Why are the character transfers on select servers only?

From a business standpoint, the main reason against having character transfers is that if you do this then it looks like your game is dying.

By offering only select transfers from select servers, this only reinforces the message that these servers are "dying". If you are going to do select servers, you need to merge them and not give people the option, or just close the server and force people to pick another. Otherwise you are paying out money for hardware, bandwith, and support, to run servers with tiny tiny populations (after all, who is going to stay on a low pop server when everyone else transfers off, 10-20% of the player base?). If you have customers who like a tiny tiny populations then its much better to do the offer below.

The other thing to do is to make transfers available to people, once a month, from all realms to all other realms, and charge people a flat fee for it. People who want to move to a more populated server can, and vice versa. And the message it sends is not that the game is dying but is instead that the game is expanding. I realize that there is an argument against going from a non-open RVR server to ORVR and vice versa, but really, what is the difference? And if the difference is so big, then just dont allow that portion of it, but I think it will encourage people to try ORVR if they know they can switch back in a month if they hate it.

Just my 2 cents. Either don't offer transfers, or handle them in a much better manner then just having a funeral for 3 dead servers.

Re: Why are the character transfers on select servers only?

Hey guys,

We're happy to be providing more transfers, with that in mind I'll look to answer some of your concerns.

Firstly, we need to be considerate of the destination servers we choose for a number of reasons. When we first allowed transfers one of the larger issues we ran into was having too few or too many destinations.

What this generally did was not provide an even enough split which caused problems on those destination servers that didn't receive enough transfers.

We also want to open up transfers to servers where it's mutually beneficial for all players, if we allowed transfers to say, Dark Crag, it's very likely a majority of players would seek to migrate there. This would cause some mid-high range servers to not benefit from the stimulus players but would also create (even bigger!) queues on Dark Crag.

Conversly though we should see some of those that decided to restart on Dark Crag return to their original characters and this should bring DC down to more accomodating levels for its players. It's Win/Win!

We'll continue to monitor the health and populations of the servers and take any needed steps to keep things health and fun for everyone.

Thanks guys

Re: Why are the character transfers on select servers only?

We want to avoid inconveniencing players further by seperating them from their guilds and friends simply because they went on vacation or had finals and weren't able to transfer before their destination server was closed.

Is there a perfect way to do it? Not really, but we're happy to provide the service. Thanks!

Dylio,

Unfortunately you'll have to decide what you want to do, as I said we try to minimize inconvenience but we can't do it all.

I'd suggest seeing if there's a reason your guild wouldn't move to a different server but I understand each situation is different.

Good luck!

I'm going to lock this thread now and point discussion at another transfer thread though, more discussion to be had here:

Thanks all
