Spotlight on: Guides - Building a WAR PC

With Patch 1.2 on the PTS and the imminent arrival of the Choppa and Slayer, we can expect to see new players and a lot of players returning to see how WAR has evolved and improved. One of the fundamental factors in enjoying WAR, or any game, is making sure your system can effectively run the game.

Today's Spotlight is focused on a couple helpful threads when you're building a system to play WAR, or just looking to make a couple improvements to your old box to squeeze more mileage out of the old clunker.

Read More Here.

I really appreciate guides like that, keeps tech support areas generally clutter-free.

However, the engine is so bad that you can't really make a computer consistently good at playing the game :\

Sorry but i must agree here this thread seems pointless until Mythic fixes there code. Case in point i run a E8400 3ghz duel core with a 9800 gtx under XP pro with 4 gigs of ram and in keeps on fastest frame rate setting i get 5-20 fps on a good day. And no its not my rig i run AOC on high at 60+ fps, oddly my wifes rig runs war better in keeps 20+ fps and she has an old AMD 2.2g with a 8800 gt and 2 gigs of ram lol.

So good luck finding the right combo that runs good in T3-T4 keeps i have not seen it yet and have had all my friends leave because of this nightmare.

Quick question then. I have been having minor issues but can not decide if it is my laptops fault or the games. I run this laptop (yes that exact one, I bought it from the reviewer) except I upped it to three gigs of ram.

I figure eventually I will ditch this for a desktop but I am still curious if it is the game or if my laptops specs are bad.

Thanks for the guide as well. It looks as though it will be very helpful for when I do start to build a desktop.

I must really disagree here, I have ran WAR on many different computers, from their low end to very top end stuff with very few hick-ups, ctd, and fairly high FPS

There is a high chance you have some things wrong with your setup that aren't up to date or you are complaining about the occasion CTD or lag-spike

but hey I guess with your l337 27 shadow warrior you play the game extensively

Eh, listen here.

I'm 4 year WoW technical support, microsoft certified, AMD enthusiast.

I'm running an ATI HD4870 graphics card. Second most powerful GPU in the world for gaming. I've run the game under XP32/64, Vista32/64, Fedora 10, Windows 7, and Windows server 2008.

My machine is many times more powerful than the system requirements.

I make the 100 FPS cap outdoors when it's quiet.
10 FPS in a large keep raid.

Per the level of my -current- character, I promise you that this is not the thread for that kind of trash. I am quite confident that I am a much better player than you are, even if I have not yet hit 40 on any of my characters. You see, one must not be 40 to enter T4 fights and decide that they want to reroll.

Please play again, have a nice day.

Sorry Natums, but i must agree with Ahti. The only thing (aside from applications taking up mor RAM than XP supports) that has ever caused my rig issues is WAR...

This is the processor i use i dont get any lag on full graphics i have to switch to fastest frame rate when theres a 2 wb battle tho but on fastest works well no lag in keep fights.

Intel Core i7 Processor 920 (2.6
4096MB (4x1024) 1067MHz DDR3 Tri Channel
1 Hard Drive : 500GB Serial ATA (7200RPM)
Graphics : 256 MB ATI Radeon HD3650

As you can see the graphics card is pretty whack but it works fine.
I had to upgrade my pc to play war i tried upgrading the graphics card and the ram but this didnt help as i guess the processor wasnt up for it.
But on that old pc i played wow and City of X with no issues so you guys could be right as the pc you play on sound fine.

I too bought a new rig, GF8800GT (640Mb) x 2 SLi, Quad core 2.4Ghz, decent Asus mobo, SATA2 hard drives, and 4Gb DDR3 ram, all the goodies needed, or so I thought. I even tuned Vista 64 Ultimate to the max, turning off everything and following every guide known to man to clean it up.

Fear 2, full bling, solo and mulitplayer, perfect. Far Cry 2 in all modes, perfect. Dawn of War, BF2142, AoC, Eve, even WoW all play really well no matter what I throw at them. Keep siege in WAR - 5-15 FPS even with all effects turned off, on a clear zone 70-80 with no issues. So we all know the problem lies in WAR itself.

IMO Giving advice on building a WAR machine is pretty poor, because no matter how much cash you throw at it, its not going to improve much during heavy scenes like keep seiges. Mythics only true response was not to fix the issue, but to bypass it by sacrificing gameplay to those few who get booted out of such events back to their warcamp. I think its poor taste to be bigging up high end machinery, which dont fare any better.

In other words, dont be fooled into thinking uber cash will make WAR run any better.

Guys, keep the personal insults out of this. If someone trolls, and you respond--you're being no better, you're just feeding it. If someone is trolling, report them by using the little (!) button on the bottom left-hand side of his/her post. If you respond, you are just as likely to receive an infraction.

You're wrong that HD4870 is the second most powerful gpu. GTX 295, HD4870 X2, HD4850 X2, and even sometimes GTX 285, GTX 260, GTX 260 216 Core can all beat it depending on the game. HD4870 x2, 4850x2, and the GTX 295 regularly will beat it in the same benchmarks. Let us not even get into whether you have the 1GB or 512mb version.

I think it needs to be said again: It's the network code that's causing the FPS drops. That, and particle effects (which are on almost all spells and cause havoc with older graphics card) makes a combo that'll kill any spec computer.

So until Mythic fixes the network code a uber computer is not going to make WAR run better than a decent one.

Oh, and the combat log is insane. Turning that off in fortress sieges gains me about 10 fps. Why Mythic, why?
