View Full Version : Pet classes and YOU!

During my time playing MMOs I have usually shy'd away from pet classes. In EQ I didn't play a necro, in WoW no hunter or warlock, etc etc.
I do this because they are a highly replaced role as DPS. DPS roles are always multiple, and finding a group as a DPSer sucks.
When WAR announced the squig herder, though, I had a change of heart. I am highly, highly, highly, excited about the upcoming abilities they are talking about, and I plan on partaking in this squigfest.
In most MMOs a pet class relies on always having a pet summoned. This is mostly because their other abilities take mana, and the pet itself consumes too much mana to recast during a fight. Another kind of pet class I experienced was in DAoC. The DAoC pet class shot out little mudmen (if I remember correctly). I had a lot of trouble seeing this class as fun, but I saw the function as a buff/pet class.
Here's my question. If the squig herder "summons" multiple squigs, and becomes a "ranged dps" support, will the herder be open to attack by other players/npcs when moving from grind spot to grind spot? I am worried that playing a Squig herder will entail running around throwing meat at a group of NPCs and hpping that no one ganks him/her while in the midst of it.

De squig'z iz what I's gotz. De big'un squigs'z wid de big teefs and de chomp-a-womp!! Dey alwayz chomp-a-wompz dem stunties good!!
Personally I love pet classes. I'll have a squig herder, but it may only be an alt or something...Some of the other careers are looking a lot more interesting to me. I suppose only the caster pet classes appeal to me the most.
Anyway, the worry of getting ganked is about equal for anyone, especially when fighting some mobs. I know the squigs are pretty much "let loose", but if there's a way to control them and pull them back (if you're a ranged squig herder anyway...people seem to be forgetting there will be melee squig herders [WHICH I WILL BE ONE OF! WOOT!]) then that'd be your only shot at that.
It'll be fun to run in with my squigs, and pick targets accordingly. Little goblin surrounded by little squigs.

in WoW, hunters and locks were formidable even without the pets. i would think it'll be different for a squig herder, but i'm not to worried about that. as someone said you can melee... i think i saw an interview where it was explained that this involves riding around actually on the squig. If so that would be a great solution to the risk of being a sitting duck to surpise attackers, cos you'd be safe amonst nice wall of sharp teeth...
Haha I totally forgot about that. The climbing inside the squig part... Greenskins are gonna rock some face. Engineers are gonna be some good stuff, too, though. Giving bombs and such to allies...
I know it's kind of hard, but I just want to point out I've noticed a lot of people saying SQUID and not squiG. It ends in a g and not a d. Your fingers think otherwise, I know. Took a little bit to get over it (considering I'm not an old school warhammer fan. Although, I'm turning into a newer warhammer fan).

actually there were quite many pet classes in daoc. The one you mentioned is the Theurgist, that was a nuking class, that was often used as a interupting class, by sending lots of those small pets on key casting classes on the enemy side.
Other pet classes included:
Animist (summons Shrooms that cant move but have ranged attack) Nuking class aswell
Druid (small pet that only serves as interuption)
Enchanter/Cabalist/Spiritmaster (all summon pets that can with the right ability become REALLY hard hitting) All 3 classes are primarly nukers and debuffers
Necromancer (acts through his pet, the necro himself is a invulnarable shade standing behind the pet, channeling spells through the pet), nuking/tanking class, mainly used in pve
Hunters (small pet, much like the Enchanters/cabalist/spiritmaster pets in strength, though rarely buffed, so it ends up weaker) Stealth Archer/2h spear class.

you really had this problem ? speaking as someone who played support in one form or another I had the exact opposite problem. Most of my groups I joined we had longer drawn out fights and were wishing we could add raw damage. Many times we would cry to the guild that we needed someone who could do damage.

Right; although the DAOC pet classes didn't allow you to wear the pet, except for the Necro.
You forgot a few pet classes; minstrel, sorceror, bonedancer.
Anyway, Paul, in an interview (at E3, or some other game convention), said that the squig herder climbs inside and grabs on intestines to steer his squig....disgusting, and very greenskin.

There were some pet classes in DAoC that were really strong, and MBJ said he was fond of pet classes. I dont think Squiggies will be weak. But they are going to have some of the detractions any pet class has, with power dvided between them. Lose a pet, lose a portion of your power.
I think with the Squiggie though, it's something where you can opt to make your pet stronger or weaker in lieu of something else.

As everyone thats familiar to the tabletop game squigs can cause a lot of damage, not just to the enemy... Sooo i was wondering if I have to worry about getting my behind bitten off

Squig Herders seem like a very fun career to play as, and this is PvP based game. Raaargh
