I think theyd have about 200,000 left until the gold farmers left too

What you describe as quality in World of Warcraft is just a result of the company that was creating it. Blizzard has resources, money and time. They could polish the game until it was good. Gameplay, however, cannot be fixed with money and time only planning. WoW is quality, don't get me wrong. But if you think WAR won't be just because its not WoW you are the one kidding yourself. Without EA I'd say you're right. But now with extra financial support from THE video game publisher I think we can say they will have time to release a quality product. Not only that but Mythic has everything going for them. Experience (DAoC), hindsight (seeing what worked in this genre, WoW), and a GREAT IP to base it on.

Also, everyone, I agree with an earlier post this thread should of been called "Warhammer is MY Holy Grail of MMOs."

You said yourself a few posts up it's the same as WoW with a different theme. I think you just contradicted yourself. As long as the RvR is good and there is a meaning to it I'm a fairly happy camper.

Well..you're really not. If that's the case you can just thank UO for all the MMO today seeing as it's all the same re-hashed into different themes (which it kind of has become as of late) but the grandfathers of MMO UO, EQ, AC were all fairly different..UO obviously being the biggest difference.

None of the above really mean much. The number of MMOs released in the last 6-8 years prove that.

Mythic and Blizzard had no experience when they released DAOC and WoW respectively and yet didn't do too badly.

Conversely the same cannot be said of many products made by more 'experienced' companies.

LOTR and SWG had great IPs - one succeeded , albeit unspectacularly, the other one started with great promise before tanking.

Hindsight didn't help Tabula Rasa or Vanguards or a half dozen no-name MMOs that are best forgotten succeed.

And for that matter in terms of (potential) finacial backing Sony isn't exactly small and yet few of their offerings really shine.

Not saying that Warhammer couldn't be THE holy grail of MMOs but I'll reserve judgement till I play the final product.

exactly what I'm doing =) I hope people dont take me as being offiensive, but in these posts i try to play devils advocate for the purpose of making some see that this game, no matter how good it is, will NEVER be as good as people hope.

Realism may not be showing faith in a gam, but it doesnt leave you half as dissapointed as being optimistic.

Why does everyone around here say "gorilla in the room?" I thought the idiom was traditionally "elephant in the room."

The desire for mass appeal combined with the expensive investment risk, means that the best MMORPG ideas are a long ways off in the future. Most publishers and investors, regardless of what the designers may intend, want a safe and secure investment. To me, WAR is nothing but "WoW done right!". I have no problem with that. At the time, that may be all that's needed to be considered the "Holy Grail of MMOs". If I felt that WAR represented the culmination of all the best MMORPG ideas, I'd probably never play another one. Somebody with guts, vision and money needs to come along and smash the mold though, not just reinvent it or innovate on it... just completely smash it.

Folks,

We're not, we won't be and there is no such thing as a holy grail of MMOs.

What I want us to be is a great game, a fun game and a game that can grow and get better over the years and stands a reasonable test of time. If we can do that, I'll be satisfied. And besides, the last thing I want to do is sit in a room playing WAR for all eternity until some explorer finds me and I die in a landslide.

Holy grail of PVP-centric MMOs is fine.

It's possible WAR could influence the MMO market, but I'll be happy with a good, fun game that doesn't cater to a single playstyle.

Of course, that concept alone might be something that could have great influence on the market.

If you can get RvR/PvP (it's the same crap in reality) I'm entertained for a while. I don't enjoy leveling the slightest and I'm not really sure how anyone can make it exciting. We'll see..

I won't be suprised to see alot of WoW players come over though because it looks vastly familiar, especially at first glance and I'm sure the mechanics are roughly the same.
