if you think you need one with out the other than guess again cause you don't. I found the whole growing a plant, waiting the 50 or so odd seconds for it to grow a complete hassel. I decided to pick up scavaging instead.
By level 20 I had the 30g I needed for my mount and was plesantly suprised to find out they lowered it to 15g!! Scavaging is a great way to make money and being able to make your own potions rocks for both pve and pvp. I made it to 110 in apothcary and 131ish in scavaging by lvl 20 and with more farming I could have easly made it to 130 on either one by farming more.
The nice thing is towards lvl 17ish you start to get the good waters like fizzing and distilled. So if you plan on going apothcary just know that having to grow the crap is not a requirement.
Enjoy

i was curious about this as well, i remember someone saying they work the best together, i still dont know whether to go cultiv or scav, on the one hand Cult is like you said annoying at times but scavenging is a bit boring also

Where did you get your higher level main ingredients from though? I know undead drop things for spirit resistance potions, but of all the humanoid mobs I've found, the vast majority have only dropped either water for apothecary, water for cultivating, curios, etc.
Butchering on the other hand provides a cache of main ingredients, a few secondaries and nutrients for cultivating.

In my experience, cultivation and butchering are more helpful for providing main ingredients, where scavenging is helpful at providing stabilizing/secondary components. So I suppose which is better for you depends on if you want a wide variety of potions, or simply a whole ton of stable potions of only a couple types.

Someone suggested in a different thread that higher level scavenging might give you vials.. I was just wondering if you had managed to scavenge any vials?
I made it to 101 scavenging, couldn't find any..

Many humanoids drop leeches which are a main ingredient for health pots. Given the nature of the game I happy to stick with leeches and water as a scavenger.

I think people are putting to much effort into low level Cultivation. You don't need the nutrients, water, etc to get it to grow or get the skill point. I just drop the seed and go about my exp'n. Apothecary takes more time than Cultivation imo.

Yeah, this was my experience. I went Apoth/Scav on my WH, Cultivator on an archmage I was tooling around with. I mainly went scav on my WH because I could kill fast enough to scavenge and maintain a kill spree (tough, but doable).
I didn't even touch water/fertilizer until skill 25, and I was still getting herbs and the occasional seed back. I just leave the window open to the side while blasting stuff. Arch is sedate enough that having the window open doesn't really cause a bother, and you can water/fertilise mid combat.. =)
Having a cultivator is handy for the gold weed as well.

Given the fact that each added soil/water/nutrient halves the timer... why wouldn't you use them? Unless you really just want to put in a seed and forget about it till harvest time

There are two reasons. One, you have to add each ingredient in during the appropriate phase, meaning you have to pay attention. Two, they cost money.

By the way, you don't have to leave the window open. You can exit the window and go on with your business and just check it when you see it in your log, or whenever. Also, if you die go into pvp etc it is still growing =)

True or False- Cultivation will be the only way to get certain "rare" seeds that make "rare" potions.

True, but there are also ingredients only available from scavenging and butchering.

I think until we have a better idea of what all the different recipe possibilities are, and which secondary benefits the types of potions you want to make it's really a Toss up of personal preferance supply/demand
Can you get dye ingridients from Scavenging / Butchering? Afaik no.
I found the whole growing a plant, waiting the 50 or so odd seconds for it to grow a complete hassel. I decided to pick up scavaging instead.
Instead, you picked a profession where you have to stop after every fight for a few additional seconds (when you're not being beat on) to rifle through a corpse's pockets for materials.
I decided to avoid Scavenging this time around because I have a mod that handles showing me my cultivating plots while I'm in combat, and running around performing errands, and the only other time investment is to pick up some reagents (that are optional so far) to grow the seeds with, while I'm already at a vendor ditching trash.
It takes some additional attention, but I find it far easier for me. I had Scavenging during CB and I found that I would, at least 10% of the time, run away from a pile of bodies... then have to turn and run back because I forgot to loot them twice.
