Warhammer Alliance's NYCC Write-up: Day 2--Tournament
Ok, so today's write up will be no where near as long or thrilling as yesterday's. Sorry guys, Jeff and Paul were not there, Adam was like a ghost--there one minute, gone the next. It was essentially me and, well, a lot of amazing PvP'ers.
The tournament today was scheduled for noon, but didn't really kick off until 1:15-1:30. Teams were divided into two groups of nine for the best two out of three scenarios. This would be done twice, and the scenarios would change. Interestingly enough, it seemed more people wanted to play Order than Destruction--lots of Order love today! Players got blank, Rank 40 templates with about 30 gold so they could buy mounts, potions, or whatever else they needed. They also chose their specs and tactics. The UI was allowed to be customized to a certain extent--no third party applications were allowed. Round One: The first Scenario was Nordenwatch (yes, at Rank 40, with mounts!). The players seemed to enjoy returning to the Tier 1 Scenario, but even with their RP stuck in a rock through the match, Order pulled ahead and won 500-255. The second Scenario was Doomfist Crater. This match was nearly a shut-out, and Order again won handily, 500-10. I will admit though, that a Destruction player did get disconnected during this match. Jess admitted that it took them about an hour to get all the computers logged in this morning. It was inevitably overloaded. The Order team had owon the first round, but had a structural advantage of having three healers vs. Destruction's DPS make-up. After some shuffling around, a few people from the Order team came over to Destruction to play as healers. New players came in to fill remaining team slots. Round Two: The first Scenario was Logrin's Forge. Although one of the Destruction players had never battled in this Scenario, you would never know it. It seems the switch of players had turned the tide, and Destruction won 500-80. The second Scenario was Nordenwatch again. This battle seemed a little closer, with a lot of flag turning. Ultimately, Destruction won again, 500-220. While not necessarily a true tournament, because there were no teams really "eliminated," it was great to see a live PvP set-up, how players use their hotkeys, and how they set up their interfaces. It seemed like a generally happy, "everyone wins," type setting--but as they finished, they made sure they exchanged player names, just in case they ever met on the battlefield again. sounds like fun - i always wondered what it would be like to go back to the tier 1/2 scenarios as a 40.

Three switched from Order to Destruction that I know of, and one switched from Destruction to Order.
I made sure to try to ask everyone if they mind their picture being up here--little difficult to find everyone in that crowded exhibit. You guys did great in the first round, congratulations. Last edited by Ariwyn-WHA; 02-09-2009 at 12:50 PM.. |

I wish there was video of the scenario it would have been nice to see them in action. I really want to see them rip it up at Nordenwatch with mounts lol

The tournament was far from what I expected
Didn't know those 4 Asian guys were from RvR. They are actually from my server (Volkmar). I watched them play. They had good coordination and skills although one of them, playing the RP got stuck in Nordenwatch for most of that round I am not going to comment on the whole "some Order switching to Destro", and "Destro staying to play another round" thing.. However, I did get to chat with Adam and Andy and that was worth much more. So decent experience overall.

I hope Adam and Paul actually watched the Tourney very closely. It should have been a great chance for them to see how real players go about PvP in Warhammer and not how they expect things to be played.
I did overhear that they do play on some real servers and play with the community, but over all, I still wish they spent more time actually watching players play and took notes. Maybe then they could reform some ideas they have about balance and game expectations. |

Ariwyn, You forgot to mention that our RP was stuck in a rock by the fortress flag in Nordenwatch from the beginning of the match to the end.

Also, I know Andy and Jess play, and Jess told me on Saturday that everyone plays. I saw Adam for a little while, but he was putting together some of the poster boxes. I didn't really see him around after that. EDIT: Which Nordenwatch was your RP stuck in? Round 1 or 2? |
