I had trouble making anything. I had all of the ingredients but for some reason it would not allow me to use any magic essences at all. I tried using several different kinds but still no luck.

You need the Pick magic essence, the one you get by combining 5 dark blue magic essences. The dark blue ones come from combining 10 green/aqua essences like the vendor sells. All together you need to buy 50 from the vendor. Good thing they are only 1 copper.
