Dev Diary - John Cox (Combating Hackers)

From the From the Dev Team category we have: Dev Diary - John Cox (Combating Hackers)
Well the topic of this developer diary is a naughty word—the H word—H****** - er… hacking. It’s something we at Mythic don’t often talkabout openly, but we do take very seriously. It’s a very interestingsubject that I’d love to talk in-depth about; it has many challengesand curiosities that make for an interesting discussion. I get a senseof joy when I know we’ve ruined a hacker’s day. Unfortunately,“fighting the good fight” is very cloak-and-daggers stuff, going backand forth, with the hackers and cheaters—so, to talk about it in greatdetail also gives information to the very people we’re attempting tothwart. Here’s my best shot at showing you a glimpse behind thecurtain about how we handle hacking and cheaters without giving awaytoo many of our secrets!

So... they go about it the hard way by trying to detect the cheaters instead of finding the cheat programs online, finding out what they do and fix the problem.

So Mythic, do you always go about things the hard way?

Also, fix your spaghetti code. We know you have had horrible programmers, the evidence is releasing patches that return old bugs. These are what allow the cheats to happen.

Get it done so I dont have to hear another discussion about cheating vs over powered.

Bad trolling is....bad (and obvious)

From the Herald:

Quote:
The first thing we do is get involved covertly. Believe it or not, any of you hackers out there, we’re members of your online communities, sometimes silently listening, sometimes actively participating. The best place to figure out what hackers are trying and what they’ve figured out about us is to hide among them. In some cases we go so far as to get the hacks and use them internally in a controlled space in order to develop responses to them.

This is good. I no longer play Warhammer, but reading articles like this reminds me that the Mythic Team is great- just struggling with the product.

More press like this and I may very well return soon.

Huzzah Mythic!

If you didn't read the dev post, then you should have before you made your comment.

What we post is not a synopsis but an excerpt - it encourages you to go to the original source and, well, read that.

Read the article in the future before you make a comment, and you won't be mistaken for a troll. It's not that difficult.

I can't say that GOA/Mythic does not ban cheaters. I have reported some of the obvious ones and never seen them ever again. Other thing is that I don't really see many cheaters in Europe. Does US have it that bad?

That article is a joke and will only work on people that have no clue about the technical aspect(s) and have not yet lost faith in the devs.

Hard to believe such people still existed.

Hard to believe that people who post on forums for a game they've quit still existed.

Move on, there's better things to do.

Pfft. The best hacker communities are always the same. Entry is 100% restricted to positive development. Positive development = I built something that makes the hacks work better, or made a hack of my own.

I can tell you some of the best hacks out there have been around for over 6 months. So how should I read this article? Certainly it won't put the fear in any hacker. In fact, most hackers would consider something like this a challenge to rise to. They (Mythic) are certainly NOT part of the best communities out there. Yes, that's the one you won't find with a google search. Unless they're hacking their own game effectively and continously.

"The best place to figure out what hackers are trying and what they’ve figured out about us is to hide among them." = pure scare tactics. Any decent hacker signed on to the "I don't give a " contract a long time ago. Any decent hacker expects to get banned.

No, this is pure marketing. This is the pre-emptive response to the "what are you doing against hacking?" thread that appears every now and again on every forum.

Hackers aren't one step ahead of Mythic, but ten.
