I was looking at the page on the below link

http://www.buffed.de/portal/features/mmog-specials/zu-besuch-bei-ea-mythic/die-buffed-redaktion-in-washington-teil-3/das-chaos-startgebiet.html

And saw this screen shot

Anyone have a clue what this portal looking thing might be or is?

My thoughts exactly.

Does the starting zone feature a massive portal which we arrive through?

To me, it looks far too epic to be something on that scale. And looking at the mutated landscape, it can't be Norsca...

... Could it be the Northern Polar Gate?

EDIT: Another thought is the entrance to the Inevitable City.

Its a Chaos Portal?

I do believe its the Chaos starting zone, name of the zone: no clue.
and well, we just arrived there and we are going to kick some empire butts I guess. Simple as that I suppose..

It's from the Chaos starting zone in Norsca. I'd bet we arrive through the gate from chaos wastes.

This is the great Chaos portal in Norsca, when you look at the Norsca map (http://www.warhammeronline.com/english/gameInfo/zoneOverviews/Norsca/images/Norscamap.jpg)
you see under the Name (Norsca) the portal.

It is the first portal, where every chaos player comes into W.A.R. (my guess).

Oh, btw, Paul also said, that Chaos will use portals like this for fast travel... :D

Ah, good thinking! I was looking at the map recently but it didnt dawn on me to be that.

And for the fast travel thats an awsome idea.

That's been mentioned a couple of times by the devs. Chaos will use the portals in the same way that Dwarfs use trains and Greenskins use catapults.

Aye, my guess is that it is either a form of transport, like the orc-a-pults and gyrocopters... or it is where you start as a chaos newbie. :)

Either that or some instance type thing.

Whatever it is, it looks awesome.

The Polar Chaos Gates aren't really physical things. They are holes in the fabric of reality, so there's no structure to them. The structure that used to contain them fell apart (the Old One's Gates) and destabilized the holes, letting the raw stuff of Chaos spill into the World.

But yeah, as others mentioned, the pictured Gate is some sort of Portal in Norsca.
There are other pictures of it, one with a Magus standing in front of it with some of the town visible around it.

Correct...

Chaos doesn't have a "Starting village/town" as most races/armies do in traditional MMOs... As Chaos you will start your 'life' in the game so to speak by stepping out of said portal near an Empire village ready to kick some tail.

I had a feeling that was going to be the starting area when I first seen it. I can already feel the Chaos overtaking me, just from looking at that portal! ^^ As always this game just looks better and better with every bit of detail released. I envy the testers  Hehehe

I'm sure it was said on some other website that when you arrive in said Empire Village after spilling forth from the portal, you are told that there is a mad wizard hurling firebolts at the army. Ofcourse these are just a nuisance and so would not waste elite soliders to deal with him, but you have been tasked with doing it. Therefore you have to go into this Empire Village and hack them to peices (I so hope there are women and children), then load there body parts into a Hellcannon (Demon possesing a cannon created by Chaos Dwarfs), and fire them at the Wizard.

Now if thats not the coolest starting quest ever, someone slap me and call me a dwarf.

In the Dwarf one I bet you get to load Gobos into a cannon and fire them at an unsuspecting orc village.

Dwarf: "Oi lads! FAiiI-ARE!!!"

Tied up goblin as it's fired out of cannon: "WeeeeeeeeeeeiiiIIII!!!!!" *mad cackling ensues until inevitable SPLAT against the chest plate of a Black Orc that sneers and looks like a bug just splattered all over its windshield*

O.o

Personally, I'll be on my Disc trying to figure out whether I should laugh or help the greenskins since "technically" we're sort of allied with them. <.<

I can guarantee there will be no children to kill. I am not sure if it is a S&P, FCC, or what but I have yet to see a game where the player can actually kill/harm human children. If there are some then it is going to be at least a M rated game, which Mythic wants to avoid.

Child murder is simply a line that games (or movies for that matter) very, very rearly cross.

Not to mention help to keep the kiddies out.

They have already said repeatedly that they do not want an M rating and are aiming for T. This way the game will be sold in the bigger stores, like Walmart, who will not sell M rated games.

Mythic wanting to avoid an M rating is a major reason for why Slannish is not a playable Chaso faction.

Funny though, parents would rather have their kids killing someone, or see someone kill another person on TV rather than let them see a nude women.

From what I understand that is mostly in the US. The rest of the world seems to be the opposite. Sex is okay but, not violence.

I know Germany has some pretty strict censor laws with violence. If you ever played the DM of Half-Life there is a robot character model you can be. That model was used to replace the marines in the SP part of the game, to obey the law.

Robots are fine but, not people.

WAR will have a T-rating. end of story.

why this is doesn't matter. why there are even ratings in games does not matter.

I have yet to see a game where the player can actually kill/harm human children.

The Fallout series - Killing children lands you the Childkiller trait and marks you as a generally unpopular person. They are removed from all EU versions.

Baldur's Gate 2 - Some kids show up in one of the villages you can visit. Hurling a fireball into their little group for bothering you nets just as much reputation loss as doing the same thing in any populated area. I'm fairly certain they're in all versions, as they are the source of a quest or two.

Those are the only 2 games I can think of off the top of my head. They're both RPG's too, funny that.

I know, sorry about locking your Noob thread.

Unfortunatley someone always has to take it overboard and ruin it for everyone, and in that case it was everyone! :o Seriously though, I'm really not in the business of censorship or editing peoples posts. So when things go over the line I have no choice but to shut it down :(

I love a good read and to laugh as much as anyone, but just the same I'm a tool to the rules. I interpret them generously for you guys, to a point, and then out comes the thumb screws. It's the way it has to be. :-P

Only in the north/south american parts of the world, i've played some games from europe and oooh boy is sex FAR more accepted. It's just that they have the same reactions towards violence that we do to sex...kinda weird actually.

oh ya, and there is a secret(as in unwritten) code about harming woman and children back when well...comic books came out this code was followed to the point where it was imbedded in movies/shows and games. We seem to be getting more and more lax about it, but thats only for M rated games and even then I don't like harming children so I don't play games involving that. woman on the other hand...well if they fought back and weren't mothers maybe.

Spoonie
03-08-2007, 06:38 AM
Yeah, I was fairly recently in some european countries, and you can pretty much be watching the news, then have two naked chicks making out and it's an orange juice commercial. No, I'm not making that up. Or that other commercial with the guy and chick in the butter commercial, well you get the idea... Yeah I'm not making that one up either. However, in germany it is, in fact illegal to put *any* blood in video games from what I understand. The german version of 'Dawn of War' replaced all death animations with little star poofs like some mario brothers game. Very bizarre.

Yeah sex and nudity is less taboo here. Go to any Danish beach in the summer and most of the girls and women (of all ages, 0-99+) are topless. That's just the norm. Only on the beaches though. You don't see that in the streets.

I don't think Denmark is as anti-violence as some other european countries, but I do think sex/nudity is more accepted than violence. Personally I think that attitude is much more healthy than the other way around, because sex is life affirming, fun and a bunch of other positive things, where as violence is mostly negative.

Violence is pretty much inherent in Warhammer, but at least it has a funny twist to it, which, for me, is what makes it acceptable. If it was just all serious and glorifying violence, I doubt I'd even look at it twice.

I know I might be a bit odd , but do you really want to kill children in a mmo game?

I know it adds to the "evil" thing but it sounds slightly retarded to me. " LOL guess what guis i'm gonna go play warhammer whar I can kill kids".

That sort of thing seems a bit lame and should be kept to horrific stories about the warhammer world , rather than what a player can do himself.

I honestly expect that if you could kill children it be more of a stupid gimmick where it's trying to promote pointless violence to seem more "hardcore" and not add anything to the game atall.

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another which states that this has already happened.
This theory disproves itself.

Anyone else suddenly hear that old sound effect from the game Chaos Gate when you looked at the portal or is it just me? O.o o.O

Anyway, I personaly would of much rather seen the game with a M rateing, but I can understand the reasons why EA Mythic chose to shoot for T. (Yes, EA Mythic, cause as I understand it, before EA got thrown into the mix they werent going for any spacific rateing)
You can read as much into how graphic Warhammer is as you want. If you want to look at is from a totaly clean view, it's just a game with toy soldiers. A deeper view would see the raw, brutal, and unabashed violence behind the game. I think EA Mythic is shooting for something that's not quick and clean, but not way over the line, a view that keeps the game from becomeing an emotional shockfest, but still gives you a difinitive image that this is war, this is bloody, this is not a nice place to live.

On the topic of women and children. Well, with women, they've been yelling for equal rights well over a century, why should they get special treatment in this department? But with children, that is something I can see people viewing as too disturbing. If you wanted the game to show the horrors of war in the most realistic way, yeah, that would fly. But I can see that game getting blacklisted in a heartbeat with how knee-jerk alot of people are these days. It's just one of the unspoken things. We know it happens in the world, but no one realy wants to talk about it (except us, obviously).

As for sex, er, yeah, Teen rateing -_-...... We can all wait for the client-side patches to come out. We know they happen with every game that comes out. Let's just hope EA Mythic doesnt decide to be anal about them, claiming people want to cheat when all they want to see is boobs.

Err, maybe they want to make the game as appealling as possible to the most demographics? It's not as if there isn't any blood 'n' guts around the place anyway, judging by screenshots and some videos. Looking at what they've done and what the rating they're going for seems to be clear that they can make it rather violent without being gratuitious as well.

And the US and Australian censorship authorities have massive problems with sex being portrayed in games, so it's doubtful that a MMO (which is obviously trying to get the most demographics available since they largely depend upon subscription) will sorta 'shoot itself in the foot' as it were.

I think you will see more adult oriented MMOs in the future. They will probably start off somewhat crappy (I think there are some out now), but before long there will be enough to make people happy. ;)
