upgrade your gear.
I really don't want to keep repeating the same thing to everyone who happens in here and decides to make a "get new gear noob" comment, so this will be the last of those. Obviously some people just don't understand. But if anyone has any real insight into the mechanic I'd still love to talk more about that.

It is the attackers level. The tooltip is based on your level but the actual effect of their attack vs. your armor is based on their level.
There is a post in the Basic Statistic Functions thread that shows this: As you level up the same old mobs you used to fight do not start to hit you harder.

I kinda figured that had to be the case but couldn't find anything to actually confirm it. Thanks for the heads up mate.

Actually, I have played the game and I managed to upgrade my renown gear every 2 to 3 levels. RR4 at level 8, RR6 at 10, etc. Obviously some people don't understand, and it seems to be you, but thanks for being so civil and not jumping to conclusions and pulling out the worthless "have you even played" card because you had nothing better to say. And 2-3 levels would be a few levels, your example of level 1 gear on a level 10 was just absurd.

Its a very logical system. Armor only protects 100% at its intended level, and as you level up and face more powerful foes your armor protects you less and less.
If you'd have a set at level 5 that absorbed 80% damage, and it would keep absorbing 80% damage even at level 40, then whats the point of trying to get a new set: except for stat upgrades you would be just as survivable.

This seems to be degenerating rather quickly.
The topic itself is a result of taking a single piece out of a puzzle and trying to figure out why it doesn't make sense on its own. There are clearly other factors at work then this simple equation by itself and without knowing them then this can't really go anywhere productive.
I'm going to close this for now and if we get more useful information and then formula still doesn't make sense then, then we can start another topic on it.
