View Full Version : Magus Appearance
(For reference: Female (http://www.warhammeronline.com/newsletter/images/2006/chaoscareer_ma_01.jpg) & Male (http://www.warhammeronline.com/newsletter/images/2006/chaoscareer_ma_02.jpg))
I was hoping to have the DPS caster for Chaos be my main, but had my reservations about what it'd end up as -- thought it might go the way of the shaman, and be partial support. Seeing the artwork, and hearing Paul's description, though, has me sold.
That said. I realise these are just early pieces of concept art, but doesn't the Tier 3 female Magus look a lot.. I don't know, better? The concept art for the Bright Mage, and the in-game model (from Paul's video blog) seemed to be nearly 1:1 in appearance. Which is great (as it looks bloody fantastic). But also has me thinking the Tier 4 Magus will look just like the image, too. While overall I love the look, two things seem off, to me.
A.) Proportion. He seems short, and stocky. Mainly his torso, it seems too wide for the rest of him. Compare his proportions to the female's, which all fit together perfectly.
B.) The armour itself. The Tier 3 female Magus has armour that all ties in together great. The metal sections are slightly more ornately done than the cloth, but not too much so. This is the biggest thing that turns me off, for the male, though. The cloth portions are very plain in contrast with the metal, which is very ornate. This could be intentional, to draw more attention to the intricate designs on the metal, but it really doesn't look that good, IMHO. Colour might also play into the contrast, with the white cloth being much more divided from the metal armour on the male than the darker blue on the female.
Overall, I think if the male's torso was thinned a bit (not a lot, I understand he needs to look bigger than the Bright Mage, he's wearing plate armour), and either the cloth he's wearing was more intricate, or the armour less so, he'd look a heck of a lot better. Or even, if the cloth was darker in colour to better match the armour.
Am I alone in this? Or do others agree that the female's tier 3 armour looks a heck of a lot more "together"? Thoughts and insight would be appreciated.

It might just be the difference between tier 3 and tier 4. Maybe tier 4 female will also be overembellished while the tier 3 male will be scrawny.

What? My whole point with the post is that the tier 3 armour looks more together, and complete. So the difference between a higher tier set of armour and a lower one is that the lower one will look better?
I understand the armour is to get more intricate as a player progresses. Only half of the Tier 4 Magus' armour is intricate. And I think that looks off (especially in comparison to the Tier 3).

Do we have any idea on how the other tiers of the Magi will look like? Let us not focus on the top tier too much, the players will have to look different before they reach the top levels.

Yes, we can see a Tier 3 Magus. She looks quite good.

Any ideas on how a level 1 Magus will look like?

Remember it's mere concept art. Yes, yes, I know that concept art is the basis for design but generally the proportions are misconstrued. Mythic's design team has done an excellent job at staying true to form with the GW models. That said, I think one reason why things look disproportionate is the male Magus is sprawled out. If they stay true to form he will be hunched over a bit. That's just my opinion but mostly likely we'll have to wait and see the in-game model rendition.

Well it's all a matter of opinion I like the tier 4 magus over the tier 3 female. It just looks better to me.

My advice is to wait until you see actual screenshots before you make a call on this. Concept art will resemble the actual armor only to a degree. After seeing screenshots you may hate the way both female and male look, or you may love it all the more.
Its too early to tell to get wrapped up in details. Details are not even complete. Wait and see imo.

I agree. You never reeally know who the character will look until you see it in a screen shot or something becasue these are just concepts and can get changed around alot before it actually gets into the game.

Plus these are just concept art just to give you an idea of what to expect. I'm sure we will see some crazy stuff. :D

Aye, and also remember these are without the trophies, extra equipment, random shiny stuff and whatever other customization options you can have. It is just the basic concept, with no gubbinz stuck on.

They should even look different in the top levels ;)
I hope so

Exactly. This is chaos. I don't want to look like everyone else at the top. I want to look chaotic. O.o

I don't really know. They look quite boring to me. Nothing chaotic at all. Hell, even Edward Scissorhands looks more chaotic. I guess it's just me, but I find Maguses, Bright Wizards and Runepriests extremely boring. Just another bunch of casters, this time with some Warhammer fluff behind them.

The female magus is really nice and natural:D. It should be kept.
Yet you are right, the male magus really looks a bit like you depicted him. I mean it's because of the armor really might have been made too wide and because it somehow doesn't fit to the the male body scheme, which normally is chiseled and becomes wider in the upper part (a), NOT like example b. (The difference in the size of a and b is not important, it's about the shape.)
It could be the case that the male magus' torso looks like a and is just concealed under the armor, which is mainly shaped like b, yet
the armor indeed looks a bit too big for him in the width and makes him look like a barrel a bit, concerning the middle part under the shoulders.
The shoulder-plates are good.

For those who don't see the difference from (a) to (c) in the paintings, I'll attempt to roughly show a female scheme in comparison (smooth curves etc. ):

As for the boredom, the game is set to have a teen rating, so I myself am also a bit unsatisfied about the magus looking relatively non-mutated and normal.
By the way these magi don't really look warped and a bit humble for chaos too (,except for the beak and the skin :p).

I'll just post some more images i've found:

The chosen one could be a bit more interesting :).

Yet it would be better if tzeentch had provided his adherents with more color diversty...

True . . . about the color thing. Always a fan of the old black and purpel with gold trim myself. :)
